I watched, with interest, your video posting and was impressed by the way you articulated your argument. However, up and down the country, the people I speak to (I work in Social Work), economics, 42 day detention, European treaties, ID cards are nowhere near any of the subjects people want to talk about. Your comments are aimed at people educated and experienced in those subjects but more attention to ordinary views and opinions would make it more relevant to ordinary people in the country
you're right people care more about other issues that touch them closer unfortunately I think these particular issues are very important indeed because it's important for the state to show the best example and standards not the worst
"kidnapping" someone for 42 days is illegal in most circumstances, why should the state have a carte blanche?
I wish I could be so optimistic. Many here have "Hope" in Obama, but I see him and the Democratic party to be a side of the same coin. It may get slightly better here, and *crossing fingers and toes* better for those elsewhere, but real and clear change for the better of citizens will continue to be elusive. As long as we are stuck in this rut of only having a two party system, true democracy cannot flourish here. -I see myself becoming Canadian in the future. :)
there is a lot to be optimistic about really, for example within 2 years solar panels for the home will be affordable economic option and if there's one thing the "big boys" hate it's people having the ability to be self sufficient, that is why they centralise production as much as they possibly can as well as government of course (ie. EU, NAFTA etc.)
People need to get into guerilla gardening, etc, growing their own food and such. We need to unplug from big brother.
You sound like a real patriot. Challenging those who are supposed to represent us is essentially a hallmark of democracy in action. In my heart, I've always seen the UK as one of the last real democracies left...kind of shocking to hear that it's going the way of the US. As an American I've become more and more cynical as the years pass. I'm positive that real democracy in the US is DOA or close to it. It's rather like someone up to the neck in quicksand. You can still see a bit of them, but...
It all depends on your definition of patriot I suppose :-)
I believe in freedom
in truth there are no countries, the reason the UK is goign in the same direction as the US is because the "powers that be" have the same agenda for all of us, more for themselves and less for everyone else!
so you see we're swept along in the same tide, but the tide will turn
Be a good sheep and accept your RFID implant. You will be well looked after. We won't let any wolves get you because then we wouldn't be able to shear you.
Good for you - these MPs need to be challenged more often. Most of them would not have read the Lisbon treaty, as it is - it's like turkeys voting for Christms. Did you know that our British census is being/or has been put to tender and it may be Lockheed Martin USA who gets the contract? Helpful eh!! Under the Patriot Act the CIA will have easy access now to anyone with a muslim sounding name.
Yes, I am a little cynical with our politics and politicians I am afraid, and most of the capitalist system, but that is another story for another day I think...
A five-star example of getting of our arse and actually trying to do something about issues we face. As for Harris's voting history, well, a fine example of a Conservative MP - or do we have two Conservative parties in the UK, the Conservative Party and the Labour Party?
Conservative? oh no, don't you know they are neo-liberal... isn't it great? we get a choice between "big government" neo-conservatives, and "big government" neo-liberals hooray for democracy!
PS. re: "A five-star example of getting of our arse and actually trying to do something about issues we face. " Thanks so much, indeed thats the reason I did this video, to encourage others to take any opportunities to do same.
Tom Harris's comments about people being 'bloody miserable' were very bad timing. However on the wider point hes right. We love complaining in this country (and I include myself) but are amongst the most priveleged people on earth. Im not saying people shouldn't raise valid concerns and be angry about certain issues- and this video is very reasonable but in general I think we do complain too much.
yeah, we complain too much and take too little action on anything ever
people spend all their time moaning and none of their time making a difference to the issues which they are moaning about, and so they get the government they deserve,
they want the state to "take care of it" for them and then complain when it does a terrible job, but this is all going to change as of now.
When people start solving the problem instead of complaining about it we will have a shiny new planet x
Well said- Actually I was commenting on your video as it was the only one I could find 'Tom Harris' on- I didn't mean to imply you were complaining- I think you have constructed this well and in a professional way.
thanks, i also noticed that this is the only video relating to my MP, I'm glad you stumbled upon it, please feel free to check out my other videos as some of them might interest you :-) best wishes, Ant
No point expecting any truth out of politicians. Especially the New Labour automatons. The only one I trust is Vince Cable and I bet he didn't get where he is at the moment by being an angel.
In fact some of the councillors are pretty good people, MPs live in a weird bubble where they hang out with politicians and all tehir info is politician info, they are very much out of touch with the sentiment of the public.
Of course some politicians are liars, just like some builders are liars, some actors are liars, some police are liars etc. Some PEOPLE are liars- and yes, politicians are people, they have anger, fear, optimism and pessimism like anyone else. Most go into politics with good intentions- they can never please everyone.
This is great that Americans can see that UK citizens are being faced with the same problems on issues that policians are presenting or not fully disclosing to the citizens. Thank you so much for posting this and I do hope that everyone will favorite it!

You are clearly an intelligent and well read person, Anthony, but so out of touch with what ordinary voters up and down the country want
