Germany won EURO 96 due to strong organization, intense discpline and a guy called Dieter Eilts that guy stopped everything going german goal direction (ball and player) and he's not even a defender, if there is any one deserves the unsung hero title its him.. a F football legend.

@walkergon you forgot about west germany - czechoslovakia 1976 euro cup final. a fantastic thrilling game just like this one. it's somewhere on youtube, I highly recommend watching it. Some say Panenka's winning penalty is the most spectacular ever taken and I agree considering what an important match it was. Czechoslovakia won against one of the best German sides ever, which won the World Cup two years before. that match is a must see for every football fan!

@demsche Klar waren Kahn und Klos gut,ich denke auch sie waren besser als Köpke.Kahn wurde ja nicht umsonst Nachfolger.Aber damals galt noch das Kronprinzprinzip.Da Köpke hinter Illgner die Nr.2 war wurde er gewählt.Gott sei dank macht man das heute nicht mehr, sonst hätten wir Hildebrand im Tor.

Trotzdem hat Köpke einen großen Anteil am Gewinn der EM96,auch 98 war er unschuldig am Ausscheiden des Teams.Ich hätte gerne mal Kahn bei den Vereinen gesehen,für die Köpke aufgelaufen ist.

@Yebirax das waren Kiel Frankfurt Nürnberg und Marseille und Kahn war damals bei Karlsruhe auch nicht unbedingt eine gute Mannschaft......das mit Hildebrand naja wäre er bei Stuttgart geblieben und hätte regelmäßig gespielt weiss man nicht ob das nicht vieleicht auch nicht ne gute lösung wäre....Hildebrand war ein klasse Torwart.....und bei der WM 98 war Köpke aufjedenfall mitschuld......schau dir mal die gegentore gegen Kroatien an -.- die ganze Mannschaft war eine frecheit

Kohler was a phenomenal player in 1996 and arguably the world's best defender at that time. His absence was a greater loss than that of Matthaeus. (Effenberg had, as far as I remember, resigned from international play by his own accord. This had nothing to do with Vogts.)
