All of his lead work was with two fingers, for cords he was able to use the third finger and thumb. And with altered cords first used by Freddie Green in big band he had it all going on.
@allenlewis due to a slight disability on my right hand, i play actually like that , tech wise. im proud to be able to play with the same kind of technique as him. :) although in a tad different style/musical context. :)
... practise, practise, practise and again practise!
Django spent more then 1 1/2 years in hospital after his accident ... he just used his time intensely with disregarded faith and power to achieve this …
rpizell: You won't hear playing like this ever again because Reinhardt was unique. Even if you hear someone similar one has to keep in mind they 're playing without disability. Django went on to influence every other great player though like Wes Montgomery & Kenny Burrell.
it's because when he was young the ring and pinky fingers on his left hand were horribly burned in a campfire. If you notice, they're not much but bony knubs, and there's quite a bit of scar tissue on his hand. He could use them to some extent, but some things were just easier for him to use only two fingers to play.
It wasn't a campfire, it was the caravan that he lived in that burned down, he recieved serious burns over a third of his body and could only use his burnt fingers from then on in chords. I can't believe he didn't get RSI in his able fingers!
Yes, according to Charles Delauney's book on Django the caravan was filled with paper flowers that Django's wife used to create. It caught light and DR rescued his wife from the blaze.(he was 18 yrs old then) Drs wanted to amputate his fingers and left leg but he refused. Took him over a year to recuperate.
It's crazy but almost the same thing happened to Les Paul, whose wife flipped over the car they were traveling in while he was sick and severely damaged his shoulder and hand. Dr's wanted to amputate, took him over a year for it to heal. Not comparing Les to Django, because that's not fair but both master of the six strings.
cactaceous: Yes, you're absolutely right. I think that was around 1948 or so when Les Paul had that accident. Les was a genius also in every way. It was an absolute miracle how he survived and even got the docs to set his arm back in permanent guitar playing position.
You could tell in his early recordings that Les was extremely influenced by Django and had met him a few times.
thesethreekings: I've been told by people that knew Django (e.g. Ivor Mairants) that he was always in constant pain..at least, the left side of his body was and he walked with a limp.
the sound is taken from a recording done in London just after the war called Echoes Of France usind two english rhyth. guitariste and a bass player called Collridge Goode
It is playable, but try to play it the way he did, with just the middle and index fingers. Django's left hand was crippled in a fire, as a result, he lost use of his pinky and ring fingers.
yeah, it seems that way, but if you think about it, there was a great depressionand then a world war. But really, look at our selves today, I mean, everything is computers now, I myself complain and yet I am a victim of it. I do wish we were in simpler times
We'll never know but that could be my uncle Jimmy, then stationed at SHAEF headquarters at war's end, dancing in the beginning of this clip. That's what he looked like and this was his music alright.
"Oh look, priceless rare footage of Django, let's cut away to some ration coupons!" AAAARGH!!!! Still, a few seconds is better than nothing. Thanks for posting! ;)

The devil saw how well Django played and got jealous, so he took two of his fingers off him to even things out a little.

Some people dance the floor with their two feet. Django danced the fretboard with with his two fingers as though they were the feet of Fred Astair.
That's determination and dedication in spite of his accident.
Would be interesting to see some of today's best guitar players play with two fingers tied.
