I can only draw really well when I have a picture to look at. Then again, I haven't really experimented to find a style of my own yet... I do realism mostly, but I can't really just take it from my head and put it on paper, it doesn't turn out as good as I want.
You're really gifted if you drew this from your head. (which is what I'm pretty sure you did) :)

I don't learn by watching XP I trace it once so I know where the strokes go and get the feeling of the spacing and type of style then I do it freehanded and see how it turns out. If it sucks I keepdrawing just one part over and over again until I think it's good and move on to another then I fit all the peices together like a puzzle(OMG I didn't know I was this much like near 0-0'... least I have Mello's emotion)

cool! i have'nt got it but its so cool! i followed it, and did it in my sketch pad.. i was soooo tired at clicking the play and pause just to follow it.. but, i've memorized the lines. the hard part is, the hair. but i ge use to it.
It's interesting to see that you start with the hair. I usually start with the eyes because I know it'll be the first thing people will look at. Or maybe I just do that to help me visualize the head's posture... Or something.
By the way, great job on this one. The way you tapered the hair definitely reminds me of Death Note.
