  • Wanted to see these guys play - not shitty 1985 graphics.

  • I bought this POS and the video is absolutely intolerable. I hope the shmuck fresh out of high school a/v class who worked on this never worked again. Audio is fabulous though. :D

  • Wanted to write something about how cool the first part sounded, but was too distracted by cooler sounds that followed. Yeah, this is so insane. I wish I could see them live.

  • PALMER!!!

  • It's not a theramin, it's a ribbon controller. Similiar sounds can emerge, but a completely different mechanism.

  • I bet that someone must have the original footage that was used to make this. Wouldn't that be a sensation?

  • Very good!

  • crazy!!!

  • Keith is so good he wipes his ass with a synthesizer

  • keith is the master keyboardist, nobody will ever take that away, the same as carl palmer hes the greatest drummer of all time

  • The music on the album is better than in the movie, but still AMAZING!!!

  • 1:27-1:52 Aw shit son what're you doing!?

  • Comment removed

  • @GoblinGirl You don't just want a great video with ELP playing their awesome music, you also want some 70's effects to make it go with the music, and it would be more exciting.

  • Ohh santo cielo esto es un enorme orgasmo auditivo

  • touches the soul

  • kill me someone, please

  • this is great just watched these on sky arts now working my way through thanks everyone

  • Ah, this is sooo good :) love you guys

  • god damn!

  • Palmer is brilliant. Cheeky fucker! :0)

  • Very good!

  • emerson is the one true god. rudess was created by him.

  • emerson os the one true god. rudess was created by him.

  • I would love to get this on dvd, let me know more about it and i will serach online for it.

  • @apleasantsymmetry go buy "pictures at an exhibition" by emerson, lake and palmer, pull up a chair, turn up the volume and ENJOY!

  • @apleasantsymmetry this is from the Pictures at an Exhibition DVD which should be available... it's the Pictures bit from the complete show which was a film called Rock 'n Roll Your Eyes, not sure if that one is available

  • rudess is gay, lord is awesome and this video too!

OMFG don't ever try to shoot 10 mg 4-ho-met hahahhahahahhahah

  • rudess is gay, lord is awesome and this video too!

  • 1:37 Cute butt!

  • Királyság! THUMBS UP!!!!!!!!!! XD

  • AMAZING songs of my teen age days

  • ah when self indulgence was a good laugh and could be backed up by some serious blues playing.

  • i still love the original

    EMERSON LAKE& PALMER!!

  • The beginning is like watching Nigel Tufnel with a keyboard lol!

  • I read in ELP's book that Keith used to put an explosive charge in his Moog ribbon controller and it would go off while he was doing his thing like in this video. Once, he got his hand too close to the explosion and it blew his thumbnail off and there was blood everywhere. So a roadie got a bucket of water and Keith put his hand in there after every song. But he finished the show!

  • faaaaaaaaa te fumas algo raro y te pones a ver esto o_o

  • Just a terrific jam by three of the most talented rock musicians ever to grace the planet!

  • I can imagine the troubadour that was on the original picture of the old Castle headbanging to this.

  • It's great to a musician take an alternative instrument and make it speak the way Emerson does. Les Claypool does it with the "Whamola"

  • i wish jimi didn't die HELP (hendrix, emerson, lake and plamer) would've been awesome to see

  • all the visual effects are shit.

    Music, extraordinary.

  • I am old enough that I saw this movie when it was a midnight show in Westwood, California. 1973-ish. The color effects didn't look any better when we were stoned. Just a pain in the ass when all we wanted to do was watch the boys rock out.

  • Holy Mother, it sounds so... weird without Eddy Offord's great work as a sound Engineer. No wonder ELP decicated a song to him.

  • what on earth was that instrement

  • @MrTomsanders Well, I don't know which instrument you mean. You probably mean Greg's E-bass. Or Carl's Drumset. But I think you want to know the instrument that Keith plays at the very beginning. It's a portable rubber, which makes sounds by getting touched. This belongs to Keith's Moog-Synthesizer.

