hi, i have a question and i hope you can answer it, i got a new helicopter with a tail rotor, when i turn on the helicopter and start to give it power to lift off, the helicopter starts to spin out of control, am i doing something wrong?
Dave,I crashed my BlueRay! I broke one of the stock servos, Will those little blue servos work better, because i have 5 of those sitting around doing nothing!
hi. I enjoy every video you post on youtube and I would like you to recommend me which simulator to buy.... I am a begginer. and I need to start flying in a sim.....thaks a lot.....
personally I think exceed should have sent you a new copter since it was there flaw and not pilot error...But i guess it does'nt work that way...great repair job... As long as it can still handle the abuse of crazy 3 d flying your're good to go..
progamerIII - You have no idea who dave is. This guy has been flying R/C helos since before they were mainstream. He has forgotten more about flying anything R/C than most will ever know. So dont start casting judgment till you know.
Talk about be resourceful, I find I rob and pinch parts parts from anything that will do the job.
But bending the main shaft back without taking it off, I have never seen that... I always straighten mine out by placing them into a drill and I have a piece of wood outside with a hole the size of the main shaft and the size of the flybar and I simply push it into the hole while leaning on it till it becomes straight, works well on non hardened shafts and flybars. I will try just bending it next.
Hey Dave! Since it's around Christmas time, of course I want an rc plane. Would you recommend the new Hobbyzone Super Cub LP? I am pretty new to flying
Ha, when it comes to fixing we think a like. I decided 5 minute JB weld works best on the blades. I was making a video to show how I built my test /training stand and the paddle flew off my fly bar and I looked and looked all afternoon before I gave up, a week later I was cleaning my stove and found it under the stove top. Lol :))))
incredible repair job...i would probably have replaced all the parts with the expensive original ones...not to mention the delivery time for spares to arrive. Im amazed you didnt get bad vibration with the hand-straightened shafts.
Thanks. Well it takes some patience to get them bent back close as possible, These weren't bent very far. It only takes a slight bit of pressure to bend even a new shaft. Believe me, in 40 years of helis, this slight bending is not a problem, nor is tape to balance. Thanks again for your comments.
that test stand is a fantastic idea bravo I like that it allows you to trim no just the rudder as you would with the lazy Susan turn table type stands but also the cyclic functions. very good idea im gona to try to make one myself.
Thanks kindly. Yep it works really well for me. Check out my videos on it. There are 2, and the parts and building instructions are in the description box.
couldn't agree more!! so brilliant and simplistic I'm kicking myself for not coming up with that idea... searching for those building vids now!!! U just dusted off my Heli!!!!!
Your welcome It is difficult, especially when a video runs a while and the message become overwhelming....but I try. I want people to learn and not be afraid of RC helicopters. Respect them but not be afraid.
Haha. Thanks kindly. You know, those shafts arent brittle, so just bend. I once got a new Honeybee in the box and the shaft was bent on that. It takes surprising little pressure to bend a new one, or to bend it back. It just takes a lot of patience to get it just right. Bummer to hear about the flu. It sure is troublesome this year. Thanks. Take your time and get well. Dave
Hi and welcome. I use the lightest cameras first off, like the 18Gram one shown on the tail rotor in the thumbnail of this video. I use Velcro, as it is the most versatile, yet strong enough to do a good job at reasonable speeds. So try that. Try to mount the camera, so you can see the heli or plane and the ground. Good luck.
Nice job, Dave. I just picked up some Amazing Goop the other day when we were in CA. Hopefully I won't need to use it anytime soon, haha! I noticed another bike in the garage. Did you get a new one? BTW, we are currently in Lansing, MI. Still, it's colder where you are, LOL! "Live long and Prosper." :-)
Thanks Scott, Good on the goop. Next time your fan belt breaks........
Yes, for almost nothing, I picked up an 82 750 Honda Nighthawk for my wife. It wasn't running, so I did some of my "repair work" and got it going like this helicopter. She may be 65, but she can really ride that thing. Now in 6 months, we hope to get both bikes out again when the snow thaws. Thanks for the kind words, and you ll&p.
great to see the Blue Ray fly again ! Love the sound of this birdie, well done Dave. The weather is crappy in Belgium, a lot of rain lately, then cold, then again rain...fingers crossed for some nice and calm sunny days.
We repaired Carbon fibre blades temporarily in Nam with a kind of duct tape to get the helis out of the hole. We did anything we could, and I guess it carried over to me today. This blade was just a chip, no spar damage, so no problem anyway.
Dave your one thorough dude great vid as usual i couldn't tear myself away *******again if i learn anything from your vids it is take your time and make sure its rite while its on the ground lol
I appreciate your loyalty sir. Thank you and good advise. Yep just another thing in the lessons of flying. Now I will have to make sure to look at the flybar paddles and the 2 grub screws that hold the flybar in. Thanks.
