i had whooping cough when i was a baby i was in the hospital for 2 in a half months and they wouldnt let my mom see me i almost died from it. im getting ready to have a baby very very soon im hoping he doesnt get it like i did :(

However, it is still likely that you can be a carrier (you have not been vaccinated nor have had the disease, so there is technically no proof you have the memory T-cells). This is what upsets people. Try to get sick (kidding - we love you, don't die) or get vaccinated, that way we know you can't be a carrier.

@giddymoon, my healthy, strong 16 year old son contracted whooping cough. He was so healthy that he didn't even have a record at the medical clinic. He DID have lasting damage. Four years later, he still coughs most of the year. He was almost never sick before this, now he is sick very often. And he had been fully immunized as a child, but as they know now, those immunizations wear off. Not only that, but my newborn granddaughter almost died from whooping cough after catching it from us.

Pertussis vaccines are acellular and are unable to infect people (It is not actually physically possible for antigens to magically morph into cells, as it is impossible for a piece of paint to magically morph into a truck). I'm a medical student who's done a lot of research on vaccination (my essay was on the BCG) and frankly, vaccines aren't offered to people if they are unsafe, and secondly, nothing is 100% effective in life - if we're going to sit around waiting for that magical solution, we'll never get a solution at all. Even if something was 50% effective, it's better that than nothing else, surely.

@cyborg578 the child must have had a vulnerable immune system, and probably the vaccine had some active toxins in it which would easily yield this result. All the same it is rare for this to happen since vaccine manufacterers are pretty strict in regulations due to the risk of their product not working

Thanks for letting me know about the child. I feel so much better. And I work at a hospital in southern California and they gave all of our staff the flu and pertussis vaccine. I do hope everyone learns from this. I posted my concern on facebook about this video. No child should go through this.

@evoljedi Yes he was Okay. We can help keep cases down by getting a booster from our doctors and our kids vaccinated asap. Vaccine induced immunity only lasts until about 15 yrs of age. Adults don't get as sick as babies. Infants suffer secondary complications that can kill in 24 hours.
alright i'm just saying, i'm 16 i just got a confirmed diagnosis with pertussis and i have the vaccine up to date. they are saying that the disease is mutating so that the vaccine doesn't even work in some cases. this cough is really scary.
@omgitsxxbri Thanks for that. When you say "up to date" do you mean a booster on top of the initial shots as a baby? 15 years of age is around when the vaccine induced immunity wanes and fades. It *is* mutating and it's important for adults to get a booster to keep up herd immunity, lower infection and protect vulnerable.
I had this when I was only 8 months old. My mother told me that one day I fainted and stopped breathing, then they took me to the doctor and here I am today! Looking at this infant makes my heart cry :( good thing I have no memories or anything about how I was when I had this.

As immunity wanes anyone over the age of ~15 can infect infants unless they have a booster. The outbreak and deaths in CA, an affluent, well educated state, is due to vaccination rates as low as 50%. Success of vaccines removed high death rates, allowing fear mongering to dominate. Poorer nations have high disease & want vaccines. Immigrants seek better life & health for their family.

You say pertussis is entirely preventable by vaccine, but you really need to educate yourself before you make claims such as this. While the vaccine does protect you from Pertussis, unfortunately it is only temporary protection. In the USA, almost everyone who is 60 years old or younger has received the DTP series(DTAP nowadays) yet we continue to see serious outbreaks of Pertussis. I would say the vaccine isn't doing its job, and I would say that it isn't entirely preventable.
@moxologie It has nothing to do with the vaccine, which works in most cases. It has everything to do with the fact that people do not vaccinate their children because they're stupid and listen to the internet more than their own doctors, or they do not follow vaccinations guidelines, and so they do not keep their shots updated as they become adults. That's why outbreaks of Pertussis are occurring mainly in areas were vaccination rates are below critical level.

Last I heard, 7 states are now experiencing outbreaks... my daughter just had her 5th DTAP in April. My daughter is up to date on her shots, as am I, as are most Americans. @moxologie Honestly, ask your doctor these questions. They will be able to explain it to you in a better way than we could. Vaccines are important, and you can be well-informed very easily. With infectious disease, sometimes a layman's logic doesn't apply.

I had this at 38 last fall. I got it from my brother. Adults don't know they aren't immune anymore. Adults don't always whoop---then it passes to the babies. Get your TDap. I was choking and gagging and vomiting for those 100 days. My brother passed out in the bathroom. I had sent him to a doc-I even called and told the RN his S/S-he comes home with a sinus inf dx-and NO antibiotics. So 2wks later I get "bronchitis" and antibiotics---2 wks after that the cough starts and OMG-suffocation!!

However, it is still likely that you can be a carrier (you have not been vaccinated nor have had the disease, so there is technically no proof you have the memory T-cells). This is what upsets people. Try to get sick (kidding - we love you, don't die) or get vaccinated, that way we know you can't be a carrier.

(2) saying "we are just fine" is insensitive to the pain and suffering (and death) that this disease causes all over the world. yes, you had a fine outcome; many people do. however, at what point does the disease start to matter to you? 1 child dead for every 10 infected? 1 in 50?

