I would have liked to have seen a nod to the Incredible String Band in this clip . If you are not familiar with the band , check them out . They were a very innovative psych/folk/acid band from the 60s
@polkacat i saw Vetiver a couple weeks ago and showed up to the table drunk as a sailor but Andy was so nice and helped me out and even signed my shirt. he's truly a lovely gentleman.
I listen to "new folk" and "pysch folk" ...that's pretty much my favorite stuff! I don't really see what's wrong with the label folk. Ultimately it boils down to marketing, I guess. Artists want to be "beyond labels" or "above genres" in order to separate themselves from the pack. It's a way of saying "I'm better" without literally saying it. Sort of like the exclusive scene of late 70s NY disco.
I think it's also because using a label makes it easier for people to visualize what you are doing. Folk=Bob Dylan, Freak Folk=Devendra Banhart. Bad Folk=Joanna Newsome. The thing you shouldn't do is pigeonhold people (DB is tired of the Freak Folk label, apparently...). I honestly wouldn't care if an artist with so & so label pinned to them decided to go down a different direction musically or just switch things up a bit...as long as it's good stuff. People just have to open their minds a bit.
I don't think the term folk is really a label or genre as of punk or rap because it isn't really one particular sound & style, but it is songs of just the plain people, not a "style" of people & have been passed down as of a family tradition of some kind. It'd be hard to make a song at this very second about anything & just call it folk because how it sounds. I think it'd take time or something? That's why it'd make sense to use the term folk-singer over folk artist in some way?
It's funny they call this ''New Folk''their really isn't anything new about this genre.Musicians have been creating psych influenced acoustic music since the 60's with little or no recognition.Checkout Manduka and Congregacion or Ney Matogrosso's early solo stuff.Anyways this stuff is good but no way new.
I don't realy consider myself a Folk artist either simply because you are often stigmatised by the term. Most people expect Folk to be traditional and although these artists and myself may draw from some traditional influences the music that is created is not purely a result of this. Here we enter the relms of magick and myriad possibilities!
folk you! just admit your music is BASED in folk music...friggin musisicians..soooo annoying sometimes...wish they would have mentioned The Skygreen Leopards or The Akron Family or the king of indie-psych-folk Wil Oldham aka Bonnie Prince Billy..."I've heard the dragons dance" - Circulus...hahahaha!
They're all too busy in some pathetic way trying to be 'cool' to admit they've got anything to do with folk music. Although has 'circulus' really got much to do with 'folk'? Or even with music at all? Seems to me it's nothing more than a platform for a drug-addled, pathological show-off.
The magistrate has decreed that thou must go into ye stocks for seven days and nights for such words. Indeed ye devil has gotten hold of thy tongue and thou must be seen as a varlet and a rogue and pelted with foul things.
Devendra Banhart is a mark bolan wannabe and a pile of pretentious wank.

to be fair, it makes sense they dont want to be
categorised as folk: they all want to make their own musical path, and thats proper ace!

This is the best thing to happen to music since Fairport Convention. Also, I need one of those hats like the guy from Circulus was wearing.

This seems really silly to me, but whatever floats people's boat. It's kinda nice having these people in the world- totally opposite of me.