  • @MrTomsanders a theramin

  • progresszív rock a javából!-azért hallgassátok meg a stúdió albumot is.....király! :D

  • Great ELP moment... but unfortunately we cannot see the real stuff properly with all these unnecessary effects. Thanks anyway for posting, buddy :)

  • 'Sti mostri.

  • fantastica!!

  • In the late 70s, they packaged this concert footage and called it "Rock and Roll Your Eyes." I remember seeing it at a late night theatre showing. I remember it because of all the psychedelic graphics. Haven't seen this for over thirty years - wow...

  • ma che dici non si capisce niente...

  • i expected "the old castle" to sound like medieval and obscure

  • they were crazy, but so genius !!!!

  • buenisima rola!!!!

  • @wentkat, thanks, guess i was way off, i thought it was a Theremin of some sort

  • whatever that is that Emerson is playing, i WANT!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's a ribbon controller (an "interface") to his Moog.

  • Das ist noch Musik. Und nicht so ein Schrott von heute.

  • This is Electro Class 1, The first.

Fuck anyone who says otherwise.Have a nice day.

  • THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks !!! :O)

  • @swb516 THE BESTEST:P

  • If only todays band would learn from the masters from the 70s! The music of today can´t reach the standard from the 70s.

    ELP!

  • nonononono sq c la rifan.... muy muy buena musica

  • this is more than music, who says that elp is bad he should remain at sex pistols etc..

  • right!

  • great bassline in da beggining

  • c minor

  • Is in C?

  • In my Playlist many Thanks

    SwellMusik

  • what is the thing that emerson is using at the begining.

  • It's called a ribbon controller :o)

  • Keith is better than Wakeman, than Wright, than Lord, than Banks, than Bardens, he's better than every man who played a keyboard and calls himself as a keyboardist.

  • you are right man...Emerson is the best, for far.

  • @axzck well...can be, Emerson Is so good, but i like More the Banks And Wakeman Stile... Wakeman, Emerson, And Banks...Are the Best....(Wrigth Is Good, but is diferent)

  • @axzck sure, but only if you consider the techincal side...

  • @axzck do you own a "jump to conclusions mat" ?

  • @axzck totally agreed. in guitar players you can compare guitarists like blackmore and page or hendrix and page but theres no one that can be as good as emerson

  • @axzck keith is good and all but the keyboard cat... the keyboard cat is the keyboard cat!

  • Yeah its part of the synth. Its the ribbon controller. I don't particularly like all the fu**ing around but thats part of what makes Emerson Emerson. The sounds he got were incredible.

  • Well, to be honest, I don't like all that showmanship Emerson does at the beginning, i believe is boring but certainly you don't have to share my opinion.

And where is "The Old Castle"? I mean, what Keith, Greg and Carl are doing is fantastic, but I simply can not hear a bit of "The Old Castle", which is my favorite "picture". This is not an arrangement, this is an Emerson composition, with some Wring That Neck flavor...

  • I can recognize Old Castle in there around 2:14, but it's played incredibly fast in comparison to Mussorgsky's version. I can hear it, but it's being played in a way where it's easy to miss.

  • I saw this film several times back in college (I was an ELP freak). It's called "Rock and Roll Your Eyes" and it was made with unauthorized footage of the band. I understand Greg Lake blew a fuse when he heard about it. He considered it a huge embarrasment. Of course, being ELP, I loved it. Seems a little primitive now...

  • That's absolutely not true...

  • Hey simguy11, I was (am still) a huge ELP fan too! They filmed this on my bday in 1970! I read that Lake got mad not at the filming (which was planned) but at the graphic treatment/sound quality of the film, with all the nauseating colors and cartoons. Its pretty gakky. I remember seeing RnRYE when I was a kid, and I thought it was gakky then, even when that stuff was popular! I think Lake's reaction was perfectly justified considering their musicianship. It does look "primitive" now.

