@AvatarTTfan if you havent found out about google yet, ill teach you how to use it :)
Go to google.com, write Wacom Cintiq 12wx and press Enter. now a site called Wacom.com should be amongst the sites listed there, click that, and there you go :D
the responsiveness is about the same, on my old DIY I used an Ultrapad with 256 pressure levels the genuine one has 1024! the difference is clearly visible. if you use an Intuos 3, you'll have the same of the genuine Cintiq.
the responsiveness (or lack of it) is more dued to the speed of the computer the tablet is attached to rather then the tablet.
i use my cintiq in a mac, but i didnt found out how to put one of the buttons to "drag" the image around like you do in that video.. can you tell me how to configure that?? thanks!
hmmmm doesn't that damage the pixels from pressing on the LCD screen for too long? The liquid crystals may be unevenly distributed from drawing on the screen.
Good job mate! I don't think I can pull this off. I'm worried about software side of things. Is there any need to edit drivers or anything cos that would be really difficult.
Also, is the lag due to a slow processor or is it a limitation of the tabelt itself?
The only problem I forsee with the excellent custom design, is that the physical limitations of the screen will cause it to start to deteriorate over prolonged use like this. Are you thinking of adding some kind of protective laminate or film over the lcd display to protect the screen itself? Just a though. Amazing work, keep up the awesome engineering!

i didn't try none of them, from a pixel count point of view, the 21UX is better (1920000 vs 1764000 pxls). both are based on the same Intuos 3 tablet technology.
depends on you, if you're more comfortable with a 4/3 (21UX) or 16/10 (20WSX) aspect ratio. mine has a 20.1" Wide monitor, i find myself more comfortable with a 16/10 aspect screen :-)
Hey, Tanassi, glad to see you still active in doing what you do best (draw sexy cartoons). Why don't you sell a couple of your cartoons then you can afford a genuine Cintiq? ;o)
hi Dhar, nice to hear you :-) actually i'm busy with other stuff (unfortunately not sexy girls), are you attending Animation Mentor school? how is it? are you making good progress?
to zombie: in some previous answer i explained briefly but if you go on "forum[dot]bongofish[dot]co[dot]uk" and search "tanassi's build" you'll find my Diy Cintiq build.
to jimoer: thanks for your offer but right now i'm quite busy with my job and couldn't have the time to build anotherone.
If "U' were asked... if U would be interested in making another .. say 22" or better.. What..would "U".. say.. to..taking payments on the project... for "U' see being on SSD does not leave me much leyway on buying one outright.. If I would become a famous cartoonist i would make this story board as semi real as possible with your name in the highlander lights.. There can be only One Angel with these qualities..
WOW... I sincerely applaud on this project :). Just out of interest have you ever used a real wacom cintiq? if so how does the sensitiveity and tilt ect compare?
I have used one at work, and my friend made his own cintiq...the parallax is slightly worse since the glass on the LCD is thicker on a DIY, and your sensitivity depends on starting tablet that you cannibalize for the project. The biggest change is the lack of express keys. They're VERY useful, and the loss hurts. I think you could manage to wire your monitor to still use them, though. I don't know how.
i spent €120 for the tablet (used) and €250 for the monitor plus about €50 for leds (backlighting), a new casing, power supply, tempered glass, and other stuff.
and of course some dozen of fun work hours.
total €420, not really cheap but compared with €3.000 of a genuine Cintiq... it's not bad :-)
i think that un US it's possible to find cheaper components and spend less money.
take a graphic tablet and a LCD monitor, strip them apart, overlap the inner part of the monitor over the inner part of the tablet, lock them together with duct tape, connect the cables, power on everything, et voilà... le jeux sont fait :-D
hi, can you mail me a sketch or more technical explanation on how to build one of these? I have not enough money to buy one of these expansive tablets and like to build one by myself...
How wide must be the tablet? does it must have the same size of the lcd screen or it doesn´t matter? where and how connect the cables? How much does it cost me if u build one for me? I live in spain, so you had to mail me it... I am sure that it will be far less expensive than buying one...
i strongly recommend the one i'm using in the video: ARTRAGE 2.5, a beautyful piece of software, intuitive, easy, powerful, realistic painting, for only $25!
corel X, toon boom, tvpaint, ps3, retas, anime studio pro, manga studio, there are torrents, crack and other freebies if you want to test it, if you want to use it for work pay the full price. it's worth it and u get the company going creating updates, fixes etc. BTW. There is a free soft for painting on the internet as part of GPL

are you useing a mac or windows??
i use my cintiq in a mac, but i didnt found out how to put one of the buttons to "drag" the image around like you do in that video.. can you tell me how to configure that?? thanks!
francischetto 1 year ago
@francischetto
i'm using Win XP Pro, so i don't know about Mac.
in Artrage for Win, to pan (drag) you have to press the RMB (is the button on the side on the pen, the nearest to the drawing tip).
this button, in combination with "SHIFT" and "ALT" make "ZOOM" and "ROTATE" canvas.
may be, on Mac too, you can change the button assignment in the configuration panel of the tablet.

Don't worry about things software-wise. You will get the hang of it.
My advise: If you want one, then save your money and buy one. You'll won't regret it!
Ofcourse your computer has to be in shape in some level, but even technology from 2 years ago will do.

Thanks for the advice mate. I'm thinking of buying an intuos or similar and then making one of these if I see the need for it.

first of all, i would say that photoshop is not the unique paint program of the world :-)
it is only the most used by the Pro's and it is out of my financial availability.
aside to ArtRage (that you see in the video) i use Paint Shop Pro, it has almost the same functionality of PS but at a fraction of the cost.

I've always wanted to know, do the diy cintiqs lag a bit?
because in some videos it looks like it does and in others it doesn't.
xguy2gk 4 years ago
if i have well understood, you mean: is there a little delay between pen movement and cursor movement?
i think yes! and you can notice it when you move the pen quickly.
this depends by the pen recognition/connection speed of the tablet and mainly by the computer speed you're working on.
but the delay exists in the mouse also! you cannot verify this because the mouse is on the desk and the cursor is on the screen :-D
...cheers
vince56 4 years ago
that is corrent even with Cintiq itself. If you runnign Painter X on slow comp with big brush the delay is really big. The software recognizes tilt of the pen, speed, acceleration, pressure, movement and eventually airbrush wheel with ink. So even with 4 GB ram on 400 PTS brush you have 3 sec delay.

Very nice. No jitter at all, and very well calibrated. I'm impressed. I think you need a harder covering over your lcd though. I can see the pressure marks you're making as you go over the screen. Having been lucky enough to actually have used both a cintiq and a tablet pc, I can tell you that it takes extreme pressure on them to produce the same type of lcd discoloration that you're getting there.
Wraith3 4 years ago
Thank you Wraith3 for your comment, it was a very preliminary test and there was nothing covering the display, so pressure marks.
i'm building a new case covered by a tempered glass just to avoid any pressure on the LCD.
when the build will be completed i'll show some sketching session.
