I cried when I saw this scene for the first time on the cinematic, ofc, that's b4 I read that Gandalf would return in the Two Towers and the Return of the King(that was many years ago XD). I so loved Gandalf bc he was so kind and cool, and when he fell, I thought to myself: ''But... butbutbut... why? sobsob'' XP My tears just kept coming. Oh so sad, but I became happy once I saw Gandalf again :D.

The death could have been easily avoided. Why didn't Gandalf just turn around, blast the bridge away and keep running? That would've taken 2 seconds and he'd live, but he took a minute of talking and instead died. I get that it was to save the hobbits, but how does sitting there for a minute when he could destroy the bridge help them?

@goscrafteagles That wouldn't done anything. Balrogs have wings so if Gandalf just destroyed the bridge and left, it would've just jumped over the chasm and kept following them. He wanted to make sure the Balrog died or at least couldn't follow them.

And I also never understood why Gandalf was resurrected. I understand that it's all supposed to be metaphorical, but it still didn't make much since.

@goscrafteagles If a bird falls without flapping its wings first, it's going to fall for a while since it takes time to recover. The Balrog took a mistep and started falling and once it fell, it had no chance to fly back up so it had to resort to using its whip to bring Gandalf down. That's my best guess anyway. As for Gandalf being ressurected, he was sent by back by the Valar, which are basically like lesser gods. The beings lower than them are the Maiar, which Sauron and all the wizards are.
