I'm sure the Brenda Lee comment below was a joke. I also doubt that Carson thought that Danke Schoen was sung by a woman. Wayne Newton made his bones on the variety and talk shows of the 60's and Carson was no fool.

When he was young Wayne was plagued by comments about his sexual orientation.

That's why he dyed his hair black and grew a moustache (also dyed black). The voice, fair skin and blond hair wouldn't mean a thing today but in the mid 60's everything was questioned.
