  • Ooooooo what happened at 2:29 with that descending B minor arpeggio?

  • @NiutamUkGeDoru yeah, a bit off, but it was just a rehearsal

  • Maxim Vengerov ist genius!!!!!!!

  • Just amazing..

I don't understand people who complain about violinists' facial expressions and movements. Listen with your ears.

And the faces and movements aren't created for show. They happen when you let music absolutely posess you as some of these amazing musicians do. You're missing the whole point if you're here to watch a visually pleasing performance.

  • this is actually hilarious.

  • υπέροχο..

  • his face makes me uncomfortable to watch..

  • It's the best recording as long as you don't actually watch him (or for me at least). It puts me off

  • Great music! A wonderful perfomance! Saint-Saens would be pleased hearing it ^^ In 1:03 and in 1:22 the tension is warming, it's perfect!

  • his expression is really bizarre and erratic. not sure I like it

  • I personally love Vengerov's expressions, he does it so consistently in everything he ever played I find it hard to believe he fakes it just for shits. He just seems to get right into the music and just doesn't give a fuck.

It's too bad his injury has prevented him from playing more.

  • @Volunteers4awesome what happened to him to make him from playing any more?????It's a pity!

  • Why does everyone keep commenting on facial expressions? It's ridiculous! If you don't like it, close your eyes. If you do like it, watch more facial expressions when you see Yo Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Rostropovich, DuPre, Perlman, Kogan, Glenn Gould, etc., etc., etc., etc. People who complain about facial expressions obviously aren't too focused on the music.

  • There were no obvious deviations within the transitions which were fluid, flowing and smoothly, precisely executed. The smooth, flowing polished quality only enhanced the violinists and orchestra's reputation for being able to create a professional quality markable product which is a pleasure to listen too even in the best circles of the classical music world.

  • That was bravissimo and worth listening too. There is an old saying: you can either go through life tearing others down and accomplishing nothing or you can go through life working hard at what you do and accomplish everything.... Which way will you choose to go?

  • Hmm.. Ya'll, I dunno.. I just say: YOU try playing it.

  • Vengerov is great. He istotally in his playing;! Bravo Vengerov; this recording is in 2006. How is he now in 2011...Any new recordings..?

  • Vengerov is great. He istotally in his playing;! Bravo Vengerov;

  • Sometimes, too much is worse than too little... LIKE NOW!

  • If this is his interpretation, fine... I guess. But I hate it. It feels choppy.

  • @jhendricks316 You choppy boy. Just try his playing and you'll probably understand....much later...

  • Gil Shaham plays it better. Without the ridiculous facial expressions.

  • @Finnviolin94 If you don't put your heart content then you will play like a typemachine, like Gil no drama no roundup no phrasing no music.

  • Maxim you are the BEST Violinist in this century I LOVE YOUR WORK

  • he forces it too much. Also the composition is lacking in substance so why is this violinist playing it to the hilt? lol

  • Envied? Only if you desire what others possess. I just love knowing he is this great. It makes me feel a love for the human spirit. Majestic pride is as good a description as I can make for this feeling. The best word to describe anyone attacking this man is 'evil'.

  • It seemed like Vengarov was trying to blow the roof off that place.

I think he came pretty close.

  • Fantastic. Some daunting up-bow fast passages, but always musical. To be envied. A good recording of the orchestra.

  • 5:50

  • 0:11

he looks like robert downey Jr. from iron man

    lol

  • It is not worse than Oistrach.

  • c'est mon idole !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • here is a man who feels the emotion of the music on every level. just amazing

  • MAXIM WHEN CAN U PERFORM AGAIN???? HOWZ UR SHOULDER!!!! I WANNA WATCH UR CONCERTS SOOO BADLY!!!!

  • Maxim,please come back!

  • aww.... he looks like he is having so much fun while playing this :D

  • <3 sant saens. vengerov's good too :)

  • is vengerov also playing the bass? :-)

  • gorgeous :)

  • Wonderful

  • bravo

  • strange face but plays awesome!

  • @Jeannexxx5 im glad im not the only one who reckons his face is ridiculous

  • - he works out

  • Seriously...Those "silly acrobatics" are what makes his sound so powerful and amazing. It not just for show...i admit, some of it is overwhelming, but no one can play like Maxim because no one feels the music like he does. Every movement he makes is directed to his sound (beside crazy face mvts) and thats why hes so freaking amazing! Try and find someone who can play saint-saens like he can...you cant. Your just cant.

