This commercial was produced by Alexander Film Company of Colorado Springs, and marks the peak of their fame and innovations. Both the car and the model were placed there by helicopter, which was then used to shoot the spot and remove them. This commercial is detailed on Gazette . com, just search the site for Alexander Film.
I found out from another video here on YT that the actor sitting in the car later sued AFC when she became stranded up there with the car during a gale force wind. It was apparently quite a few hours before they could get her down and she was alone, without communications, and terrified.
But at least she had played her part in automotive history!
@slk320k I believe that this IS that commercial. 120 M.P.H. winds picked up terrifying her for 2 HOURS before they could get her back down. She had no place to hide but the inside of the car.
Besides the woman not being Dinah Shore the location is not Monument Valley. The car is on Castle Rock (also known as Castleton Tower) in the Castle Valley area of Utah (outside of Moab). I know because it is the view from the front our house (not a bad view!)
@r2wolcott i just got back from navjoland and we went to monument valley & we were told that is was filmed there along with a bunch of other movies and such.
@shortshorty4456 Not to be disrespecful, but they are flat wrong. Castle Rock (Castleon Tower) area looks a great deal like the features in Monument Valley. That is problably where the confusion comes in. I know this area extremely well. I live within a mile of Castle Rock and it is out our front window. I can point out many of the other features in the commercial like Round Mountain, the Priest and Nuns and the Rectory, Mother Superior, etc.
The woman in the car is NOT Dinah Shore (she did her last Chevrolet commercial in 1961 or 1962). However, I'm sure curious as to how they got the car up there!
Chevrolet did a repeat of the ad in 1973 with the 1973 Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe. The car looks like you would see on "Bewitched" they sponsored Chevrolet Cars.
Did they leave the car there for posterity ?
If I was that woman sitting there, I would be shittin' myself !