Really MarshFacev2... I am not the mechanical type. If there is something like this out there, I would really be interested in buying it. I am lucky that I am able to figure out how to comepletely dissassemble my helis and put them back together again. If you don't have the thing right in front of you, how can you put one together? That is how I learn... watching something live (In front of me) and then applying that to my own repairs. I just learn differently I guess.
No problem... it is the truth of course. I am amazed that I can totally strip down my own Blade CX2 and fix my mSR. Nobody but the guy at the hobby shop and I have ever fixed it. I just was interested in seeing if the heli "stand" was sold. I guess I could make my own from Mr. Herbert's Science Class, lol!
Watch my 2 videos on the stand. You will see how to make your own by looking at mine. If you can take a heli apart and put it back together, you can certainly do this, as there are only 2 moving parts. LOL. Go for it.
Just FYI, whenever you balance main blades with anything (be it tape, etc), you need to make sure the additional weight you add is added as close to the inside of the blade as possible.
Adding anything affects the airfoil design, and by adding weight to the inside of the blade, you are adding it to the "slower" section of the blade, so the effects won't be noticed as much.
Static balance means both blades are the same wt, but when they spin, (tape) on the inside is so negligible, that youd have to add a lot more tape, than the 1 in. piece I added. I move it in & out to balance when spinning, but in this case it spun perfectly the 1st time. If you saw what we were inventing and flying 40 years ago, you would see that the "tape" is the least concern. Tape does not noticeably change the airfoil. It's same shape as the wing blade so same airfoil.Tracking fixes.
wow, that's kind of ironic how the fly bar failed. do you know why it did what it did? anyway, good job on the repairs and i look forward to the next video, nice video as usual.
Those flybar paddle really spins at 3d speed, so I assume it simply flew off, and the tremendous force caused the 2 grub screws that hold the flybar in place to simply slip. Now I got another preflight Item to look at before flying. The best thing about crashing, as at least when you put it back together, you know it is right. Thanks for the kind words.
Hey Mr. Herbert, long time viewer first time commenter. I got kind of a personal question for you. After all these years in the hobby if you had to guess, how much money do you think you have invested over the years
I have spent a lot of money on the hobby in the last 53 years, for sure, but really never could afford it. I plugged along and like in this video, I fix a lot of things I break on my own, especially since parts are nil around here. I also try not to do stupid things anymore that causes crashes. Most of my helicopters, even old ones still fly because of it.
Fly when there is no wind. And fly high to give yourself plenty of time to recover when you lose control. Line the plane up for landing high up and then focus on bringing her straight in nice slow and level. Don't turn with low power for landing near the ground, you'll tip stall.
Fabulous plane. Make sure an instructor test flies it and trims it for you, and stands by to land it for you. That one tip will save you lots of time and money over the years, and in that one lesson, you will learn the most.
No you aren't. Bent (yes still) main shaft causes this. Main gears' turning plane changed and than it loses the gear mesh relation with pinion gear. Thats the source of that sound.
Besides significantly blade tracking is needed.
I highly recommend not to try to repair blades. Otherwise you can (or can't) see a part of blade flying through to you in addition flybar and paddle whether it is logical or not.
Thanks. I have repaired blades, tweaked, bent, and made things for my helis for over 40 years, (real ones and models too) the tape is negligible. Putting tape on the inside requires more tape than the outside to balance. It also makes a nice stripe to see in the air. It does not affect the airflow on this one and as you can see, it is flying smooth as silk, making it hard to argue with success.
I just moved here 3 years ago from California and started putting all my modeling stuff in here. This is my garage and shop, plus it's where I can escape, to get out of the house. LOL. Thanks for your comments.
Great video .......as usual.......I learn alot from you.........could you send me your nine heil tips and test stand construction stuff.................thanks......
Haha. Take a look at the right side of the video and click on "more from Nightflyyer." You will see a list (344) of all the videos I have produced in order, newest to oldest.
With your test stand, can you attach some scales to see what lift the helicopters have? Oh, BTW, what happened to the high def video camera? 5 stars all the same!!!
Thanks. I might be able to hook up a scale. Something to think about. I took all this with HD, but it takes about 2 hours for YT to process it. See the notice above the video? When it is done processing, it will be clear.
@NightFlyyer When I upload a new video, I mark it as "private" at first. This keeps it out of site from everyone but myself. When YouTube has completed all HD processing, then I mark the video as "public". This way, nobody sees the temporary low resolution video.
Good tip Videoguy837, I've recently gotten an HD cam. The low res didn't cross my mind with the process time, so I've made myself look like a real twat! Lmao ;o)

That is good advice. Thank you kindly.,

Good tip Videoguy837, I've recently gotten an HD cam. The low res didn't cross my mind with the process time, so I've made myself look like a real twat! Lmao ;o)
