When was this originally written? I red a Morris/Coscinny Lucky Luke-book and there was a can can girl in a saloon singing "with red silk stockings..." Could the song be from 19th century originally?
I think this was originally a pop tune--I have a big band version by Ray McKinley that sounds like it is from the 1940s. Also recorded by Smiley Wilson and Rog Hogsed. The Maddox Brothers and Rose used to do it in live performances.
Grandpa Jones recorded "A High Silk Hat And A Gold Top Walking Cane" for RCA Victor in 1954. That's completely different song made famous by Bill Cox in 1930.
Yes, Archie Campbell covered this song in the 60's. It was featured on "The Cockfight and Other Tall Tails". Personally, it's my favorite version of this song. Its structure is more similar to Black Jack Wayne's version than it is to Sammy Kaye's. Pick you up a copy of that album, I highly recommend it.

"Dancing with a stranger" is the intended A side and I like it best. Interesting that this side gets far more visits.
