youre right that selfish one is like a motown type of mold not only Smokey wouldve wrote for Mary Wells but Brenda Holloway and the Marvelettes and Diana Ross& the Surpremes whom Smokey for them and Kim Weston Jackie Ross is she mustve be related to Diana Ross

2 dances going round the nations with the same beat that's a combination...good timing and a finger poppin........jerk and twine...exact same lead in as this song.
OMG, I was 14 and in the ninth grade when this came out in 1964 (do the math). Simply love it. I went in my time machine for a brief moment and was in another world. Brings back soooooo many pleasant memories.
My cousyn Lolita went to B MORE to visit her father. When she came back to East NY Brooklyn she bought this record back with her.Usually we heard the latest records and dances at Coney Island at the ride the hymalayer.I know I spelled the name of that ride wrong.
I was also in the Navy 1964-1967 when this and "Just be True" came out. We played this one and "Just be True" and "Are You Ready" and the "Temps" all day long on the base in Taipei.
This was one of my absolute favorite tunes when I was a teen. I used to play it and the flip side over and over. Thanks for the post. Still sounds great...always will.
Too bad they can't make good music like this nowadays. Before Motown started up its own Detroit operation, they did lease time over at Chess in Chicago. Great posting!! (The French horn solo on "Foolish One" sounds a little like the jazz ballad "Tenderly".)
A little trick arrangers and/or producers were fond of back then..slipping in a sliver of a standard in the opening and bridge of a song like "Tenderly" here...Smokey Robinson pulled it off slipping in a bit of "Canadian Sunset" on Mary Wells' "My Guy"
What a beautiful song. It would climb to the number eleven spot on the billboard charts in 1964. Definitely sounds like a Motown type of song. I compare her to a Mary Wells. Had she been a Motown artist she would have gained a whole lot more fame and a string of hits made just for her. What say you out there in 'You Tube Land'!!
Hey Steve: very nice intro for, and analysis of , the styles and arrangements of these great Jackie Ross classics - esp. "Selfish One"! Just added it to my faves! Thanks.
much THANKS for posting this! 'Selfish One' is one of the best songs I ever heard. that voice ~ W-O-W! alotta great memories come back just from listening to this classic again.

Nice intro. I agree. Could easily have been done by Brenda Holloway at Motown. Chess, Argo and Cadet really cranked them out then.

"Everything But Love" is the exact same track used on "Jerk and Twine" which was released later.

Chess/Argo records was really cranking out some sweet soul records in the sixties.
The Radiants, Fontella Bass, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Billy Stewart, Etta James, Mitty Collier, etc.