  • hey muchas gracias por el video esta muy bueno elp uno de las bandas q mas me llenan el alma un gran saludo desde colombia aca tambien se vive de buena musica

  • Dude... is Emerson... ejaculating amazing music or something?! What the hell is that thing he's using?

  • Amazing Music

    Terrible visual efects...

  • Praise to Moog, Wendy Carlos and Emerson!

  • Every video like this (including mine) has to include a bunch of comments like "He's not better than Wakeman" or "he look stupid" or "Jordan Rudess is the GOD of synth!" Good grief people. Just take what's good, leave the bad, live, love, and enjoy the music. Do I sound like a hippie? Cause I'm not.

  • I agree mate ! He looks the way rock stars used to look at the time... and IMHO he's definitely better than R.W. :-) To me the only amazing thing about videos like this one is seeing a lot of people watching and listening to 20/30-minute-long instrumental music without having any half-naked booty dancing about the stage and pretending to be fuc..ed by her mike !

  • Well, Emerson certainly seems to be fucking that synth...

  • @mootbooxle

oh hey I saw your talkbox vid! you're famous! :P

  • @mootbooxle Let's put it this way, Dr. Robert Moog, the inventor of the Moog Synthesizer, said that Kieth Emerson knew more about the Moog Synthesizer than anyone else in the world, including himself. Remember that Emerson would take all day setting patches on a board to get the sounds he did. Emerson is the Colossus, but they are all different and pioneers in thier own right. I say we learn from them all.

  • @mootbooxle Your second to last sentence was unintentionally insulting I hope; you might as well have said "Do I sound like a nigger? Cause I'm not."

Because you form prejudices on the stereotypical image of a 'hippie' doesn't make libel, as you've displayed, correct. Do I sound like a hippie? Cause definitively, I am =]. Not trying to engage in any pointless youtube debates by the way, everything prior to your ladder two sentences I agreed with 100%

  • @Superman575575 I can't believe you actually took offense to that. All my hippie friends wouldn't mind what I wrote one bit. You assume that I know nothing about "hippies" as it were, which couldn't be further from the truth. What's with the political rhetoric? It's completely unneccesary. The better option might have been not to comment at all; no offense was to be taken to begin with. Sorry if I hurt your feelings. :)

  • @mootbooxle I just wanted you to elaborate more for the brainless culture of tubers. Contextual sarcasm can be misleading, and it's likely that a portion of your 'thumbs up' friends mistook your ending comment as a warranted defamation of the misunderstood group. More importantly, I'm just kind of an ass. (hence the seemingly unnecessary comment) For a less politically, and more civilly geared summation; pack that b and char that green; res ipsa loguitur!

  • @mootbooxle ...you're absolutely correct there....Keith IS better than wakeman !

  • @heraldojesus21 i don't know, emerson was a virtuous, but wakeman can play 3 keybords at the same time, is dificult to know, don't you think?

  • @Akron162 ....does he like..play the third one with his wang or something ?

  • @heraldojesus21 ja...ja, very funny. Actually he can play 2, but how many people you know that can do that?

  • @Akron162 Its actually not that hard to play 2. I can and anyone who can play keyboard with both hands can. Its just that Emerson plays both of them better and beastlier than anyone else.

  • pictures at an exhibition is psychedelic

  • ELP= THE BEST BAND EVER!! :-)

  • tHE blues variation of "the old castle" is just insane! The best hammond solo in history!

Sorry Wakeman, sorry Rudess, you just dount have what it takes.

  • lol Wakeman barely used his Hammond, he only used it on like Roundabout and Ive Seen All Good People, he used the Mellotron and Moog, Though Keith totally owns Wakeman with the moog esp with that ribbon controllor solo at the beginning lmao

  • Wakeman Used his hammond alot on the "Six Wives of Henry viii" ;) But his hammond sound is crap! Emerson is the real deal!

