Ya know, I've heard all of these criticisms of Mike's playing before and I think it's totally unfair. Listen to Metheny, Scofield, and especially Frisell, they all have their bag of tricks that they draw from. That's what makes them who they are.
you guys need to check out his playing on slower tunes such as 'after you' or 'still there'. he's very dynamic on slow tunes.i think playing without keys most of the time especially on fast tunes has made his approach more of a habit to compensate for the lack of a chordal instrument behind him live. just a thought.
if he was overrated why would all those other great guys play with him?I don't think Brecker Bros,Jim Hall,Pat Martino,Miles Davis,Jerry Bergonzi or whoever else played with him would choose him as a sideman if he wasn't a really cool player...+++he writes great songs and is pretty humble ....thumbs up in my case
look, hes standing in the middle of an multi-purpose space and is playing his ass of. and outside the damn sun is shining. this isn´t the right context for this fragile kind of art. but the foo fighters had done this right. off course man. so plug in your headphones...
Mike is not very good with the application of "DYNAMICS" to his solo, he gets excited and plays perfectly and accuratly but everything is at the same level.
Agreed. Plus that unlike guys like Holdsworth there is a fairly limited number of conceptual ingredients going into his solos; it's like he has 500 great licks and is always elaborating on those..
hes a exelent guitar player not the best musican but one of the best guitarrist

I really hate the term "clinic". "Doctor, I'm shit on the guitar, please help me"

Stern's playing sounds pretty boring to me and for some reason I feel embarrassed when I hear him playing. I think he is far overrated guitarist.
