depends what u r looking for, if u say intelligent and also with fighting skill and might, Zhang Liao and Zhang He, if only fighting skill, hm... maybe Dian Wei and Xu Zhu. But when come to leadership, intelligence and politic skill, Sima Yi, Jia Xu, Guo Jia, Xun Yu, these were all very good, just only Sima Yi and Jia Xu had longer life spend, and Jia Xu was a very low profile man, he would not say anything if u do not ask him, and usually he gave Cao a very good advise.
One of my favourite things about this battle is that Zhang Liao and his troop got encircled by the enemy and Zhang Liao quickly managed to break through but his troops did not and they shouted at him asking if he was going to foresake them and so Zhang Liao being as awesome as he is thought BACK into the cirlce and rescued his troop and that in my opinion is a true hero
Dont think so, Zhang Liao might had beaten 100k Wu troops with 800 of his, does not mean that he killed them all, maybe force them to retreat. To force 100k troops to retreat can have many way, like burn their supplies, cut off their supply lines, scare them away, a soldiers fighting in the battle field, the most important is the moral, if he saw everyone of his teamates is running away, what do u think he would do? Run for his life of course.
Zhang Liao is one of my favorite historical generals for his bravery and his cunning strategies. he may not be well known but he is indeed one of the best in my book.
haha he was a friggin legend, and dont worry people nowadays dont noe him, but back in his day, people feared him, he was basically the main character told in scary stories to children of Wu.
Because he was just so dammned fear by Wu all because of this battle, thats why this battle is my favourite :D

Second, Sun Quan needed to finish the battle and occupied the area and build up def before Cao could sent in reinforcement. This was why u c Sun Quan did not waste time on advancing, Zhang Liao brought only 800 men, maybe he split his troop to guard the castle, Sun Quan might has the advantage of 10 to 1. He needed to finish this fast, to make a supply line to feed 10k men is not easy.

the box wasn't accurate. Cao personally gave Zhang Liao the box when Cao left for Xudu (capital), not by messenger.
Zhang was pissed when he suddenly remembered the box.