  • Keith Emerson, Tony Banks and Rick Wright (may he Rest In Peace) were the masters of the Hammond Organ in rock. Emerson, Banks, Wright and Dennis DeYoung are the best rock keyboard players ever IMHO!

  • Actually it was Tony Kaye on the Hammond on "All Good People". I'm not sure but I think he was replaced by Wakeman because he didn't like using synths that much

  • Fantasticos.

  • the debut of acid rock, trash, punk, grunge, doom metal, noise rock, all is ELP

  • Gracias ! Uno de mis temas favoritos de ELP

  • toxik xD

  • ta muy buena esa rola

  • i think keith emerson & richard wright are the best for technique and atmosphere!!!

  • there're 2 persons about synthesizer that i like

    Keith emerson and Joe zawinul

    both are great!

  • Zawinul?! Wow, I mean, Weather Report is my absolutely No 1, but I would never compare those two... LOL. amazing music!

  • ZOMG all those lights and colors!

  • If u look to long at these "special effects" u get mad

  • thanks a lot for upload this one!!!!

  • Let´s face it: there was no other rock keyboard player in the rock genre who had that technique, virtuosity and sense for new sounds than Emerson. Just forget the rest, especially Jon Lord :-))

  • I'd mention Ray Manzarek!

  • from the technical point of view he can´t be compared with emerson - only good jazz musicians could.

  • Ray Manzarek has some piano skills!!! I think Emerson's technique is better, but that doesen't mean that they can't be compared in terms of technique!

  • Thanx, it's flattering (I'm Polish so...), but Manzarek was light years behind. I love Keith but, you guys ever heard of Mr. Richard Wakeman? He's the absolute king of keybord!

PS. What's wrong wiht Jon Lord? A, freaking, amazing musician! Let's not get entangled in all this, stupid, "competiotion stuff". These were the best, FUCKING, times for rock! Long live Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson! the whole progrock.

  • hey i´m thinking excactly like you,but you have forget triumvirat and they keyboarder jürgen fritz

the best bands are Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson and trimvirat!

  • Wakeman is a great player no doubt but I like keiths music much better.

  • I wouldn't compare 'Rick The King' to 'Keith The Butcher'... LOL, They're both 'gods of progrock'!

    Best rock ever! Cheers.

  • Yeah, theyre both good but give me JON THE LORD first and foremost.

  • Sure, I can 'give you' Ken (Hensley) the Whatever, and Tony Banks, and... give me another drink!

    Prog rock rules!!!

  • So would I. His two mid-70s albums, "The Golden Scarab" and "The Whole Thing Started..." are still awesome to this day.

  • @anonymusum Amen!!!!!

  • I guess Bob Moog never envisaged the sounds that Keith could produce from that fantastic invention. Witness the sheer power at 10.00 of that Moog on full blast!

  • I've been a fan of these guys since I was about fifteen years old, and I still hope to someday see them perform live if it ever happens again. Their adaptation of Tocata from the Brain Salad Surgery album in particular had actually inspired me to be a mathematics major when I was struggling through trigonometry in highschool and something in that song caused something to spark in my brain and it became a piece of cake. So anytime I study math I listen to ELP. I Dont know why but it works.

  • keiths technique went down the tubes after 1996 and lake can barely sing a high note anymore.

  • I love where they go into Bill Evans' "Interplay" at about 6:45! What rock band other than ELP would ever play Bill Evans?!

  • ROFL! The part where Carl is peaking under one of his cymbals at Keith, at 00:40, is hilariious!

  • Some of Emerson's best Hammond work.

  • Lol rubbing the ribbon controller on your ass is definately original.

  • its a ribbon controller man

  • is that a theremin?

or some other kind of moog contraption

  • ribbon controller

  • The effects are total seventies cheese, some producer probably decided to show the station manager they were getting their money's worth with the new multi-thousand dollar effects gadget they just bought. I just want to see the band and hear the music, the producer should have gotten more camera operators and cranes instead. Great performance of course, love the band. I do like album version a bit better though...

