  • You are welcome! And if you are in High School and doing this kind of stuff, that makes you all very smart! And the teacher must be quite good to be teaching you this sort of stuff!!

  • I figured out how to change my scale, just in case anyone else wants to know all you have to do is right click on the X axis and select the format axis tool. There will be a heading Axis Options and just highlight the minimum circle to fix and change to whatever number you want to start with. This is probably super obvious to everyone else lol, anyway thank so much for a really good video !!!

  • You are welcome for the video! I am glad you figured out how to change the min and max on the horizontal axis!

  • Thank you for this video it's so helpful! I have used your method to create two boxplots and they look great! However for my thrid I need the scale to start at 30 instead of 0 is this possible? Thanks again for a truly informative video!

  • Thank you so much! I have used your method to create two box plot graphs which look great. For my thrid boxplot, I want the scale to begin at 30 instead of 0 is this possible? Anyway Thanks again for a very helpful video!

  • You are welcome!

  • amazing, genius, seriously omg.

  • I am glad that you like it!

  • You are a life saver. You made this seems so simple. Without this helpful video, I would not have been able to create a box plot for my homework assignment in Economic and Business Statistics. I just cant thank you enough thank you thank you thank you. I had pause the video and do it step by step as you were doing it to complete all 3 box plots I had to create at one time, but I did it. I had three sheets open at one time creating. Thanks again for your help

  • You are welcome! After teaching Stats for a long time and listening to students complaints, I posted these videos so just so that students had some visual help when they study (and to show how to create stats in the most relevant real world tool; Excel)!!

  • you sir, are an excel genius

  • No genius, just a guy having fun with Excel!!

  • This is cool !

  • I AM CONFUSED!

  • can you do TWO box plots in ONE chart?

  • Yes. One way o do it is created second data poinst, then with the already created chart selected, go to ChartTools Design Ribbon and in the Data group click the Select Data button and add, edit or delete serties values (numbers) and or categorical data (labels).

  • @ExcelIsFun is that how you do it on 2007? can you please be more detailed? please and thank you

  • That is how to do it in 2007.

  • The instructions for doing a box & whisker plot are easier than any other I've seen. I would point out that a vertical box & whisker plot can be made in just the same way as a horizontal plot by using a stacked column chart and following the same formatting steps as for the stacked bar chart. This give you the median in the plot which the open/high/low/close stock plot doesn't--and you don't have to put a bogus date in the plot data.

  • Thanks for the Hot Tip!!!

  • When I do my box plot there is always a line on the bottom. I think it's a continuation of the line on the right side. How can change that?

  • Sorry. I do not.

  • @Pink4Kim

I think you're talking about a shadow. Select the box, then go to format, then effects, then shadow, then choose "No Shadow".

  • Thanks a lot, bro! I can do my assignment easily now

  • You are welcome!

  • nvm excellsfun

  • ExcelIsFun, The labels aint copying when i copy and paste to word 2007, help! the ones in blue

  • @ExcelIsFun Why don't you try another software? It would make your tutorials even better than they already are!

  • I thank u my good sir, I would like to ask something.. how do distinguish between symmetric or right/left skewed from the box plot?

  • These are the only other tricks I know for box plot: to show the relative positions of mean, median:

Excel & Statistics 49: Outliers & Box Plot with Median and Mean

  • For some reason, once I switch from row to column, the values for my X axis go out of range. Is there a way around this?

  • I do not understand your question.

  • You are a DON!! (In english slang - A BOSS!! or A COOL GUY!!) Helped so much thank you

  • You are welcome!

  • Great vid. You have helped out sooooo many college students

  • I am glad that it helps sooo many!

  • THANK YOU

  • I am glad that it helped!

  • Could I use this method to compare two boxplots side by side? Or can this method only be used for one boxplot?

    Thanks!

  • I have not tried it - but I think that you can do it with the "Open-High-Low-Close Stock Chart". Just have more than one data series.

  • Thank you professor Girvin! I had the neatest box plot in my class thanks to your lesson.

  • You are welcome!

  • Great lesson! Very easy to follow and you explained things so well. I'm definitely subscribing, your videos are going to come in very handy for my statistics class this semester.

This was the last graph I needed for tomorrow's report and your vid saved me! Thank you!

  • I am glad that it helped!!!

  • @ExcelIsFun Oh it really did! My Lecturer has a major love of aesthetically pleasing graphs. No exports from a stats package will do. I will present him tomorrow with a beautiful set of charts with a lovely two tone blue motif. It adds nothing to the quality of the work but I'd put money on it earning me another 10-15%!

  • EXCELlent!!!!

I hope the video helped to get to your goal!

  • Best help on this topic so far - I'll utilize this for many excel projects coming up - thanks!

  • this is the best explanation anywhere...thanks...this also works for 2010...slight differences..but one can figure it out based on your instructions....

BTW, is it possible to compare 2 box plots next to ea. other? not sure if that question makes any sense.

  • I have not tried it, but you should be able to highlight two sets of data and then select chart type.

  • loved love loved loved loved this video!

  • I am glad it was helpful!!

  • LEGENDARY <3

  • Thanks!

  • In the video we added Minus 100% error bar to the 2nd invisible bar and Plus Custom to the 4th invisible bar. Why don’t you also add a Minus 100% error bar to the 1st invisible bar and see if that works.

  • @ExcelIsFun Thankyou, this worked very well for my minus figure. :)

  • You are welcome!

  • thanks heaps :)

no offence but i like how you didnt cut any bits of the video out and when you stuttered it made it kinda entertaining xD

  • Woo Hoo!! I am glad that the video helped!

  • Thanks a bunch! I've never used Excel before my college math class. It's a lot of steps but it gets us what we need, right?

  • You are welcome!

  • Would I be right to think this wouldn't work if the box plot needs to cross the axis? (i.e. the min or Q1 are negative)

  • Yes, it should work.

  • @ExcelIsFun I tried it. I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure it doesn't work if the plot crosses the axis. (e.g. if Q1 is negative).

I ended up finding a solution at peltiertech(dot)com. There's a page there discussing box and whisker plots and what to do about negative values but it was complicated. Love your work though!

  • Cool. peltiertech(dot)com is good!!