  • A me quest'uomo mi fa toccare il cielo con un dito, mi fa emozionare come non mai. Lo adoro è MAGNIFICO!

  • semplicemente FANTASTICO!!!

  • WOW!!! The thing I'm most impressed with is the audio quality of this actual performance, if it actually IS the audio from this performance. I THINK it is. I already expected the performance of this group to be spectacular, and it definitely delivered, but the corresponding audio is outstanding, which I wouyldnt expect from just an "unmixed? unproduced? rehearsal session. Im sure there had to be alot of production on this video. It sounds too good just to be a camera mic or similar.

  • bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • crazy facial expressions and body gestures like this actually sell performers, as stupid as i think that is. i am rather stiff when i play but that's just my personality. my teachers are always trying to get me to do this silly acrobatics and theatrics.

  • @vlnvlaclogbaerhpno That isn't forced expressions. I dont like see a musician playing like a stone with no movements or face expressions. Without expressions the musician is a MP3 Player with human body. But i dont like an actor.

The expressions gives more heart and emocional plus to the melody. Music is not only hear.

  • they don't move because they just feel like doing it... the emotion that is felt while they are playing it causes them to move in the right way.

  • see a robot play violin. type in "toyota robot violinist" . . . .

  • @vlnvlaclogbaerhpno stiffness on playing is like losing the joy of life.

  • Sí, él es un fenómeno, ya lo sabemos. Pero yo me quedé impactado con la violinista que se ve a la izquierda de Maxim. Cómo se llama? Alguien la conoce? De pelo cortito. Me encantó!!!

    suerte!!!

  • the music isn't hard at all. He didn't press on the G string and sounds great. Very great techniques. BRAVO!!

  • Это просто ГРАНДИОЗНО!!! Венгеров - величайший скрипач!

  • something about watching virtuoso's makes me so envious which is an emotion i hate to feel but cant deny the obvious this guy is great, and he looks little stupid when he plays but that neither here nor there lol

  • He is fantastic

  • His facial expressions are a bit sickening, but I can't critisize him because his violin playing is incredible... Bravo!

  • his violin playing "was" incredible

  • C'mon.... It's the 3rd movement of this concert.... not the first.....

P.s for me, i like his play very much... because it's never boring to hear... i can imagine a story for each pieces of him... and that's incredibile...

  • watch his playing till almost 1998.A completely different violinist and musician.Maybe he has burnt his great talent through the eldless appearences. He was the absolute violinist but he became the new Menuhin.I hope he comes back like other artists that made a pause fresh and not fed up.

  • muy buena version , pero toca unos pasajes , que no corresponde exactamente al concierto , o sea exajera algunos , pasajes del conciertos , saludos

  • as annoying as he may be to watch, he definately has technical brilliance.

  • he is great... even dough he is maybe tense or the violin sounds scratchy, is because he is using a little bit more force then u are used to... all this things make up the artists style... u don't like, u don't watch! he has his good parts and his bad parts. but he is good

  • Comment removed

  • what a great conductor!

  • THE GREATEST!!!

  • incredibile.. adoro Vengerov!!

  • el mejor de tdos es el .

  • OBOJAYU KANAL MEZZO

  • i am sure the recording come out will just sound great. as long as you just appreciate his music.

  • Sorry but I don't like this version ...

  • your sister............

  • u nego skripka kajet'sya takoi malen'koi kogda on derjit ee v rukah

  • haha mne tozhe tak vsegda kazalos! xD

dazhe kogda ya ego videl v zhivuiu na stzene!

  • yup, i also remarked that.

    ...

    he makes such funny faces....

  • The best is Christian Ferras

  • .....this guy's posture limits his sound. You don't ever tense up while playing....quite a large part of it sounds artificial and scrunched, as well as too tightened. Although he has some great techniques and tones, his posture and his excess dig into the emotional realm acts against him. Not bad at all, but definitely not one of my favorite violinists.

  • AGREED!

  • the sound is flying.. what limits are you talking about??

  • You talk nonsense, kiddo.

  • FOR REAL. I agree with everything you said. HE MOVES TOO MUCH!!!

  • Awesome!!!Virtuoso...

  • If you are not going to say anything interesting or constructive criticism, it is better not to expose the whole world see how much crap and garbage you write.

  • agreed. "Light weight." hmmm...just don't look at him. I bet if I gave you two anonymous recordings with one being of vengerov and the other of a "Heavy weight" violinist and asked you which was better, you would say vengerov

  • @Brunildilla Respect. Empty criticism is criticism for nothing.

