  • you miss the point, to move away from so called 'pedestrian and moronic bass parts, people do practice, but learning to become a skilled musician takes time, and people move thru stages..i would have quite happily agreed with your comments until you revealed your true lower brain function by implying that peolpe who cannot or do not wish to play complicated bass parts are 'morons'.... i fear it's you who are the moron in this instance..

  • @ddcort18 However, you have misunderstood Geddy from the outset. There are just so many bassists, famous ones, who get by by simply playing the root of each chord, or somesuch. He is not insulting those who can't do it yet, he is expressing his disapproval for those who can but don't; bassists who don't take themselves out of their comfort zone and simply resort to one-note-a-bar basslines their entire career. Quit the name calling, fellow bassists.

  • Fantastic bass player, but some of us are not as skilled, and are still learning,.and have to make do with playing 'moronic, pedestrian parts'..have to say i'm a bit disappointed with him for using those words to express the point.

  • @ddcort18 Nah, those words are fair. If you want to play complicated parts, practice. If not, stay a moron.

  • It's amazes me that he is such an individual bass player. He doesn't just want to plug into an amp and play he wants to make sure he sound great and he does. He is a real inspirational character for both the younger and older generation. Just listening to him speak makes me want to pick up my bass and just play. He is amazing.

  • Geddy Lee, one of the only bassist that can make chords sound good on a bass.

  • His regular speaking voice sounds exactly like Chester Benington, the lead singer of Linkin Park for those who might not know his name.

  • I would give my left nut to be this interviewer

  • 4:47 sounds like hysteria

  • @shed412 It's called "Armor and Sword" from the Snakes & Arrows album, but it doesn't sound similar to Hysteria.

Hysteria actually sounds like Malignant Narcissism.

  • Your video is popular on Switzerland

  • i struggle to get that speed using 2 fingers!

  • Awesome. The man is a living legend!

  • Your video went viral on Dominica

  • "I couldn't get funky enough." thats what I said when people asked me about my hair.

  • i want to hear what geddy lee thinks about victor wooten.

  • For him, i started to play bass.

  • I have to admit... I miss the tone he used to get with the Rickenbacker and a backline. Though I do understand why he went the way he did with the Jazz and the DI through Sansamp and all that.

  • Wow,... I've been a Rush fan for close to 33 years and I've never seen Geddy on such an intimate personal level like this. Amazing guy and bass player who has inspired my playing tremendously. He is cool.

  • Geddy Lee is cool. If you don't think he's cool then you're just not that cool.

  • la villa bass solo for the win

  • @reoreian87 A Fender Jazz Bass, a fantastic bass that's been around for ages. His signature version is $999 here in Canada, which is pretty reasonable considering how much they could have charged for it.

  • The one thing I love about Geddy us he never lets you know too much about how he plays. I mean Chris Squire, Jeff Berlin, Jaco, Billy Sheehan, all these great bass players release instructional DVD's, youtube video's and such, but Geddy is one of those few great bass players that never really reveals how he plays. I mean we get 2 or 3 leaked isolated bass parts and a snippet of an interview where he shows you a song like this one where he show's Animate. Thats basically it. He's so fascinating.

  • Geddy, I Love You Man !!!!!

  • Yep.....huge inspiration. This guy is the only reason I play bass now and have for almost 40 years.

  • Would be nice to know what devices he use to record, once they mention about 3 of them, I guess all learners want to know!!!

  • @daltinhorp

i did read once that he record 3 tracks together, 1 mic, 1 through avalon pre amp, and another through rack....something like that. Then he blend/mix all 3 tracks to get the final bass sound track....

  • @daltinhorp The same devices he uses live - A SansAmp RPM preamp, a Palmer PDI-05 Speaker Simulator (a rackmount device as well), and an Avalon U-5 DI box. For my Ampeg SVT-5 setup I use I couple both a SansAmp RPM and RBI together and run the rest of the setup with a dry signal and I can get pretty close; yet, it's my own sound at the same time. I'm very happy with what I got.

  • When he went to grab the bass, i got goosebumps lol

  • geddy lee is god

  • After all these years i still learn from Ged and I am a guitarist/synth player!

  • Wow, this is a great interview. It gets so tiring seeing the same round of interviews on different media outlets that have the band all playing the same thing. Great to see him just talking and picking.

  • I'm so glad Geddy realized his mistake with too many keyboards....I don't like the keyboard years at all, and I am a huge Rush fan...I'm just glad he snapped out of it to bring great new music....long live Rush!

  • you can tell that he really loves playing bass.

  • Geddy Lee is the I've heard to mention Paul McCartney and his Bass style.

  • he just couldn't get funky enough with it.

