Hello, thecinadesk. I even tend to agree! Schipa is...'just' another sort of "refinement", I'd say. In my opinion he delivers a more nostalgic interpretation of "Amapola", whereas Kraus is decidedly "modern".
For me the key is whether the performing artist extracts the full potential of an aria or song.
Each aria or song contains certain expressive potential. This potential is unique to it, and is based on its specific character.
Mediocre performers don't really "grok" what that potential is. Instead of expressing that potential, they rush to "embellish" the aria or song, imaging that they are "adding value" to it.
(And then we could 'argue' about whose "Dal labbro il canto" is 'better'. All that is only possible because some great people like kraustrujillo and others POST such gems on youtube. A fountain of everlasting pleasures, indeed it is!)
His singing is......what you Americans say?......."Goldilock". Not too high pitch as in Mario Lanza. He also struck a balance between soft and loud. With some tenor you could hardly hear the soft note.

Great performance-a little more wildy passionate than we are used to from him
There are several other compelling versions, as there are with many of these songs

Kraus is simply amazing.
His rendition of Musica Proibita was definitive. His rendition of Mattinata is also definitive.
For other songs or arias, other tenors have recorded versions that edge Kraus' versions out.
But just leaving behind one definitive rendition of anything is an accomplishment.
Leaving behind two is one hell of an achievement.

"Amapola" is unsurpassed, too.

Dear crimsontoxic,
Kraus' rendition of Amapola is superb.
I would probably give Tito Schipa a tiny edge on that song though.
But it's close either way.

Thanks for posting this lovely recording. Kraus has full command of this aria and descends from note to note without swooping.