  • @atzitzikas You come from Grecia, how interesting , beautiful country !!.

  • @Brunildilla It has positives and negatives and some little beauty thought

  • wow they really cut a lot, and swiched sections. look at the sheet music. I wonder why they did that? any ideas from anyone?

  • They only used the second half of this movement.

  • he goes to gym?

  • Sin palabras, genial, es uno entre mil!!!

  • just brilliant, in almost all aspects.

lol did any of you guys see that the base player might be wearin the same shirt as Vengerov? xD

  • lol look at the conductor at 1:59 lol very graceful

  • hes fun to look at. in a ngood way

  • 是Saint-Saens 第三协奏曲

  • what orchestra is he playing with? or is it just a conglomeration of hired professional musicians for this particular session?

  • I was wondering the same thing

  • I wondering that

But I think that they are professional, or There are nobody could make that beutiful sound

  • philharmonia- it says in the descript.

  • its the philharmonia orchestra.

  • 那位告诉我这是什么协奏曲,

  • 是Saint-Saens 第三协奏曲

  • great vid

hi anyone want to chat F5

  • YEAH

  • JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND LISTEN!!!!! I'v GOT A NEWS FOR ALL ANTIVENGEROVS!!! MUSIC SHOULD BE LISTENED NOT WATCHED!!!!!

  • especially in this case when watching is very ugly

  • Maybe, but for you what"s it's ugly.. the music, the interpretation?? or maybe your

    frustrations????

  • ja my friend...the music is not ugly at all but masterful, i was alluding to the way he looks, which is very ugly

  • Actually, Vengerov is considered by many to be the leading living violinist today. Your comment about pent-up energy and grimaces is bullshit if you'll actually listen to the sound Vengerov is making on his violin.

  • cchamp27... you are very very wrong! If you want to live with the memories of your "best" violinist of the past is OK. But don't tell me that Kremer, Shaham, Bell, Chuanyun Li (among others) are not truly masters of the violin because they don't "focus" their whole energy into playing the violin but also into making faces and grimaces.

  • it's about becoming the music, if you will. you have to let it flow through you, and more often than not, that leads to movement. also, the way violin was taught back in the time of oistrakh and heifetz was the reason they didn't move much or at all. times change, and all the artists of this era move while they play. and listen to haykhhh, because he's right. vengerov is an extremely expressive player even if you take away the visual.

  • the way you let the music "flow through you" is by being relaxed with your instrument and removing tension. look at the musicians in this orchestra - not one of them is moving. by your definition then, would you say they are inexpressive because music obviously can't "flow through them" in that relaxed state? woudl you say heifetz, horowitz, oistrakh, rubinstein, milstien, menuhin are inexpressive. they are masters because they have removed physical impediments and tension from their playing

  • oh, also, this is a recording session. if you watch his live performances, he still moves a lot, but he reigns it in a bit.

  • The best is Christian Ferras

  • оркестор играет хорошо!!!

  • I do not think Vengerov stands in front of the mirror every morning trying to figure out what faces to use when he plays :-)

He is outstanding! In my eyes one of the top ten ever. Technique and emotion, hand in hand, in a way you almost never see.

  • bravo! he's the real star.

  • He is, without doubt, one of the greatest violinists around. The only thing I REALLY can't stand are the stupid faces he makes when he plays. I think it's so pretentious and unnecessary. In his younger days he was well-behaved when playing. Those kinds of faces just annoy me and detract from his truly magnificent virtuosity

  • i don't think vengerov does it on purpose. those faces are organic its not forced. im not sure if you play violin, but if i saw you play, im sure i could point out habits that you may have or things you do with your face or your movements.

  • i never thought that anyone could have the emotion of joshua bell, and the flawless technich of heifetz. This man is sublime

  • He is acting or playing? Bravo, but don't move so much!

  • Amazing playing. Her certainly brings an extra layer of interpretation. I just, personally, find his mannerisms distracting.

  • wow his saint saens playing is amazing

  • is that the violin he usually plays on? sounds awfully bright to me. maybe i have something in my ears..

  • it's his 1727 kreutzer stradivarius

  • All of you guys talking and critisizing motion and shit like that when playing obvious dont play the violin or are just plain morons. It doesnt matter how a player plays especially a virtuoso like Maxim as long as the desired sound is acquired. A violinist could do back flips for all I care while playing just as long as the peice comes out with great quality. You guys think way too much and try to be too deep with your thoughts. Try actually playing the violin and then speak.