@giddymoon, my healthy, strong 16 year old son contracted whooping cough. He was so healthy that he didn't even have a record at the medical clinic. He DID have lasting damage. Four years later, he still coughs most of the year. He was almost never sick before this, now he is sick very often. And he had been fully immunized as a child, but as they know now, those immunizations wear off. Not only that, but my newborn granddaughter almost died from whooping cough after catching it from us.

I'm a medical student who's done a lot of research on vaccination (my essay was on the BCG) and frankly, vaccines aren't offered to people if they are unsafe, and secondly, nothing is 100% effective in life - if we're going to sit around waiting for that magical solution, we'll never get a solution at all. Even if something was 50% effective, it's better that than nothing else, surely.

@evoljedi Yes he was Okay. We can help keep cases down by getting a booster from our doctors and our kids vaccinated asap. Vaccine induced immunity only lasts until about 15 yrs of age. Adults don't get as sick as babies. Infants suffer secondary complications that can kill in 24 hours.

@omgitsxxbri Thanks for that. When you say "up to date" do you mean a booster on top of the initial shots as a baby? 15 years of age is around when the vaccine induced immunity wanes and fades. Sadly, this gives anti-vaccine fear mongers an angle to claim the majority are infected by the vaccinated, and are themselves vaccinated. Technically true, but quite ignorant. It *is* mutating and it's important for adults to get a booster to keep up herd immunity, lower infection and protect vulnerable.

I had this when I was only 8 months old. My mother told me that one day I fainted and stopped breathing, then they took me to the doctor and here I am today! Looking at this infant makes my heart cry :( good thing I have no memories or anything about how I was when I had this.

Yeah, i always thought it was just a bad type of cold.
Now that i have it, NO, it is NOTHING like just a normal cold.
An adult can control the spitting/drool/vomit a bit better, but you feel like crap, i have already puked, blacked out, and missed days of sleep from this....
Talk about sucky.
When my doctor told me what i had I was like, ok.... no biggy, but now its getting worth just like these youtube videos....

You say pertussis is entirely preventable by vaccine, but you really need to educate yourself before you make claims such as this. While the vaccine does protect you from Pertussis, unfortunately it is only temporary protection. In the USA, almost everyone who is 60 years old or younger has received the DTP series(DTAP nowadays) yet we continue to see serious outbreaks of Pertussis. I would say the vaccine isn't doing its job, and I would say that it isn't entirely preventable.

@moxologie It has nothing to do with the vaccine, which works in most cases. It has everything to do with the fact that people do not vaccinate their children because they're stupid and listen to the internet more than their own doctors, or they do not follow vaccinations guidelines, and so they do not keep their shots updated as they become adults. That's why outbreaks of Pertussis are occurring mainly in areas were vaccination rates are below critical level.

@KWalsh554 Not necessarily true. How do you know that the outbreaks occur in areas where there are low vaccination rates? Last I heard, 7 states are now experiencing outbreaks... my daughter just had her 5th DTAP in April. My daughter is up to date on her shots, as am I, as are most Americans. But yet, they recommend we get more shots. That, to me seems silly. If the shots aren't working, why take more? Btw, have you heard of Parapertussis? Similar illness, similar symptoms. No vaccine available

@moxologie Honestly, ask your doctor these questions. They will be able to explain it to you in a better way than we could. Vaccines are important, and you can be well-informed very easily. With infectious disease, sometimes a layman's logic doesn't apply.

@KWalsh554 Perhaps the outbreaks aren't Pertussis at all, rather Parapertussis, which can't be prevented by any number of shots. Also, I wouldn't call parents who choose to not immunize their children stupid. While I DO choose to vaccinate, I think that if a person doesn't want to put foreign substances into their bodies, then its their personal choice. We all have the right to choose and refuse what goes into our bodies, correct? And as parents, we do as we believe is right for our children.

No vaccine necessarily works forever, I'm sure any competent doctor would tell you that. But if everyone vaccinated their kids, the condition could concievably not exist anymore in the population and no one would be exposed, anyway.

I had this at 38 last fall. I got it from my brother. Adults don't know they aren't immune anymore. Adults don't always whoop---then it passes to the babies. Get your TDap. I was choking and gagging and vomiting for those 100 days. My brother passed out in the bathroom. I had sent him to a doc-I even called and told the RN his S/S-he comes home with a sinus inf dx-and NO antibiotics. So 2wks later I get "bronchitis" and antibiotics---2 wks after that the cough starts and OMG-suffocation!!

@barn524 You cough in succession and then when all the air is out of your lungs (well not all-just the amt you can exhale) your throat spasms shut and you have to Make your self swallow a few times to relax it and then you either vomit, gag and always gasp for air....get your booster..You DONOT want this-or pass it on fatally to a baby under 6 mos who isn't immunized....

oh I had this last Oct...my brother picked it up in sept...(a 'cold') then 2 weeks later his cough started. He whooped and said he felt like passing out. I sent him to a dr-I called the nurse there and told her all his S/S and that we had a 2 month old nephew. (WC could kill him). He comes home with a sinus inf dx and NO ATBs-well right after that I get 'bronchitis' and get ATBs-then 2 weeks later the cough starts...OMG

my baby had this cough for almost a year!!!! my goodness...in her sleep she sounded like that everynight...but thankfully she hasn't coughed like this for the past week...hope it doesn't come back! fyi...yes I did take her to the clinic alot of times...but was told it was just a cold or something...kept taking her, finally some ventilin and it slowly stopped! finally peaceful sleep for her...
