  • Get a new tshirt Lee! Haha great video mate.

  • is a wider grip more beneficial for wider lats?

  • @Garahan

Actually it's the opposite, a closer grip works more of the outer lats. A wider grip works more of the inner back. Try it in your own workouts and you see what I mean.

  • lol the opening music is used in other things too

  • thats exactly how i've been training lats the past year or so, and i've been doing over 100 pullups total everyworkout, and I don't see that much improvement. why is that? am i just flexing wrong?

  • @Samm1320

Do you have any videos of yourself, your back, or doing pull ups? It's hard to give advice when I can't even see what you are doing.

  • @leemhayward no i don't because i have a 4 year old phone, and it won't let me upload videos, but i'm getting a new phone, or a camera in a few months, and i can post some then if that works. thanks though

  • @Samm1320

THE SECRET TO BODY BUILDING...LODSA PPL DONT KNOW....youtube MIKE MENTZER HIT CHEST AND BACK.....GODBLESS !!

  • 2 great guys

  • So, basically, do pull ups, and in the end, hang from the pull up bar and stretch the lats and decompress the spine. Got it.

  • why u guys never linked up again?

  • @ddayfitness

Elliot lives in Florida and I live in Newfoundland. That's why.

  • With all due respect, Lee's advice on stretching the lats may not be a great idea. I am a huge fan of Lee Hayward, love his vids, love the way he presents the info he's awesome but do a search on what Charles Poliquin say's about static stretching and workout's. He recomends waiting 4-6 hours after your workout. By the way thanks Lee for all the info you share, I hope you don't mind me posting this.

  • in the old days don howorth did drop chins . they really give you a spread the clavicles are spread a part basically. Also one arm weighted chins really work for stretching the lats.

  • Awesome I'm new to the channel but love the info. Thanks

  • So pull ups for back ... That`s something new and interesting ...

  • Latspreting expert ... HAHAHAHA ...

  • lol.

  • Thanks for the great information ! ! !

  • To build wide and muscular lats, 3 simple exercises that are deadlift, bent-over-row and pullups.

  • Thanks again for the clip Lee, love watching them!

These Lats are a tough muscle to work out, because it's such a big muscle area I never feel I really work it, I do rows and lat-pulls, dbell rows, but always find it's my forearms (grip) that gives out long before my Lats feel they've been worked.

Is it normal for your Lats to not really feel as worked (the burn) as say biceps, triceps, thighs etc, or are there other exercises or techniues that could help?

    Cheers in advance.

  • @kpsuk

It's harder to get that mind muscle connection when training lats. But as they get more developed the easier it will be to feel your lats working. Really focusing on using a full stretch and full contraction with each rep will help you feel your lats more.

  • Hey Lee, what do you think of weighted pullups? Is it more important to get high reps or would 40% less reps w/ significantly more weight be beneficial?

  • @antoniorossiz

I would only add weight to your pull ups if you can perform multiple sets of 10+ reps with body weight. So if you get to the point where you can bang out say 5 sets of 10 reps with no problem. Then you should start adding weight to your pull ups.

  • @leemhayward Thanks for replying, Lee. I've been using this technique in my last two back workouts.

  • hey lee, if wanted to get wider lower lats, should i do bent over barbell row?

  • @gangkapak

Try doing reverse grip rowing (i.e. palms facing forward grip) and row the bar into your lower stomach. This will place the stress on the lower lats and help to thicken them up.

  • @leemhayward thanks bro, appreciate it

  • Hey Lee, last year at school we were doing fitness testing and I beat the pull up record and they put my name up on this board that says Mason Baer, 2010-2011, 30 pull-ups. The only reason that I was able to do so many was that I had trained a crazy amount for the 2 weeks notice we got before we did the testing. Now I'm doing 20-25 as my max with perfect form. But My question for you is how many sets and reps should I be doing to get up to doing 40-50 reps w/o swinging my body.

  • This is my first time seeing this vid, but amazingly enough, I do precisely what Lee advised clip, except for the long hang he mentioned ( I will have to try that). I have been doing this for about 1 1/2 - 2 years now, and my back/upper body has become snake-infested and powerful. It works.

  • lee and eliot are both great

  • When stretching your lats, do you want your shoulders down and back or do you let them go. I'm pretty crossed up (and I think I have tight lats too) so when I raise by arms over my head, my shoulders raise as well. Thanks a lot.

  • HI Lee,

Thanks for all your videos, I think they are one of the best . I want to ask you a question about creatine and I want a honest opinion( not that I think your not honest) but as you know it's always been a hot topic. do you think it's worth to spend money on creatine to help gain mass and strength? thanks

  • @Algerian32

Yes, I personally use creatine and I have a blog post all about creatine posted on my website LeeHayward*com just go there and search for "Creatine"

  • fuckin Elliot is hilarious lol!

  • lee hayward is a straight up G... tells the truth all the time and gives everyone time of day... no bullshit... alot of so called body builders will try and convince you they know more and you need info off them, but lee hayward gives good info for free.

  • @jodhan23 NO ,no no, lee hayward is full of shit. he has lied alot on some of his videos. He doesnt tell the truth, hes told a bunch of lies on certain stuff for muscle building. he is not a G

  • lee, you tha man!!

