@caucasianlarry I agree. Tommy Smith is the man, as far as I'm concerned. Not just because he's a great player (although he is) but because he's put so much back into the music in terms of teaching, setting up a label, starting the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra etc. And his playing just gets better and better.
I think this is from his own composition, Spirit of the Fallen Angel. He describes it himself as his most evil piece :-) and this solo bit is near the middle, where he's been getting crazier and crazier, so it is justified in context.

This type of jazz is not my taste but, on ballads, Smith is the best by far since the passing of Stan Getz.
