  • my mom sings this every time she drives me to school and the sun is really bright . It's not bad.

  • I grew up in Austin and I remember running into this couple (Timbuk 3) where I was working on the way to Lake Travis. I asked them who this song was about. They replied it was about University of Texas students. At that time, you could drive down "the Drag" and see UT students wearing Wayfarer sunglasses almost exclusively, hence the Wayfarers in the video.

  • Love the '80s ipod dude carries into the trailer. What I wouldn't have given for one of those back then! :-D

  • that creepy ass face with the moving lips bothers me.

  • pobre burro

  • LOL I'm sorry guys but there's a reason these guys weren't around very long. I do remember watching this on MTV when I was like 6 though. :

  • Did you give the donkey any shades, Timbuk 3? No, no you didn't. That's because your bright future doesn't include kindness to pack animals. For shame.

  • no donkeys were hurt in the filming of this video!

  • haha so clever

  • i had to do a video of this song in 9th grade

  • didnt some rapper steal this title and put it in a song?

  • I bought the album. Glad to see it here!!

  • I really like this. I think it was Brad turned me on to this on Facebook. I love it! I told Craig it kind of reminds me of some of the music by Dire Straits! Love that harp! : )

Aunt Pinky (formerly known as KansasLimuLady on Twitter!)

  • Love the tune! .At first I thought my eyes were getting worse instead of better! Not too bright, just a little blurry! I love it. And, I love that name--Timbuk3! : )

  • wasn't this song in My Best Friend Is A Vampire? that was one of my favorite movies.

  • hahahahaha.... Only one or two? Have you checked out the number of views?! :)

    Thanks for posting!

  • @dawndbengel Sure, but I put it up a LONG time ago, back in 2006, before YouTube became ubiquitous. Fortunately, EMI is behaving in a non-stupid manner with regards to copyright and has not deleted the video.

  • @postingoldtapes Either way, 200k is way more than I could hope to get on mine. Songs not bad at all by the way.

  • 1986

  • awsome song. Keep the 80's coming

  • Thanks for sharing!! 50 thou a year will buy a lot of beer!! LOL!!! Today??? LOL!!

  • Timbuc 3

  • This is one of the most glorious videos of the 80s. This song is good forever.

  • this is a weird video

  • This is quite possibly the whitest song ever made.

"This song is so white, I gotta wear shades"

  • @iliekchocolatemilk this song is about nuclear war not white folk

  • This is very cute, I love it .... Why is it sick? What issues do you have with this video? Oh well ... different strokes for different folks .... good song too.

  • Poor donkey... He walks like he was beaten for this. :(

  • @religiousfood I take it you've never been around donkeys. They are always like that. (See also: Pooh, Winnie the)

  • awesome lol thanks for uploading

  • Lol, you have to love the Commodore Amiga animation and art work :)

  • @potsy5656 To be fair, their was a LOT better work done on the Amiga after this video.

  • Meh, maybe so. I think the cruedly drawn Amiga work makes the video :P

  • Thanks for putting this up. It's sick.

  • Oh the irony...

  • the boom box was the 80's equivalent to the IPOD.

    we are doomed

  • Its really about the little shits up and coming that got paid stupid amounts of money to do bullshit office work! Compared to everyone else !

  • The thing that not everybody about is what this song is about. The future so bright is about nuclear war in the future.

  • lol yea a bunch of high schools and universities used the song for their graduations

  • lol i was looking for this forever using Kuffs (the movie kirstian slater 1992) as a key word and could never find it thanx for the blast from the past

  • OK, I'll add the name of the movie as a keyword. Thanks fot the suggestion.

  • thanks i was looking for this song!

  • yeah, right pvelectric.

This song fit the times (mid 1980's) PERFECTLY. There's a reason it went to the top of the charts regardless of your pseudo-intellectual sham-critique.

  • i just landed here randomly somehow, like i dont even know how i got here, but im loving it kinda

  • I'm related to the guy. He's my dad's distant cousin.

  • 5 stars! :D good stuff

  • lol cracked gave this vid a huge jump in views.

  • Cracked gives everything a huge jump.

  • Classic!

  • lol i was going threw my dads old music i found this song i was like sweet! lol

ya prolly not normal for a 16 yr old to like 80s music but i love the older stuff, ace of base, ACDC lol im a little odd i know but thanks for uploading this.

  • thats not realy odd in anyway....

  • lol Im 16 and like this too. I don't like much 80s except for some of the weird 1 hit wonders.

  • Well thx ! I thought I was the only one

  • lol, You aren't odd I like 80's music too.....poison, def leppard, believe you are not odd...!

  • Yeah man 80s music was the best

  • you got that right...!

  • wasn't this on a vampire movie, or something....from the 80s?!?!?! can't remember the name.....

  • "My Best Friend Is A Vampire", starring Dr. Wilson from House.lol

  • it was werewolf with chuck conners

  • Ahhh... I am one of those people who has thought of this video a lot. I love this song and vid. Thanks for posting it!

  • I didn't realize these guy were so wasted making this video. I mean this looks like something made while intoxicated-- concept to final.