  • Lol! You Canadians are so funny.

    "Check it owt"

    Good info though

  • You can hear "Get Back" by ludacris in the background

  • you think do the dips the same way your doing with pull ups? doing 10 resp of dips in between the exercises on my chest/tri day.

  • LOl Elliot, Looks better leaner. and i tihnk its hysterical how fucking pumped and intense he is just by answering a question. Imagine having a regular conversation with him lol, i'd be like shit is he just excited or should i be worreid he's gonna squash me

  • @VisionimagifyTV

Assisted pull up machines can help, I actually include those as part of the "Progressive Pull Up Program" that I offer on my website.

  • Question: I currently do 3 sets of pull ups in my workout. About 10-12 reps with time under tension of about 3-4 seconds for every rep. I don't know if this is 100% true but I believe I'm getting a compound / tiredness effect by doing the 3 sets one after the other with about 1 minute rest in between.

Now If I switch to interspersing my pull ups throughout my workout like you suggest - will I lose the compound effect? Please could you talk more about advantages/disadvantages of both ways etc?

  • @DaveKarl

You'll be able to get more total pull ups done if you space them out during your workouts. I suggest you give it a try for the next month and see how it works. Rather than doing set after set of pull ups, space them out and shoot for a higher total of pull ups over the course of your workout.

  • are you gonna show us how to get these lats so i can come and knock you out for not showing me how to get lats on this video?

  • thats some good tips lee ill start adding that into my routine :)

  • How many fkin laptops have you got??? lol

  • @hiprobhop

3 laptops and 1 desktop... This is my business, gotta be equipped LOL

  • @leemhayward yh lol i bet u make millions of dollars on youtube eheh

  • what exercises can i do to help strengthen my lower back? its always getting injured when i deadlift or just play sport in general.

  • Hey Lee, I've got a question about Blast Your Bench. I don't know where to ask it so I thought that perhaps your most recent video would be a good place to do so.

Would the decline bench press be an okay substitution to the flat bench?

    Thanks

  • Hey LEE, How is your bicep?

  • @pbhenry

It's official, I've torn the short head of my left bicep. Unfortunately the doctors will not operate on it because it's not a full tear. So basically I just have to work around it and probably end up with a funny looking bicep. It sucks but shit happens... I'll just do my best to work around the injury and get back into training ASAP.

  • @leemhayward If you ask them to operate it, dont they have no choice? Im pretty sure that if you want them to, they will...I have partial tear in my meniscus and I they fixed it

  • @leemhayward if the tear makes your muscle look weird when it heals then maybe its time you started strongman training and powerlifting ? lol

  • thanks lee

  • My rep max for wide grip pull ups is about 5 lol

  • @cul10043601 Mine too stop laughing ;p

  • @thatstheguy07 I find it one of the hardest exercises to perform and look stupid attempting them in the gym. FML

  • @cul10043601 I feel thatwayabout deadlifts man. Im tall so its an awkward motion. I usually just dont do them because of this. Which I would strongly suggest not doing ;)

You sound like you just need to focus on slow moving form...get it down pat, then worry about how many you can do.

  • @thatstheguy07 I rarely do deadlifts aswell. I keep good form and keep it slow but its quite frustrating when you do this then can get to about 3 reps on your first set and feel like your already trying to squeeze the last few out lol

  • this guys a fuckin bro-han clown ass motherfucker

  • @leehayward Just to clarify but in the muscle model workout it shows a sample pyramiding set where the last 2 sets have a drop set of about 40%-50% of the weight. However, in the actual the workout it says use a drop set of 15%. Which one should I use ?

  • can a fat guy do pulls?? if he can't, what other work can he do with his lats if he can't do pull ups??

  • @BOSS20s There are lots of exercises you can do.... think about doing the negative portion of the pull up too... hop up and lower yourself down as slowly as possible.

Theres a good video on here from Smitty (Jim Smith) from the deisel crew on the progression of working up to apull up. He shows you a buncha good exercises for working your way up to being strong enough to do pull ups. Great video.

  • AWEEEESOOOMMMMEEEEEEE gonna get ma wings now!

  • funny video, make more of them

  • Why so agressive XD???

  • elliots channel is strengthcamp

  • elliots jealousssssssss

  • lee said fuck heheheeeheheehe

  • Sound advice, Lee.

  • hows the left bie

  • @Skyoneer2007

It doesn't hurt, but I'm going to get it checked out by my doctor when I get back home to Canada.

  • umm... when you hold yourself up to stretch the lats, which grip would you say is the best? i was thinking a wide overhand one, am i right?

  • @MichaelMacAdam

You can vary your grips with stretching as well. I'll usually grab the bar wide until my grip gives out. Grab it close, underhand, parallel, etc. Just take a few minutes and go through a bunch of different grips. It's an awesome forearm exercise as well as a stretching exercise.

  • hey lee, hows your bicep doing?

  • Hey lee my good man, around 2:54 were your explaining about hanging from the bar do u meen hang in a relaxed mannor or hang sort of tensed as if you get what im saying?

