alan1414, you do not "hear" TONTO on those albums, just Odyssey and MiniMoog. They worked together, but did not record together. In fact, the TONTO creators never said they recorded together. Berry Gordy and Stevie have no reason to "remove" Tontos creators from the credits
wonder ripped off these two guys and when the two guys left wonder he did not produce another top lp i wonder why steve.wonder you owe these guys millions in royalities.
All that footage of Stevie.... where can we see it?! I hope that gets released someday. That stuff where he's playing the Drums and singing Living for the City etc... man.
what song can I hear tonto on? I dont see tonto credits on any of my Wonder albums, BUT Im still impressed with TONTO! (I know he used minimoog and 2600)
@grabngonuts TONTO was used on every song from Music of my Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale. The majority of Songs in the Key of Life were also made up of already recorded TONTO and Stevie songs (I believe). They were incredible together, unfortunately it all got a bit sour when the two guys from TONTO realised they weren't getting enough credit for the albums. (That's not to say they were the sole reason these albums were amazing. Stevie is a genius.)
I'm a massive Stevie fan but it's a shame that Cecil and Margoullef didn't get more recognition for their part in his best albums, as well as financial recompense.
@ooarrlatvian Stevie gave them both the uPmost respect & even said that they both should've got co-producer of the year along with him! So what the hell are you trying 2 say? Stevie paid them very well for their work, again I say,wtf are you babbling about?
Malcolm is the original mad scientist rocker, and then there's Polli, equally a mad scientist in ceramic art, and then there's Moon Pup, the mad scientist deejay, an entire family of mad scientists...Topanga hasn't been the same since they left.
(cont.)And I don't begrudge these guys getting acknowledgment for all their work & creativity.Who knows what S.Wonder would want/expect from collaborators at any time in particular ? Actors definitely appreciate being pushed by other actors or directors (sometimes-ha!) esp. when going for a more extreme emotional quality. But this is just the quibbling of a big Stevie fan whose also very aware of how often people can be VERY aware of their OWN contribution to a project & so that gets emphasized.
THIS IS GREAT. It's real nice to see Malcolm Cecil and Bob Margouleff after all these yrs. , to finally put a face on these dudes.
This whole clip clearly everyone is talking about Stevie's GREATNESS .
But it is a little weird to think they needed to "play" that way to get his vocal quality that way.I want to think that they could've just told him to "go for it" more. This would be want you want from producers , to be another set of ears for feedback. But that is how directors often work w/actors
Stevie plays the trap set (drums to you) and most all instrumentation in preproduction. The really strange thing is so few people have viewed this video, and this video changed the sound of funk in a giant way. Vanilla Ice gets more views than this. It's a sad time we're in m'friends..
It's from a BBC documentary from a few years back. I think it was a documentary on funk or soul music - it was on either BBC Two or Four, so you could try their archives.
Doing a quick search, it might have been called 'Soul Deep'.
DON'T READ THIS! in 1945 a man was wallking down the streets at 4:34am no one was arround. it was pitch black. sudenly! a man came running down and killed him by stabbing him. the man then took hime somwere and no one evere new were the man took him.
in 2000 a girl found him in a bath tub in a swamp. unless you post this comment to 10 othere videos. the dead man will hunt you for 5 years. do it before 1 hour. hurry
Bax: I never knew TONTO was used by Stevie either. I just thought he went straight from his Arp 2600 to the Yamaha GX-1. And one other thing: Secret Life of Plants is under-rated.
Well, you learn something every day. I never knew Tonto's Expanding Headband were technicians on SW's music. I would recommend Tonto's own music to lovers of electronic stuff. And I never knew that Malcolm Cecil was a British guy!!!
thanks for that clip, changes your perspective. And WHAT a musician was Stevie Wonder! Can't get enough of his playing. Cool to see the dodgy-hairdo tec blokes having their work recognised too.
It should be recognised that Jeff Beck contributed to the creation of Superstion during a Jam session with Steve - this was acknowledged by Steve in presenting Jeff with a beautiful song "cause we've ended as lovers - which Jeff NAILS TO THE FLOOR!
so what... are you trying to take credit away from Stevie? I realize whites have made enormous contributions to soul music BUT Superstition would not exist WITHOUT Steveland Hardaway Judkins Stevie Wonder!!!!!!!!!!
no one is taking anything away from Stevie, its more like they are showing some other folks who had a hand in the music too, this is what great producers do
I just watched Phantom of the Paradise the other night (great movie) and realized that TONTO is in! It's the Phantom's booth where he sings and plays piano with Paul Williams watching. TONTO is the coolest thing ever!
I must say I am terribly jealous of the generation that grew up and were in college during the time of Stevie, Aretha, James, Smokey, Stylistics etc. In other words, my parents. They did however keep all their albums especially for us to listen to (you can also tell when they got married because there's two copies of each album, its hilarious) so my ear for stuff is a little different than my peers.
Damn the 60's produced many musical geniuses in the 70's. Ver lucky to be a teen in those days. Stevie took R&B into yet another direction. A that blessed voice. What a talent.
The hardest thing about Stevie Wonder is picking a favorite album or song. I swear I switch from Talking Book to Innervisions but for now, my fav is Innervisions. My fav song on their besides Visions and Living for the City is Jesus Children of America. I love the message and the music. Thanks for posting this by the way.
my faverouite albums are Fulfillingness First Finale and Secret life of plants at the moment. The best Tracks are "Too shy to say", "they won't go where I go", and "Same old story" and Ecclesiastes!
That was...AWESOME!! No wonder those those are my favorite Stevie records. They were made in Electric Ladyland. And, of course, it's great to see Stevie making Innervisions, which is on my short list of essential albums.
I'd love to see the rest of this. I'm curious if there's more footage of Stevie from this period.

& they are totally giving Stevie respect."We worked him" may just be the expression producers/ conductors/directors use w/ actors/musicians.
It's all edited interviews for a broad subject . We don't know all of what else Malcolm & Bob may have said.
I'd love to hear more . I am totally fascinated by the process/work that went into making those albums.
And creativity in general.
What a great example these cats are of that. Stevie.Malcolm. Bob.Thank you
Thnx to the doc. makers