  • Best progressive rock band ever period!

  • Definitely lol'd at 1:37

  • This reminds me a lot of the music in Logan's Run.

  • WOW! What a great version.I actually prefer this one to the Pictures LP. Thanks for posting it.

  • Dude, who doesn't like color? That's why I clicked on the video. I think the effects make the video unique and entertains a human thought -"ooooh, cool, shiny, that's new etc." ...and that's pretty much the same thought you get when listening to their music. Also, maybe it was an attempt at making a video not about the performers and more about what their music is communicating. It does get kinda old after 5 minutes of it, though.

  • 66-I think the visuals were a reflection of the age. Like it or not, ELPs music was born in a time of massive drug experimentation and drug use, and their music appealed to that crowd-I know, being a child of that age, and enjoying being loaded on whatever & enjoying their music. Ive been clean for decades, still enjoy their music thoroughly, but you simply cant divorce them from their times or their audience at that time. And Scoobes-yeah, they sure could do that to you!

  • I just finished watching this video, My chin is still on the floor!

  • It's funny, when I used to show this to people they would either like the psychedelic effects or not; the band didn't, although it's an amazing performance, much better than the album.

    Anyone like the effects, here?

  • get high and enjoy.

  • its the best way to watch it

  • Well maybe the band wanted it that way.

  • I saw this film in a theater in Los Angeles when it first came out. After about half an hour, the audience would boo when the special effects sections started and applaud when they ended. Needless to say, the movie was not a hit.

  • oh fuck off you purist bastard and just enjoy the music - what right have you to suggest how THEY should play their OWN music and how to present their OWN performance? they wanted the colours, just suck it up you fucking wanker... it's like telling Picasso how to hold his brushes - i would have loved to see you try

  • @Animatronica fuck off you piece of fucking shit, ELP is my favorite band of all time, all i said was i would rather see them without the effects so i can see them play...fuck off

  • Comment removed

  • @ZeppelinFromtheLake

and that's the end of that..they made it big.

  • Funkberto, has a point,Music was taking a natural course through the 50,s 60,s 70,s until the executives of music companies realised when punk came along nobody gave a shit about the music, it was the FASHION that interested the masses. Unfortunately, they also decided genuine songwriters were no longer required,so for me, the end of the 70,s and the entire 80,s was some of the worst fucking music on radio ever.I hope the internet screws the music and particularly the fashion industry ten fold.

  • I could fuck the editors with a chainsaw for that. Drugy visuals are for the fucking hippies, not for musicians playing fancy classical music.

I don't know, whether the band liked it, but I hardly can imagine, they did.

  • lol look at how emerson is dressed rofl

  • gorgeus:):) amazing! cooool...i luv prog!

  • Punk Rock , sadly, kick out the Prodigious and cosmic music, made with virtuosism, replaced by TOO simple and primitive arranges. Punk Rock and MTV ARE THE PRINCIPAL GUILTYS OF THE STATE OF THE MUSIC (?) NOW.

  • legal ;D~

  • Fear =x

    XD

  • Great music, but where is the Old Castle of Mussorgsky?

  • This was EXCELLENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Greg and Carl have it on lockdown!

  • Why do these tv/video/editing room/camera using morons think it,s a great visual effect to place a lot of pointless shit over the top of musicians playing "live". They would be crucified if this happened in,football, tennis, darts,so why do it to good musicians. Even today most videos have a close up of some pathetic turd shaking his/her head around, give us a break you video spastics, show us what the musician is playing.

  • we used to think that it was cool in those days, if you can believe it. also editing room morons were probably on acid, or assumed that we were.

  • Fair enough,! I partly remember a version of this entire video without the cartoons, don,t know if it actually exists.

  • If you ever find it let the world know -- the world will be grateful. Though I have a feeling we'll be forever stuck with this. Ah well, the music's amazing anyway, innit?
