Takistater You said it better than I ever could have! hes amazing and should do what he loves. It will be good no matter what, he has such talent. Better if he enjoys what he is doing
To be honest I don't care who John's fans are or who listens to his music. As long as they appreciate his music for what it is, I'm happy. John Mayer is one in a million and I think that's something everyone NEEDS to see. So who care's if you 12 or 112, if you love and feel his music, then your age or gender shouldn't matter.
Is it just me or in this video when john mayer has sunglasses does he look Bam Margera? Before you all start hating im not compairing John mayer to Bam just asked a question. There is a Difference
I can't be "involved" with Mayer anymore. I just have to listen at a distance. I hate his fans. It's so much different than it was 6,7 years ago. Buncha goddamn stupid Twilight type girls who invariably have something to say about his looks, as if it has ANYthing to do with anything. And the guys who pretend they know what guitar playing is by suddenly jumping on the blues train - guarantee they don't own a blues collection or know any history. And for christ's sake this doesn't sound like Dylan
@BrannonMcConkey I feel it man. I'll always be a big JM fan 'cause he's a great songwriter, performer, and musician, but the scene is just too much. The last time I went to see him, it was as you said- a bunch of girls who want to bang him, and a bunch of "blues guitarists" who pretty much go "Albert who?"
At the end of the day Mayer writes pop (and I for one, love pop). It's ridiculous to compare him to people like Bob Dylan and Neil Young; or even SRV for that matter.
@BrannonMcConkey Quite honestly I'd rather be around girls with crushes than music snobs. People like his guitar playing, which is a form of melodic blues, it is blues, deal with that. What does knowing the history give you, music is meant to be listened to not researched.
i'm kinda tired of the blues thing, and this is a nice change, although this music has a little bit on it, but this reminds me more of him in the old times
Probably my fave new song, along with Age of Worry. So much to look forward to from such a musical genius, the new album will be mind-blowing. We really appreciate the sneak previews John, many thanks.
amazing song.... the version from the tiger jam is electric and has a sick bluesy solo. i hope he bounces back and forth between acoustic and electric with some r&b and blues is there. oh, and if he snuck a cover of voodoo child int here that would be just fucking damn nice
I'm gonna guess that of the 6 or 7 songs that he's 'tested' out on people, only 4 will actually make the cut, or they'll be different than what we are hearing right now. They're all works in progress. This one will be on it, 'a face to call home' and 'shadow days' for sure. It'd be awesome he'd put like 14 or 15 on an album instead of just 10 or 11. More bang for the buck!
To be honest I'm feeling an album where John does whatever the shit he wants. Cause he's John Mayer. Who say's he can't make a Dylan-like album? If your a true fan, you'll like whatever he puts out, cause then you know it comes from his heart. Nothing compares in these times of music to the amount of soul he puts in his own music. God bless John Mayer
@strato1392 These songs won't sound like this on the album... keep in mind he's playing by himself on acoustic guitar. When they do the album arrangements he'll include a bass line, electric guitar, drums, keys, etc... and the whole song will take a new color/shape. Plus, I think a lot of his fans liked Continuum, but would like to see more of "Room for Squares" infused back into his music again.
I do not disagree that continuum is a fantastic album - its amazing. I also love JM's passion for the guitar driven blues stuff. BUT: I consider Continuum as an unique album that must not be followed by a sequel.
As a matter of fact I admire that John Mayer dare to give an attempt to master folk music, which, so far, I think he does great.
So therefore, as a real JM fan I just urge you to enjoy his musical development!
From what I can tell based on older Hotel Cafe shows, he uses these little intimate shows to gauge crowd reactions so he can fine-tune the songs. Look up his song "The Hurt," which ended up becoming the coda to "Friends, Lovers or Nothing."
"Something Like Olivia" and "It Takes A Fool" are most likely close to finished based on how melodic they are compared to the other songs from this show which are lyrically intricate but lack a solid melody. I trust John to work his magic on them.
Hmm...I kinda think he is making a new album. But I also feel like he's taking his time. I actually think him playing these songs live is kind of a teaser but I do think he's using this old school guitary John + a little of Bob Dylan for his influences on the next record. I think he's not gonna use most of these songs. I remember him saying once that he likes to play the songs live to test them out and see if they're keepers. Some of these might make the cut and I hope so! Can't waitttt! <JM
he said at the red rocks concert that was streamed a while ago, that he would take a break for a couple of seasons but return with new stuff! You can't just stop creating and playing for people as a musician, so my guess is this is all good fun for him, and a way to keep him going idea wise
@tpickin33 Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right Portable Heart Something Like Olivia Slow Dancing In a Burning Room Up From the Skies / It Takes A Fool A Break In the Clouds Age of Worry Show Me Something I Can Be Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey Who Says Stop This Train Born and Raised
To be honest I'm praying for another continuum style album...real guitar driven blues stuff! Don't know if I'm feeling all this Bob Dylan type stuff..
@strato1392 That's ridiculous! NO ONE can make "another Continuum." Not even John Mayer... so why should he try? Besides... this dude is CRRRAAAAAZY talented. I bet he could top that record. ;-)
@strato1392 I got a chance to see him and talk to him at Berklee a month ago and I asked him that exact question... Unfortunately he said he's not focusing on blues stuff but he did show examples of how he uses bluesy grooves in his songs.... But expect Bob Dylan stuff because he also said that he's learned to really appreciate Bob Dylan lol
@strato1392 i agree, these songs arent bad but are nowhere near as good as previous songs from the continuum album -slow dancing, stop this train, gravity and the others. i hope he has loads of songs like slow dancing i listen to that one over and over again
@strato1392 watch some of his videos from Tiger Jam... he does Olivia with the full band and does another new one called Queen of California... I think you'll like them...
@strato1392 keep in mind that the original version of heartbreak warfare was completely acoustic and we all know how that actually ended up. I'm with you though, I want him to show off his guitar skills more than he has on battle studies and all these folksy songs
@strato1392 We all Love Continuum man, but john has said before he will never make two albums exactly the same because he wants them to tell a different story. And I respect and admire that about him.
@pastyourhorizon I love all his work, also this new stuff, but as a "fan" I have every right to dislike anything he does if it doesn't hit my taste. What's fascinating about JM is that I never yet had to use my rights.
@strato1392 I actually enjoy this Dylan stuff a lot. I play the blues and of course i'm in love with the continuum style but i am also a very big fan of folk. I say he play's whatever he wants. Not saying I disagree with you, in fact i completely agree. It's just that as long as we don't have a battle studies repeat i don't care what he plays :)
@pinkfloyder111 Kind of going off of what you said, I completely agree. About Battle Studies, I don't feel that it was inherently a BAD album. We're, as JM fans, so used to his unique, bluesy, acoustic masterpieces of past, and when you release Battle Studies, which is almost a stock pop album, you disappoint many. Granted, a song like Edge of Desire can carry that album, but it still isn't up to the standard of normal JM, where EVERY song carries the album. I'm looking forward to this album.

i doubt hes working on the new record...other than his everyday guitar playing and what not..you can tell mayer is kinda exhausted from a media stand point and what not...hes probably gonna kick back for a good while..and just tease us with songs like these that well never be on albums..which is just fine with me otherwise many of us well become disappointed as we well compare the studio tracks with the unmatchable live trackings..a new album means alot of media/promotion, which i doubt he wants
I thinking about what he said in the MSM interview. Where he sooner or later will feel the need to play something that wont be commercially successful. I think this is it.