  • @yeeaaabuddy

Just grab the bar and let yourself hang relaxed. This will stretch out your lats, arms, chest, etc.

  • @leemhayward ey thank you my man appreciated, i will try it tomorow! its legs today :)

  • Once I was subscribed to Elliott Hulse's channel, then I noticed I wasn't able to stand him anymore and decided to cancel my subscription; so wtf now I've to see him on Lee's videos?'? No way, I'm outta here.

  • Link to elliot's chanel please?

  • weighted pullups and genetics, end of story.

  • Is your muscle specialization course gonna be a series of free youtube videos?

  • @christurkthebrave

It's going to be a downloadable PDF program.

  • lookin forward to the new vids :)

  • Thanks for the edit at the end re. bone structure. I was gonna say.... =P

  • Yo! Lee... anything goes on Yo Elliott... stretch the fucking bones! keep getting jacked man, we make shit up and it all works... type 3 muscle fibers, stretching bones, whatever, as long as we help skinny bastards get big and lean... keep up the great work boss!!!

  • @strengthcamp

LOL I just thought of my next program... "Blast Your Bones" and help the skinny bastards get big ahahaha... :-)

  • lmao he said he looks like a flying squirl

  • Hey lee, I heard that vertical pulls give you more width, while rows make your back thicker. Is this true?

  • @batistaownssmackdown

To a degree yes, but both moves can help with width and thickness.

  • what if you cant do pull ups...

  • @TrizzleProduction You can do lat pull downs, use the assisted pull-up machine or do negatives which is where you jump yourself up and slowly let yourself down.

  • @TrizzleProduction

Bodyweight Rows are another killer option.

Do a search for "Bodyweight Rows - Back Exercises Without Weights" and you'll see my video on this exercise.

  • @TrizzleProduction Lat pull down is great!

  • "Lat Spreading Expert" put that on your resumé

  • No way! Last night, I'm thinking 'man my lats need spread wider', awesome cheers lee 'fuck!'

  • Hey Lee, awesome video, never thought about doing pull ups between every exercise, but I have a question: Can you always use this method? Meaning if I were to use that technique forever, would I eventually plateau? Or would this method always work?

  • @aodan19 You will always plateau no matter what exercise is routine you are doing. However, there are many ways you can defeat a plateau, which you can do until you reach your genetic potential. I'm sure lee would have many tips for beating plateaus.

  • @aodan19

I've been doing this style of pull ups for a couple years or more. Not like I do them every single back workout mind you, but it's something that I keep coming back to on a regular basis. Just do it. Don't worry about when it's going to stop working before you even start.

  • @leemhayward Thanks a lot, that's a very good point. Hope your arm gets better!

  • Anyone got advice on upper traps? I'm 5'7" and 144lbs. Want to grow upper traps but not sure how often to work them. I tried once a week but they not growing. I need them to get bigger, but not want to get too big since I'm kinda short and might look weird...

  • @jgq85 Hey man, first of all, you need to put on some weight via compound exercises because you're still pretty small. And you don't just want huge traps that aren't in proportion to the rest of your body. So don't just concentrate on traps alone. But something I see a lot of people not doing, are wide grip barbell shrugs or cable shrugs. Having your arms wide when shrugging really gets at those traps rather than the standard straight down vertical shrugs most people are doing. Hope that helped!

  • Ha first video he says fuck hahahaha lol

  • @M3XX3

Search for "Push up challenge" and you will hear a "Holy fu**"

  • Lee you cant actually stretch your bones......

    ;) ha

  • wow worlds collide

  • You do your pullups in between each exercises or in between each sets? So if it is in between each exercises; for example, on a back day where you do 5 exercises, you will you do 5 sets of pullups for 5-10reps + the set for stretching in total??

  • @Paparmane

Yes, I'd start with a set of pull ups and do a set in between each exercise. I personally strive for 50 pull ups over my workout. But it's all relative to your individual strength levels. Some people may do less, some people may do more. The key is multiple sets of pull ups spaced out over your back workout.

  • I'm learning alot about your work out strategies , but I can't help but wonder what your diet is like (i.e. do you eat the typical oatmeal/chicken/etc and when you eat). Just throwing that idea out there.

  • @t66wood

I have a complete Bodybuilding Nutrition Made Simple e-Report that covers diet right on my main website LeeHayward*com just enter your e-mail address in the opt-in form and I'll send it to you ASAP.

  • lee said fuck haha

  • hahaha

  • Thats great ! A flying squirrel!

  • Elliott & Lee...nice!

  • elliott moose

  • i didn't know lee was from canada...

  • I do pullups with 45lbs on me and different variations so on and so fourth, but when you said grab the bar and just hold on and stretch them, do you mean do that at the very end of your workout? thanks in advance

  • @FreshPhotogNJ yea at the end

  • @FreshPhotogNJ yeah he said stretch them at the end of your work out to increase your back flexibility

  • Lol You said fuck.. haha

  • "FUCK!!!"

    haha ;)

  • second

  • I would say first but im not gunna be that guy

  • @NICKxxMAFIA YOUR that guy.

  • @NICKxxMAFIA Technically you kinda just were lol
