  • @Hreinn91 Not true. That's like saying they're the ultimate race. Don't be ignorant and post irrelevant opinions.

  • @Giodamus Yeah you're right, that was pretty bigoted of me. Don't be alarmed that's not my opinion =P

  • deano

certainly as someone growing up in this era I remember Ovett as an athlete who could do almost anything and was basically unbeatable. I still remember the day of the first Ovett/Coe race at the Moscow Olympics and can remember exactly where I was and being unable to really decide who would win.

My comment really stemmed from a number of newspaper articles in the UK where Coe's name was used and there was no mention of Ovett.

By the way, I'm not a Coe-hater, both were superb :)

  • Breathing problems in the 84 olympics because of the LA smog robbed him of another Olympics. If he'd won gold there then his achievements would rank him alongside Coe. Unfortunately he seems to be the forgotten man when people write of that era with Coe's name often appearing as the dominant player. As it was an amazing athlete who seemed capable of almost any feat between 77 - 80/81

  • I don't think he's the forgotten man at all! Their names will always be linked. Ovett was an Olympic champion and a multi world record holder. His place as an all-time great in the athletic firmament is assured. He did enough between 77 and 81 (83 if you include the WR) to be remembered.

  • Twenty-one years old and destroyed the reigning Olympic champion. Such a great athlete.

  • magnificent athlete and now magnificent commentator.

2 world mile records, 3 x1500metre world records

    2 x mile world records

    olympic 800metre gold medal

    european 1500metre gold

    2 world cup 1500metre wins

    commonwealth 5000metre gold

    LEGEND

  • Don't forget 77 1500m European Cup gold and his 45 consecutive wins over 1500/Mile.

He really should have also won the 800 & 1500 double in Prague 78. Beyer was late named as part of the GDR national state doping programme.

  • we could only dream on what could've been if Ovett was not injured in 82 and 83

  • Same goes for Coe. Their double act would have continued up to LA. More records would have been set and more medals won. There was nothing Cram, Aouita, Scott, etc did in the 82 & 83 seasons that matched the ability of Coe & Ovett from 79-81.

  • @yellcarreon Everyone gets injured that is life. He did the best he could with the time he had just like the rest of us mere mortals.

  • The one and only Steve Ovett at this time 1977 to 1979 he was unbeatable, only in the euro's in 1978 when Beyer beat him but that was drug assisted