  • what amp/ cab is he using during this interview??...I think the amp is a GK 800RB , no idea on the cab....am I right??

  • Geddy Lee talking about how awesome Paul McCartney is... that's the dream.

  • i'm with ged here on the whole just shove the keyboard onto the pedal and groove over it, but i remember in the movie that the main reasons ged moved away from the keys was A. they wanted to get back to a more rock sound and more importantly: B. alex was getting tired of working around the keyboard. i guess now after all this time, he just doesn't dig them at all.

  • @bassguy511 You need to understand that true artists rarely sound like their influences, especially when writing with other people like RUSh collaborate.

  • @bassguy511 - re: different groups, Geddy is also a GIANT Bjork fan. I really love and respect how diverse the band's musical interests are (ie - old interviews with them talking about Talking Heads, The Police, Blondie, etc etc). Some music fans treat genres like sports teams and get closed minded as a result, and that's kind of boring when there's so much great stuff out there. :)

  • @bassguy511 - Listen to Paperback Writer, McCartney was no slouch. :)

  • @bassguy511 What are you talking about? Everyone is a Beatles fan. They have sold 700 million albums.

  • It looks like he brain fart when he played the part for Armor and Sword.

  • I love Rush to death. However I don't how these guys can be so enthusiastic after all these years. Truly amazing.

  • I love it when interviewers edit it so we just hear the subject talk. So much easier to listen to. Great insights here!

  • If geddy lee was showin to ME how he plays his bass like that,, just talking and randomly showin his techinques,,, I´D SHIT IN MY PANTS. How could the interviewer not be like HOLLY SHIT GEDDY LEE IS TALKING WITH ME ABOUT BASS.

    Geddy is just my hero

  • Great interview! It´s interesting to hear about Mr. Lee´s influences, because he was the reason I started to play bass 18 years ago.

  • All hail the great Geddy

  • Comment removed

  • Can any bass players out there please correct me if Im wrong! Im a drummer but it seems to me that Geddy has an unusual style of playing bass.Is this correct? CHEERS.

  • What an amazing person and bass player and to think Mark King (LEVEL 42) admires him as well.

  • @yes90125 King is a shredder in his own way and he KNOWS The Geddman is The MAN

  • this is my man......enough said.

  • "This is my instrument, this is the one I want to play!" Just another reason why Geddy is my favorite bassist. And what he said is true for so many of us who play bass because we heard Geddy play it on the radio.

  • Answer to the first Frame question = FUCK YES!

  • He's the reason I picked up a bass

  • slappedddda bassssss!

  • Great interview, what a genius on so many levels. Brillian to hear him talk about how he likes to use a slice of technology to free himself to play traditional instrumentation.

  • i agree, sample the keys, and use the pedals, and play bass. its amazing what alot of players have accomplished on pedals. Rutherford is probably the most impressive.

  • Geddy Lee is a musical genius.

  • Wow Geddy has surprisingly strong words about the keyboards - I didn't know he resented being away from his bass THAT much...probably a good thing though, the heavier stuff is definitely cooler now...

  • of course he plays the Animate bassline to illustrate his 90s style. haha

  • Hell Yeah Geddy! Keep it real with the bass and sample YOUR synth passes...what a fuckin' bad ass.

  • Geddy Lee, along with John Entwistle, is the reason bass is my favourite instrument to play, they really inspire me.

  • Spirit of radio - one of the best rock tracks ever written.

  • He probably hates playing subdivisions nowadays then!

  • Great interview. Geddy is the man!

  • Great interview, I've been looking for videos of Geddy holding his bass in hand and explaining his technique etc. Killer

  • Lol so even Geddy himself hates the keyboards...that's a shame ; ; my favorite albums are mid 80s ones

  • Good decision on sticking with the bass and playing that live! It just sounds a lot better and more powerful with the drums and guitar.

  • 2:31 <----------This is for my drummer who always wants me to play with a pick. Tone comes from ware? ha ha! I know a pick sounds better SOMETIMES.B-)

  • 3:00 that's what happens when you tour with les claypool

  • Geddy lee Is a God !!!!!!!!!!

  • Everything Geddy Lee said just makes him even more of my favorite bass player. I wish I could be half as good as he is lol.

  • Sweet interview thanks for uploading. The bit in the first part about changing from a rickenbacker to a fender bass during moving pictures was interesting because you dont realize they sound different until you know what to look for.

  • That's cool how he makes his bass sound like a classical guitar.

  • Thank you so much for sharing!!

  • awesome interview

  • Cool Man. I really like what he is saying about "Keeping up with technology" from 7:15...

  • Such huge inspiration and influence this man has had on me.
