  • If I was building this, I'd save on the pipe clamps by drilling the timber and coiling through the holes. Just a thought.

  • what if there's no sun?

  • hi=if you increase the lenght of that black hose to 1000 feet or more==would that help into heating up the water more-??and does it matter what type of hose i use ??or must it be black==??=-i live in a place with lots of very hot sun--yet my pool still cold--will appreciate ur answer--and congratulation on a very logical excelent idea--

  • There was a Japanese design of solar panel, with a blow up clear cover, may be one way to increase output would be to bag the unit with clear poly film to aid production temperature & if you could rig it with the sump switch a low temperature cut out, to stop the pump wastfully running if the shadowing gets too much.

  • Why be so cheap inground pools ar where its @

  • Go to solarsunpacifc website for best solar pool panel prices. We'll do our best to beat any price.

  • Out of all of the innovative ways to het your pool, your way looks the best. Neatest, chepest and most efficient. Thanks for the video!!!!

  • Awesome! Love BTLS.COM

  • Just throw a black panel in the pool or paint the bottom black. This was a big waste of time, effort, money and materials. Plus 85 degrees is pretty low, my garden hose gets hotter than that.

  • i was wondering if the system still works and if the harbor freight pump did not fail because i was thinking of getting that same pump

  • 3 ppl don't like pools and saving energy while making the world a greener place to live

  • Awesome video, thanks for sharing!!

  • Damn critics are annoying arent they lol, i get them on my videos all the time, i think people get mad at a thorough well shot video and have to hunt for something to bitch about....... damn know it alls lol

  • Ned Dragons

  • my intex heater stopped working

  • I got a pool heater thats free..... just get all the neighborhood kids to come over and piss in it till it turns yellow. kinda smells funny afterward but it works and its warm and its free.

  • My solar cover works good too, but only for about 9" down, and then it's just "turn your nuts blue" cold for the rest of the pool. I think I'll build this heater this summer because the results look promising. Thanks for this vid!

  • sorry i guess i didn't finish listening to the full video,, very excited about it.. i can't wait to get started on my own now..

  • for the 400 feet of tube,,, what is the average temp that your pool gets too?? and what is the temp of the water coming back into the pool???

  • WOW but the following product is the way to heat an Intex Pool

    El Nino pool solar heater

  • nice alot better then some huge long pipe that look like crap yours in that coil looks nice good job man

  • Just throw an active hair dryer in there. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG!

  • Hi, good video, but do you realise that as long as your pool gets direct sunlight too, you're actually better off just throwing the black tubing straight in the pool. Even better, buy a $10 sheet of black plastic a few rocks and put it in the bottom of the pool. No pump required and all heat transferred diredt to the water.

  • Great stuff , subbed

  • not ment for canada try getting water out of there and ruins the roof

  • may I ask where you bought your tubing?

    thanks m

  • Ever considered putting a temperature switch in the system? Putting a conversion to a bigger tube, putting in the temperature switch, and running the pump through that would ensure that only after the irrigation tube was at a desired temperature would the pump run. You can get them on ebay for fairly cheap. Just a thought, great work on it! Happy swimming!

  • Nice Job! I'm gooing to be doing something similar, how many gallons is your pool?

  • cool i like it looks good thanks for posting.

  • Hahaa I've been too it pool (it's so fun)

  • I did this also, made two 200 foot coils -one on each side of the roof- with just a little water fountain pump. Worked great, the temp coming back into the pool is 109 F. and the pool is now 92 F from 65 F. GREAT IDEA. Only spent 45 $ without pump.

  • i got the cheapest idea, black plastic on the bottom of the pool

  • i havesame setup , started with 400 ft then went to garage sales, bought every hose i could, now have 1600ft t' d off from 1, 3/4 hp pool pump i get a 15degree rise at 6 gpm from 83 to 95 if i slow it i can get 3gpm at 110 , turn it off for a half hour it will get to 140 ish had to use a turkey therm pool thernm stops 115. i c0vered a 15 x 36 cabana/shed and made tw0 4x8 panels covered in driveway seal. now i'm going metal , and workin on a 55 gln drum fire heater w pipe heatexchanger . goodjob

  • Great idea. My only concern would be the leaching of chemicals into the water from the hose. Soaking in water containing toxins released from the poly tubing is not such a good idea.

  • does this really work? we have an above ground 18' x 4' pool and the water is freezing. im not down with spending up to a grand on a heater. our pump is 3/4hp I think. is that too big or how would I modify this to work with our pool pump???

  • Comment removed

  • I can make it cheaper. Buy a black tarp rubber/vinel runner and put it at the bottom of the pool. Or paint the pool black. The black absorbs the heat and stays in the water. No need for tubing or pump. Less work and no unsightly roof attachments.

  • ....or you could just buy a solar cover...

  • Are you sure you have 400 feet of irrigation tubing ? you said 20 bucks for 200 feet, Im trying to find tubing but 400 feet is way more than 40 bucks...where did you purchase it from ? btw great video..I am designing my set up right now

  • Can I use 1/2" or 3/4" poly tubing?

  • Fantastic my friend very nice great job

  • Thanks for this cool video. I happen to have a pump like this and have wanted to build a solar water heater for a long time so your idea is going to spur me to do something about it!

  • Is this OK for a intex 15x46?

  • I'm going to go make one! I already have a pump from winter flooding...I'll try to post up how well it goes for me. Thanks for the video. Our's is an inground pool, but should work just the same. I'm excited at the possibility.

