I love how reserved she is. Obviously humble and appreciative, but not overly so like Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet. She doesn't make a huge deal out of it, and I love that. She doesn't act for awards.

Fuck you Cate Blanchett...take your bullshit eco moral bullshit and go drink mineral water and meander about your pretentious Sydney theatre company friends....the rest of Australia does not want a carbon tax levied by a government who have announced zero plans for direct investment of this tax windfall into alternative power generation. The government lied their way into power and we do not live in a country where celebrities and minority groups determine national policy.
@danielmy08 and just what the hell does Cate's Oscar-win speech have to do with her role in the carbon tax debate? You picked the wrong forum to wax faux-lyrical Aussie political, "bullshit eco moral bullshit"? sounds like a liberal backbencher....
What's with the thumbs downs? And by the way, Blanchett deserves an oscar FOR EVERYTHING she's nominated in... especially in 1998 For "Elizabeth".. shame that Paltrow won (I like her though), but Blanchett in "ELIZABETH" is one of the best performances in film history of all time... that face that her character portrays in the movie when she gives her speech to the religious figures... sigh
Closer is one of my favorites, and not only was Natalie stunning in the film, but she outshined everybody in the film. She out-fucking-shined Julia Roberts. That takes talent. Still, Cate was incredible in The Aviator.
Closer is one of my favorites, and not only was Natalie gorgeous in the film, but she outshined everyone in the film. She Outshined Julia Roberts. How the hell is that even possible?
The speaker should have say: "This is the first Academy Award and second nomination for Cate Blancett. She was previously robbed by Gwyneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love".
Cate is brilliant! I think she is my favorite actress of this generation. I love her so much. She deserved it, even the others are so good too. Well, we have some fantastic actresses today, what is a great thing, because is difficult find people like them.
Why did se have a 'leading role' nomination for this movie..., she just appears a few times, and the story is not plotted around her (but Dicaprio)... I don't know why they give 'leading' roles nominations sometimes to actors withthe need of fame and glamour, but other times, and 'supporting' nominations to others in great leading roles (as Javier Bardem (No country for old man), or Tatoum Oneal in Paper Moon)...
I think she doesnt deserved this oscar for this movie... not a leading role.
I know I want her to get an Oscar too. It's just that there's always someone better nominated with her. Just the timing. I also want Annette Bening and Toni Collette to be Oscar winners too by the time they leave this world.
Am I the only one whom Cate Blanchett doesn't suit in Cate Hepburn coat? C.B. is great actress no doubt about this, but this role was over her shouders. I didn't find Cate Hepburn in her, sorry...
i love cate blanchett more than words can describe but her performance in the aviator was NOT oscar worthy. she should've won for elizabeth, notes on a scandal, i am there, and so many other films but sophie okonedo and laura linney were robbed in this instance. i'm sorry cate, i do love you and all your films.
Although I have seen Cate Blanchett in other movies, in the Aviator and in Robin Hood with Russel Crowe I've started to notice her. I can not explain or find the right words for it.
For me she's not the woman you drool over at the mouth about but she has this thing, this quality. (No pun intended she's a great actress.)
Cate Blanchett leaves me cold. She is technically very accomplished, brilliant even, but there isn't one element of truth in any of her performances. You can see the mechanism at work and that makes for very disengaged and uncomfortable viewing. She's all about technique and superficiality.
@JohnnyContagious People used to say the same thing about Meryl Streep ...I think their reputations make people pay more attention to their methods, she has an incredible technique and can shade a performance with complex detail and nuance, whether it requires some level of self-consciousness I don't know, but I do know after seeing her on stage in 'Streetcar ' the depth, complexity and variety of feelings she was able to reveal in a gesture or a line was astonishing to watch
@BigDeanoSyd Comparisons with Meryl Streep are ludicrous and do her no favours - humanity bursts forth from every Streep performance. I do take your point about stage acting, though. I have never seen her on stage, but I would imagine that the technical proficiency that makes her so unwatchable on the screen would make her captivating on the stage.
@JohnnyContagious I'm sorry but that's a complete lie. How can you watch any of her performances and not see the brilliant real-life woman behind it? There's no way you can draw up that kind of acting ability if it's all coming from nothing.
@ItWasTheChair13 No, it's not a lie, merely an opinion. And if you can see the 'brilliant real-life woman' behind her performances then surely that's a failing on her responsibility as an actress?
Couldn't disagree with you more. I've never understood this feeling of coldness as I get quite a natural warmth to many of her characters and her as a person. I thought she exquisitely gave warmth to a character whom we all attach a colder nature to, Queen Elizabeth I. No, she's MUCH more than technique, you just need to research furthur, I think you may surprise yourself. ;)
@fumbler22 My girlfriend is a huge Cate Blanchett fan, so I've seen all but a couple of her films and therefore I have no need to research 'further'. :) She falls into the same category of actress that accommodates women like Emma Thompson, Helen Bonham Carter, and Nicole Kidman. Women who are quite obviously performing. Cate Blanchett's technical gifts are many, but it's acting by numbers.
what a category with Blanchet,Portman,Linney...I wish Natalie wins this year and Laura in the next years...she's amazing!i don't think that Blanchett gave her best performance in Aviator, but the academy understood the horrible mistake they did in 1999 and gave the oscar to Paltrow instead of her...

@jckfmsincty Imitation or reinterpretation? They bring their modern views to an old character, allowing modern audiences to relate and experience that emotion.
I love how reserved she is. Obviously humble and appreciative, but not overly so like Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet. She doesn't make a huge deal out of it, and I love that. She doesn't act for awards.

Cate is great. But, is an imitation of a famous person really creative acting?

yeah this is her second Oscar! She was phenomenal as Elizabeth.
What I love about her is that she speaked quick and didn't cry etc... I hate these long pathetic speeches...

She owns just 1 statue, but this is her 2nd Oscar.