  • Who is the babe in this video , i think i'm in love !

  • Always think of Christian Slater whenever i hear this song from the movie "Kuffs" :-)

  • FUCKING GREAT MOVIE!! KUFFS!

  • Shit thanx me too!

  • Thanks for posting was just thinking of this song today....wow the great 80's

  • I live in Oak Ridge...tell me about needing shades? The High School is full of potential scientists and a BRIGHT future....we glow in the dark. LOL

  • Oak Ridge Military Academy?

    Alumni Me, Class o' 1991

  • thanks for posting this vid man i love this song in MY BEST FRIEND IS A VAMPIRE

looks like more people then you expected searched this vid! ha

  • TOTALLY AWESOME!

  • They used the most advanced computer grpahics at the time lol!

  • Shockingly, you're not that far off. At the time, color cycling was available only on the $250,000 Quantel Paintbox...and the $2000 Amiga 1000. The flat-shaded 3D animation featured in "Money for Nothing" was pretty advanced.

  • Hurrah for Amiga!

  • exactly. I have to say, that's awesome looking.

  • VH1 !!

    one1 hit Wounder~

  • i remember in the 90's when i was about 12, i was learning about the 80's through movies like "my best friend is a vampire." this song played in that awesome movie, and it sounded so cool. I became an 80's freak afterward..

I'm 25 now; I'm not from the 80's, but I still grew up with these, and this one is my top 3 favorite, easy. Of course I played it before graduating last year, but the economy is crap now, so my future? not so bright right now, which is fitting for the song's actual meaning!

  • Haha!

Your post gave me a hearty laugh.

I was a 90s kid, but after I saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off, I had to find some music in the 80s I like.

    This is on that list.

  • Search it at SHOPTIONS(dot)NET

    searchword: Timbuk3

  • "...produced this video themselves. You can tell, can't you?" And yet, it works. Pat McDonald was from Green Bay. Years later as a DJ in Chicago I played this repeatedly, never putting him together till a friend said, "You remember him from school, right?" Uh, no? But it's a fine song -- timeless really. Love the snippet "I'm heavenly blessed and worldly wise." That's just plain good. GB's other famous contribution to pop culture: Monk aka Tony Shaloub. Same era, but the other side of town.

  • Awesome song....Also what the song is about is interesting. The Future So Bright. Is talking about Nuclear War in the near future.

  • ...dream a little dream...

  • i loved this song at the end of an Extremly Goofy!

  • thanks for posting this cool old vid bro. i remember watching it on mtv back in the day!

  • 0:43 reminds me of when I win solitaire.

  • im not even from the 80's but i love this song

  • A truly righteous tune. Outstanding.

  • Don't suppose you managed to get the video for "Too much sex, not enough affection"? It was used on the DOA movie soundtrack and I think it's from the Reverend Jack album.

  • Sorry, this is the only video I have by them.

  • cool

  • I heard this song at the mall... loved it!

  • Thanks for uploading this

  • agree!!!!! this song rocks, makes my day i tell ya what

  • The future's so bright I gotta put a TV on a Donkey.

  • " Fifty thou a year'll buy a lot of beer..." Amen to that!

  • sweet, makes you feel alright ya know

  • Can you post facts about cats? It's on the same album as this...Please???

  • This ia a classic example of a great 80's song and the band/group not knowing what the hell to do with the video. Total mismatch. I could make a video a hell of a lot better. Lot of this you could do with the lyrics......they wasted film.

  • Chill. This video was made with NO budget a long time before the tools were cheap and available. They did the graphics on an Amiga 1000 that cost $599 when the only other choice was a Quantel Paintbox that cost $150,000.

  • lol, rignt now in mah school our 8B slogan is "Our future is so bright we gotta wear shades". We had to make sunglasses and decorate them and put goals on them. It was retarted, but the idea from the song got a thumbs up

  • ...You realize when the say "the future's so bright," they're referring to the flash of an atomic bomb detonating, don't you?

  • why do/would u think that?

  • Comment removed

  • It's an ironic song, In an interview with Pat and Barbara about the song, Pat was hanging around a university physics department and heard one of the students say "the future's so bright, I gotta wear shades." He was struck by the statement because this student wasn't able to disconnect the reality of his research ... he was apparently in line to work on nuclear weapons. Pat was struck the by IRONY of the statement, and thus recorded this ... i.e. the future can't be bright with nukes.

  • oh, NOW i get it. Future gonna suck if u get blown to less-than-ash in a nuke

    =D i feel smart!

  • i HAVE THE SHIRT THAT SAID

    MY FUTURE IS SO BRIGHT

    (PICTURE OF A SHUTTER SHADE)

    I NEED SHADES

    IT'S COOL

  • You know what's really funny? I was at a Los Angeles Star Trek convention in 1990, and as the staff were about to introduce Levar Burton, they showed their own music video of this song, with Geordi LaForge always putting on his "shades" (visor). It was so awesome!

  • The Amiga was an awesome machine for its time.

  • this song is sweet!!!

  • cool thx i have never seen the vid of it :D

  • I remembered this song back when I was 5 years old.

