I have a problem with any song, where -o or in this case -io is added to the end of the line to make it rhyme. I'm speaking as a Scot here, and frankly the amount of folk songs I know that do this (from Scotland) is at the point of being annoying. Obviously this 'cheat' has spread to other realms...
Santy Anno--one of those magical sea chanties that has deep roots. As with most folk tunes, it started as a totally different song--one sung by British sailors praising the famous Mexican General of Alamo Fame...and then, somehow, it became a song about a ship sailing from England to California, carrying all those gold dreamers to the stark realities of gold mining in Cali. Both versions and everything in between are rousing and majestic.
Such a great, pure, rendition. Kind of saddens me to know it was recorded so long ago, and that all but one of the Trio are gone. Anyway---this was one of their best recordings.
@thestrongbad - well, each to his own. I love the Weavers, but I can't go along on this one. All the posted versions are good - Auffray, the Weavers, and the Clancys all pretty much steam their way full bore through the song, where the KT puts an interpretive dynamic to the lyric. No version "puts another to shame" - without the requisite IMHO.
@auraofgloom Is it fair, or sane, to compare an IRISH folk-cover group to the Kingston Trio who are singing about their own history? The Clancy Bro's and Tommy Makem were good at what they did - IRISH songs and the occasional Scottish Jacobite ballad. The rest I'm not so sure about.
@Jabistdudeppert - I have, and it is indeed a great version. If you go to my Comparative Video 101 article about this song, you'll see I included the live performance video of Aufray doing this at his farewell concert a couple of years back.
I have listened to other versions of this song but this is by far the best, the strumming of the guitars, the harmonies, and the chording arrangement is
the best by far. I miss these guys, they brought me much joy as a youngster!

The Weaver's version puts this one to shame.

La version d'Auffray est très médiocre en comparaison ! C'est un gag !

As much as I love "the Kingston Trio" I have to concede that the "Highwaymen" performed the better rendition. =Stefan=

Tommy Makem and the Weavers do a completely different take on this
