I remember I used to see this on MTV all the time, and when Steve Walsh Left and John Elefante came in - MTV had TONS of footage including them in the recording studio, because I remember Phil Ehart was playing an all Rototom kit in a large tiled bathroom and it sounded absolutely HUGE. (that was during the recording of "Drastic Measures".) But I wish all of that material was available to us just because I would love to be able to see it as an adult.
@ogrebattle22763 I loved this song as a kid in the 70's and still do. I was listening to it this morning and I was like HEY, this sounds like I could get my Saturday Night Fever on to this!
Dude, it's just music. Disco? Well, I'd rather have the Bee Gees than anything that is playing these days. So much much for disco hatred. In the end its all music, and how it is that stuff now sucks compared to stuff back then.
@jkoruty Dude if you like it then good for you knock yourself out... I didn't like this album the song is just ok & yes it has a disco bassline.... I saw Kansas at their best "The Point Of No Return Tour" after that Tour it was all down hill from there with Kansas...
Kansas is so tight...they make playing music look totally effortless...Kerry just switches to/from keyboards to/from guitar as if he's playing them both at the same time.
I was lucky to saw the in Puerto Rico on 1979 (Monolyth tour) then on 1989 also in PR In The Spirt of Things Tour, again 1998 at Hard Rock Cafe PR and again in 2005 in Arena Pier 10 in PR... Great Performances but the one I treasure the most is 1979 I was 12 years old and was my first concert...

Unfortunately, the days of bands like Kansas ruling the airwaves are long gone. I once read somewhere (maybe the booklet in the Kansas box set) that Kansas prided themselves on not being a pretty band. The irony is that some labeled bands like Kansas as corporate rock. The popular music today is corporate pop. It is all about looks, video, packaging, marketing, etc.. It is nice to see incarnations of bands like Kansas touring. But the chances of there ever being more bands like them is slim.
@Jefgg Very well put... The 70's are long gone... I'd be a liar if I said that there aren't any good bands out there as we speak for instance I am a huge Tool fan etc... but I agree in general the majority of good bands out there are few & far between... music was ruined by the likes of MTV etc... & it hasn't recovered since...
Kansas never got their true credit as one of the best prog rock bands of the 70's because there were so many others that got more airplay. They were so talented and so 'tight', almost making it look effortless on songs like this one.
Both Steve and Kerry's keyboard rigs include Yamaha CP70 acoustic/electric grand pianos, although on Kerry's side an ARP Quadra is seen. Could anyone here please spot the various synthesizers Steve and Kerry are playing?
Having lived in Kansas when this song came out was pretty cool. I grew up in Wichita and it was always pretty cool when they came back to have a concert even though they were from the Topeka area, we still loved the shows! Too bad that Kerry, Steve and Robby couldn't all get along. They are really what made Kansas. Sorry John E. But they produced a sound that was unlike anything in the music scene which was hard to do back then.
well.. was thinking while listening one more time to the song... the answer is: no, we won't get anything like this ever again.. too bad . This said.. I believe I'm gonna play that video again.. hehehe thanks for posting .. :)
at the time monolith came out the critics hammered it. i thought it was good but not their best. if i remember right, it was the last album steve walsh played on to pursue solo stuff, then rejoined the group later, for the power cd. seen them live 6 times, all with walsh, wouldnt have it any other way,, the man can sing!
I've seen this video a few times on VH1 Classic but I don't think i have seen it on MTV but then again who has seen a music video pre-2008 on MTV lately? If so, THAT was a mistake on their part!! LOL
I love the band, I love the song, I've been listening to them since before this song even came out, but those shorts dude is wearing look totally gay! lol
Was this video ever shown on MTV. I know it was a top 30 hit. It always seems like the average only seems to recall Carry on wayward Son,Dust in the Wind.
Thanks for posting all the Kansas videos. I was in high school in Topeka (KS) when this was out. Nothing better than hearing POTSW in Kansas. I know, corny. I miss the days when musical talent was respected and enjoyed. My cuz went to HS with a couple of the guys at Topeka West around '71.
@gravano2 will we ever see this again? Maybe, if we can still remember all the things that we used to do - and all the things we didn't do because we knew better than to do them! Well, it's a hard thing to face the music. So far, it's not the proper solution 'cause it's all about the same to me. Oh I wish that I could be ...
What an incredibly tight band with all the elements they have. I've been a fan since 1976. The first time I stepped on a dance floor was when Carry on My Wayward Son was played. Great song, impossible to dance to, but one of my all-time favorites. I just saw Kansas at Four Bears Casino in ND last year, they sounded great.
What you wore or how you looked really didn't matter at that time. It was all about the music back then. Now days, it's all about image and less about the music - mostly because of the invent of MTV.
While living in Manhattan, Kansas, I was in a band we were looking to upgrade our system. The bass player and myself went to a store in Topeka called Steam music, we were waited on by none other then Kerry Livgren. We had seen him in a band called "Cottonwood". Later the bands name was changed to "Kansas", this was sometime back in the early 70's. By the way, the Manhattan I refered to is Manhattan, Kansas

Great underrated hit from KS -- "Top 40" stuff summer buddy and I were earning college $ painting around CT back in 79. Liked it then, maybe even more now. Have to marvel at Steve Walsh's outfit -- definitely late 70's!Looks like he's hitting a pick up soccer game after the concert. Kerry Livgren: amazing -- handling guitar and keyboard at the same time. No wonder, after coming to Jesus, he went on to find AD, the greatest (and most criminally underappreciated) Christian rock group ever.

Kansas is the name of a native tribe that lived in and around what is now the state of Kansas.
The meaning of the word " Kansas" is explained in the song. Love it. Being born in Kansas makes the song very insiteful, and meaningful.