  • this is one of those incomprehensible 80's songs that I will sing forever!

  • tommy boy!

  • Always picks me up. :D

  • certainly different, came from cracked.

  • anyone remember this song in tommy boy lol awesome song.

  • this song drove me.... a had it shit in the 80's no prospects or jack shit.....a heard this song an it gave me hope for the 90's...it 2008 an av done good....cheers

  • Not bad harp

  • I herd someone humming this song the other day... wow....

  • a really goofy movie haha

  • where's beavis & butthead to critique this! :p

  • 50K a year isn't so much nowadays...

  • back then it was like making a 6 figure income.

  • OMG! I danced to this like 5 years ago in Jazz class. I've been looking for this everywhere! Thanks. [:

  • You can say a one hit wonder...but pat mAcdonald is truly one of the great lyricists alive today...and still producing some fantastic stuff. If you look for it, you will be rewarded!

  • I have "the future's so bright, I gotta wear shades" on a T shirt I bought at university. Just found it today at the back of a cupboard. Decided to look up this song. Ah good times....

  • lol my mom said she used 2 hate this song

  • Wow, I just found out today that this song is actually predicting nuclear holocaust at the end of the 80s! (check wikipedia for details from the author) Like most 80s kids, I thought it was positive about the future. Crazy! It seems really obvious now, watching the video.

  • Same, ha ha ha.

  • o one of those 1 hit wonder bands

  • I bought all Timbuk 3 records up to the last in 95...one hot wonder or not...GREAT BAND..GREAT MUSIC...every album. Much better than lots of the crap out there, popular or not.

  • yes!!... we are happy...

thank u so much postingoldtapes!!.. :)

  • Hey Mazzarge, I think that little donkey needs some shades.

  • This song reached #19 in the fall of 1986.

    top40db

  • Another cool song played on MTV, when it actually played videos.

  • WTF? Relax, dude. It was the corporate white guys who decided to change MTV's format. We all miss the old days, but that's no reason to be uncivil.

  • No Shit! Once upon a time MTV really was a force, often Music was on them first before hitting "local" radio. They have turned into something that is so bad, so worthless, I won't even comment. I'm just trying to figure out why they even exist anymore...

  • This song SO applies to my moodset right now.

  • MTV has totally lost what it was all about in the begining. More videos and less crap would be great.

  • This song is awesome! So catchy....

  • Without the girl singing it sounds like a Huey Lewis song

  • my future is so bright io gotta wear shades baby! Future air force weapons designer and country singer here (i hope lol, my dad told me i should look this up cause im smart)

  • you do realize that if your dad told you about this then you may not exactly be headed into a musical career....

everyone should already know about this

  • Does anyone have the video from DOA of "Too Much Sex, Not Enough Affection"? It was taped in the Continental Club.

Damn, I miss when MTV actually played videos

  • agreed to that! why cant they just make a CTV(crap television) and then give us back the GOOD music for MTV, not rap and hiphop please!

  • Without the woman singing it kind of reminds me of ZZ Top.

  • Ah this was used in an original episode of 21 Jump Street (before the dvds replaced the music :-S) it was used in the episode " My future's so bright I gotta wear shades" LOL. Nice upload.

  • aghh that nerd dude gave me nightmares lol

  • LOVE tthis song! good call

  • it really sucks that this song wasn't on the dream a little dream soundtrack! this song is so awesome and i just love to rock out to it! lol.

  • yeah it sucks lol i feel old im only 16 but drea, a little dream is still one of my fav movies

  • Barb and Pat ROCK!

  • This was in that Christian Slater Movie Kuffs

  • It was also in, "My Best Friend is a Vampire."

  • wierd al could have parodied this song so well

  • I believe he did one of his "style parodies", where rather than doing new lyrics to a song, he creates a new song in the artist's style. Like "Dare To Be Stupid" being Devo, or "Virus Alert" being Sparks.

  • What other movie soundtrack was this from besides, My Best Friend Is A Vampire?

  • Hello. I believe it as in the movie Kuffs with Christian Slater. He and Milla Jovovich dance to it at the begining of the movie. Absolutely love this song! :)

  • Aha! So it was =) Thanks for that. I too dig this little ditty. I think I might learn to play it

  • Does anyone remember the movie "My Best Friends a Vampire" with the dude from House M.D. the tv series?

  • thanks for posting

  • I remember this tune! :) When it came out it was a fun hip little tune. :) 80s rocked!!! =)

  • This was used in a vampire movie that I can't remember the name of.

  • It's called my best friendi's a vampire

  • great ass!

  • I wanna give sex to said donkey.

  • Why would that donkey have a TV on its back? Where does one find electricity in the middle of the desert? What are these people, on DOPE???

  • Solar panels. As Joe Bob Briggs said, I'm surprised I have to explain these things.

  • You just don't get music vids do you......

  • the video is really coo. was wathcing greatest 1 hit wonders and it said this song was about nuclear holocaust

  • wow...that sucked

  • haha...hallmark uses this song in one of its music cards for grads

  • Love the song. Don't like it? Go stuff it!

    Awesome song. Very 80s
