Petal band is a very good clean band with a good sound. How in the world South Haven beat you I will never know. Your band performs a show for half time which is what I thought marching bands were suppose to do, not try to do a concert band performance on the field. I got bored with south haven real fast. I think the judges forgot what a half time show is suppose to do.

I'm from Choctaw. I read all the comments, but to make this fair both bands were good. Petal H.S. your designs are really unique and thats good. Fort Walton you sound better then you have ever sounded. After seeing both shows I liked Fort Waltons alittle better. Petal and Fort Walton are some of the best bands to compete in that comp. and both should be proud and stop aruging. Petal I don't know how hard you worked but I know it most have been hard. But I know Fort Walton works just as hard.

It was a good year for Petal - not the best. That is acknowledgeable. It doesn't matter who worked harder, who's show was the most entertaining/well excecuted, or any of that jazz.

I'm a Petal band mom & enjoyed the ft. walton beach competition very much. I absolutely loved Tate's show! Wish you'd planted the American flag that night so it would have been on the dvd I bought! Petal's show was incredible this year! FL bands just have a different style than we do...more college style. MS bands tell stories on the field (Tate came the closest to our style)...their shows are always exciting no matter how many times you see them!

Petal Shows are also more Drum Corps style sounding than others in MS. Notice the heavy brass sound throughout the band. :)

I just watched FWs show and it was a good show. It was boring i hate to say. Good sound alot of people but it wasn't a cover drill it was good drill but it just put me to sleep they had 2 volumes loud and louder and it was still was boring and i didnt get the point of the show. what was the concept in it? I guess ill have to go next year. And bands from MS have taken plenty of FL trophies bush. But the south in general has great bands top 5 southern states are TX MS FL TN and probably AL.

Petal is easliy one of the best bands in the south. In the top 5 no doubt i've seen all the "best bands in the south" and petal is up there but most of all petal considers the crowd it's not a boring judge pleasing show. I'm from mississippi and i went to a 5a school that wasn't petal and all i got to say is GO PETAL!!!!!!!

They arew good but i doubt you have gone to Bands of America in Atlanta, the bands there are tuely the best in America and many of them were from the Florida/Mississippi area.

We don't have that much money to go every year.

We like doing stuff that's important to us, like being in the Inaugural parade. :)

As lead trumpet player at Petal, I know what it means to work hard. I apologize for other people down-rating your band and Fort Walton Beach's organization. I watched Tate's show --- it was good, very good. As was Fort Walton Beach. We had issues in our show that we resolved before our final performance, and really that it all that people will remember (for us. State Championship Competition is the only one that matters).

But its not very cool that you guys are on here dissing us and Fort Walton we work just as hard as you do and theres always next year we wanted to win too trust me but theres nothing we can do now so just wait til next year and give it everything and quit talking about how fort walton beach and Tate are over rated please !!!!

Actually It has happend before. A Band from Georgia or Alabama won at the West Florida Classic and not a Florida Band. And Personally, I think you guys did better than FWB.

Sorry to disappoint, but we (the Petal Band) do not do shows for the sake of a high score from a panel of judges. We do it for the audience's entertainment. The only thing we are really concerned with is whether or not the people watching us stand and cheer or not. Personally, I think we did a pretty good job doing that this year.

The way i remember is that we're from out of state and to most people it matters more to entertain than to brag.... not one musician i know brags about how well they did... get over your self and focus on what matters .... winning contest isn't everything.. producing music and entertaining people is what matters. .. once you figure that out... then you will know why the petal band does what it does..!!!!! ..... sorry but no... winning or losing.. making a show is what matters

The Petal High School Band won the MHSAA/MBA State 5A Marching Band Championship on Saturday in Clinton. The 150 member band, in its first year of competition in Class 5A, not only won the overall title but won caption awards for Best Overall Visual and Marching, Best Overall General Effect, Best Overall Music and Best Overall Percussion.