  • here here! it gets boring ive ner actually noticed is movement as i am just captivated by his beautiful playing. That note at 1.45 is amazing!

  • who was the jackass(from EMI music probably) that wrote: "1er mov."

  • just listen to his amazing playing, learn something from it, and stop criticizing motion. I've listened to three of these saint-saens videos and ppl keep talking about how good/bad motion is. last time i checked, the most amazing violinists have some sort of motion, which is why they're on the stage and on the cover of cds rather than us.

  • yeah he does.. but hes definately my favorite violinist by far

  • I love him and the orchestra sounds really FAT i love it

  • yes, exceptional.

  • these facial expression could seem weird but it is necessary when someone feels music like him..

  • It's painful to watch him :D you must closeyour eyes and hear the music only. That way,it's good. But,I much prefer M.Iashvili or David Oistrakh

  • for "henryprost"

If you were a violin player, you would know:moving helps to do more expression in the piece. I believe Vengerov's motions are true. I mean he doesn't give oneself airs. by the way too much moving is better then too less.

  • i disagree. i had a teacher once say that moving too much is like trying to land a 747 on a ship in the middle of a rainstorm. An appropriate amount of movement is good. Too much is distracting and may actually hurt your playing.

BTW: This is the 3rd movement of Saint Saens, not the first.

  • Agreed. Movement to a certain extent is good, but you must still retain a good posture and sense of balance and hold the violin up. That said, if you watch Vengerov, although he's moving a lot, his vioin is staying in pretty much the same position so that's why he can move so much.

  • I think moving helps or not depends on how settled the violin player is, or how settled they can keep themselves when playing. Most of time, "moving helps" is based on the condition that a player feels comfortable and plays under control. If Vengerove doesn't move and feels comfortable with his moving and plays under control, that's always fine.

  • Yes, well he is Vengerov and has damn good enough technique to land his 747 in the middle of a blizzard and still have technique to spare. He's one of the best violinists in the world for a reason, and he can do whatever the hell he wants. God knows he knows more about what hurts his playing than you do, and the fact of the matter is that he's a damned fine virtuoso and can figure out whether he's moving too much or not.

  • Who the hell are you to criticize a great violinist like Vengerov. If you knew anything about true playing, you would know that motion is what gives a piece of music feeling. And calling him an asshole, because he puts feeling into a piece, just shows you have no idea what your talking about.

  • you know, you are right, im no one, i play the violin and i really overreacted and exagerated, he is really a great violinist, thats the true, his movements, well, i will just listen to him, but also think, movement is of course important, but for me, the caracterization of playing the violin could be much better if would be a little more quiet, life menuhin or heifetz, but, or course, they are different, so, if you like vengerov, fine, im sorry about the innecesary bad words

  • Th motion you are talking about is the motion of a piece, not the player himself. If the physical motions helps the musical motion then it is considered acceptable. As for moving to put his feelings into a piece, it actually hurts twice: 1. it distracts the audience, and 2. it affects the direction and amount of pressure applied in various parts of the violin. while Vengerov does play miraculously, he admits himself that his playing is more performance than skill.

  • the best violinist after heifetz!

    The Next generation of virtuoso.

  • can you prove what you say??

  • I love his playing but watching his countenance makes me question his personality. It ruins the music; when I don't watch, my admiration is overwhelming.

  • my personality is quite normal.

    cheers, Maxim Vengerov

p.s. I was stoned the day it was recorded, therefore my countenance. I shouldn't smoke so much.

  • This is Vengerov, the teacher!

  • EXTRAORDINARIO

  • so creazy. no one can compare with him.when i heard his play,i won't like to hear anyone's

  • where is this? it isn't a studio? but there are mics everywhere?

  • There are mics because it IS a studio. no?

  • love that permanent surprised look on his face

  • Very good, has anyone heard the recording on Naxos label with Dong Suk Kang. That is a superb version, very fluid sounding with a lot of panache.

  • i love vengerov!!!!!!i thinks he's absolutely amazing!!i think i have a cd with im playing saint saens....like an angel

  • He's frickin' amazing. Too bad he looks like a tool when he plays.

  • lotsa emotion going on there :O very musical...i think..i play the cello but any musician can tell? nice job

  • Vengerov, Sharp, Virtuoso!!!

    Ever amazing!

  • fantastic.

  • That was just awesome. Thanks for posting this. ;-)
