Science and rationality are often accused of having a cold bleak outlook, but why is it bleak to face up to the evidence of what we know?..Science is the poetry of reality. -Richard Dawkins
Every person in the world should watch this short little video. If they did, I wonder how many perspectives will be changed, how much good will be done, if even a tiny fraction takes Carl's words to heart?
"Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors, so that in glory and triumph they can become the mometary masters of a fraction of a dot"
"Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light."
@btownbeastman Well, yes, a bit of something here on the dot died the day Carl did, BUT...(that wonderful, useful word) we are listening to his words here today. We have his words, his visual records, and, I think and hope, so many have been inspired to think and to feel and to imagine. Yes, we lost a lot when we lost Carl, but he has given us a precious gift....
I watched Carl Sagen`s programmes when I was a child. They were fascinating . It must have been a wonderful privilege to have known Carl Sagen. Thanks . Abe
If only our leaders could take Carl's message to heart: what a wonderful world this would be. It is up to us, the educated, the enlightened, to take up the torch and share the message of universality. To have awareness of our world in space, to see our place in context, is a rare vision, and we must do all that we can to ensure that humankind lives up to its potential and does not become mired in complacency, politics, or religion. To see that we live up to our potential is our utmost goal.
@MarioOnShrooms this isnt from a cosmos episode. this is just a clip of narration by him. but if you are about to watch an episode of cosmos, might i suggest one voice in the cosmic fugue? its my personal favorite.
@sorry8140@MarioOnShrooms I would not bet on it... but I'm pretty sure this narration is part of Cosmos. I remember watching it there and then looking for it in Youtube to share it with friends. Unfortunately I can't remember what episode it was (wherever he was talking about the Voyager). Either way, @MarioOnShrooms if you haven't watched Cosmos, I really think you should. Is a little dated on latest discoveries, but it is beautifully put together.
Sagan was spot on here. The Universe is so vast & wonderful that at first you feel insignificant & yet the fact that, by science, you can understand the universe, is equally amazing & wonderful. As Blaise Pascal said nearly 400 years ago,
“It is not from space that I must seek my dignity, but from the government of my thought. I shall have no more if I possess worlds. By space the universe encompasses and swallows me up like an atom; by thought I comprehend the world.”
For new years, I smoked a joint under the stars and lay on my back while I listened to this. I drifted through the stars and became one with the unimaginable beauty of the universe.
“If there is anyone out there that can look around this demented slaughterhouse of a world that we live in and tell me that man is a noble creature, believe me, that man is full of Bullshit!”
This honestly brings tears to my eyes. How can people turn their head and not think for themselves when it comes to the big picture. Finding truth is the ultimate happiness.
listen everyone do wat u need to liv help ur family survive hav sex replicate thats all that mother nature wants u r her helper decide ur fate let evolution tak it's toll and save ur genetic material feel happy live life the way u need to live it thumbs up if u agree and remember be happy :)
This may have been the most beautiful form of art I have ever encountered, if not the greatest. I truly have never heard someone think of earth in this manner. I thought similarly to certain aspects of the video, but this truly is beautiful.
@blurtoutbert 1. Only self-important idiots care if a man smoked a naturally occurring plant in his own private life.
2. Are you insinuating that humanity hasn't lived out our life on Earth?
3. Are you insinuating that humanity hasn't spilled blood for their God's and rulers?
4. I would rather respect and remember a man who actually existed and spread a message of peace and wonder than believe in an infinite, all knowing, invisible deity and allows death and chaos in his name.
@blurtoutbert Drugs are just a tool to make thinking easier, and better. Too much of anything is bad, but in the right amounts it can be good for you. The reason you believe he's wrong is because you were fed by your government, teachers, parents etc... how drugs ruin your life and kill you. No matter what you do, one day you will die too. Oh and tell me, what's this 'God' you speak of?.
My favorite part is the "every young couples in love" imagine every time teenagers and young adults kissed for the first time and found love for the first time, it's beautiful if you ask me
This is brilliant. Like Sagan, I believe that in order to truly be satisfied, we need to realize that, in the grand scheme of things, our own lives are insignificant and can only be made significant through our own actions. His world view is one of the most refreshing, revealing, and loving views I've encountered.
He makes a very good point, my favorite part... People spill rivers of blood to be a temporary ruler of a fraction of a dot smaller than anyone can imagine compared to the rest of the universe.
I find it sad that people use Mr. Sagan as an argument against Gods and religion. Because from what I have heard of him, he seemed the type to not care what others believed; whether it be in God, or Allah, or in nothing at all, as long as they respected the planet, the Pale Blue Dot, and respected others.
@sozzzz he may not have cared but he certainly made a lot of points against the possibility of a god.
This for example, we are less than a speck on a speck in an electron microscope on full "zoom" to the universe, and religion would have you believe that all of it was made for us. He made his points clear and displayed rationality at all times, that is why people quote him so much when debating theists
It is amazing what people will do to be the best they can possibly be only to stand out on such an insignificant speck. The human race is truly amazing.
Considering the ratio of down votes vs up votes, I'll bet most of those are due to the proximity of the like button to the dislike button and a careless timing of motion and click.
One of the related videos is "Breasts are the best." It has 6 million views, compared to the 840,000 thousand here. I am studying to be a secondary science teacher, and hope that every student around the world sees this video, so that we can move forward and grow as a single group of people.