  • info...the sun is on the next side...lol

  • Don't all those clamps put space between the tubes and make it less efficient? Maybe a clamp on every 4th or 5th tube, securing others to that with cable ties to keep the tubes touching as much as possible.

  • @Babaziba

I would say the contrary. The space between the tubes allows the sunlight to reach a bigger surface of the tube; the tubes touching each other will block out light.

    Regards from Mexico

  • Vid stopped short on me, I put a non return valve on the inlet, so it doesnt have to keeping reaching height every day.

  • Pump is way too large. You should only need a 1/16 hp pump. You only need to lift the water 1" then siphon will take over. We circulate heated water for a 8 floor hotel with a 1/3 hp pump. The smaller pump will move the water slower and it'll pick up the heat better.

  • Can you recommend a 1/16 hp pump with the lift I need and the capacity to pump through 400 ft of tube? I would love a pic of your 1/3 hp pump with 70'of lift!

  • @gwsl311 you don't have 70' of lift. Effectively there is no lift at all, just circulation of a syphon.

You will need enough head to start the syphon, 0.454 PSI per foot of height to the top of the coil (looks like no more than 16 ft = about 7.3 PSI

  • @ozzirt That is great for the system when it's operating continuously. What does he do when he's lost his prime? I'd imagine he'll be dealing with a motor and pump need far beyond that he needed for just maintaining circulation in a static system.

  • @btwbrand He still only needs a pump that develops 8 psi, also if his system does not leak there is no reason why he would lose the suction. Just keep both inlet and discharge ends under the water level.

It is my business to know these things.

  • @gwsl311 : You don't need 70' of lift due to siphon principal, the leg on the downward side has as much energy as the upward side. You only need that much lift to get the coils filled initially, not to keep going. Height doesn't matter if both legs are equal. HOWEVER - - - the weight of water will only support a column so high, before enough vacuum causes boiling at low temperature (due to the vacuum). You will need enough pressure to overcome that.

  • @gwsl311 lol when I read the other comment the only thing going through my mind was, it's on the roof. Thanks for the vid I tried to find something like this last year but had no luck so thanks again!

  • @gwsl311 I know this comment was a year ago but maybe it's the heat

differential that causes the circulation. The first house I ever built back

in 1971-72 we installed a circulating hot water system that had no

pump at all. This house was 2 story (granted, not 8 stories).

  • @gwsl311

Don't need 70' of lift, your roof isn't more than 12'.

  • you do forget that the hose is rolled up, so

the water flow is getting alot of resistance

because it has to spin around for about 45 times before it returns into the pool.

It's the same as a long electricity cable that is rolled up on a drum that is getting hot when you run alot of power to it.

I got about the same setup as in the vid,

and at i don't get alot of water coming out at the end, so a 1/16 pump would do nothing at all.

  • @zeedee21 it wont move it any faster depending on the horsepower, thats based on motor rpm, all the hp is good for is feet of head..it will still move at the same velocity, he just has a little extra umph!

  • you need good pump to push water up to the roof,(15-25f) flat tubing will help more then round, black asphalt shingles works, try to look online for old jacuzzi pump they should work well. if you don't use pool, cover it with black tarp or dark cover :)

  • @zeedee21 Slowing down the flow of water will reduce the heating rate. It is true that lower flow will increase the discharge temperature, but the heat flow Q=m*Cp*dT will decrease. The inside-tube heat transfer coefficient becomes lower as fluid velocity (Reynold's number) decreases. Increased flow decreases cold fluid temperature, but increases temperature driving force, whcih also increases heat trasnfer rate. Bottom line, higher water flow = more heat. (Dr. J. Steed, BASc, PhD, P.Eng)

  • is your electric bill going up?

  • make one for 10 bucks get copper pipe and throw it into fire and lead the tubes into the water and it will pump warm water into the tub

  • Make sure you have that pump on a ground fault interrupter. You don't want a toaster-in-tub scenario there.

I had a pump like that fail, would have been a real shock hazard in the water if the interrupter hadn't disconnected it first.

  • Yes it is on a GFCI. In the video I show that it is tethered to the side of the pool. When it comes time to swim, the pump is turned off and removed from the pool and hangs on the outside. Thanks for pointing out that I should have stressed this more i the video.

  • 12volt is safer

  • @gschjetne Just to let you know all homes built in the last 20 years are required to have a GFCI outlet by law on the receptical even if it is not the physical GFCI it's self but on a leg of it off the first GFCI in wet locations like outside receptical next to doors.

  • What model # pump is this?

  • would a 1/3 HP submersible pump be able to handle this?

  • I love this! Very clever.

  • Could you come to my house? LOL very informative I just need a man to help me do that lol

  • i did the same, only i also made a large

case were i put in the hose, and a plexiglass plate over it.

the extra effect is that the case acts like a little greenhouse witch prevents the hot air from escaping, so the hose is getting extra warm.

  • What kind of temperatures do you get out of the return? How much temp rise have you seen in the pool?

  • The output is about 85 degrees when the sun is out. The pool temp is hoovering around 80 degrees. Our average air temp has been about 67 degrees. Last year, without the heater, the pool temp was about 70 degrees.

  • you should have connected it to your pool pump

  • My existing filter/pump unit was not sufficient to handle both tasks.

  • Cool! Good video.
