I greatly appreciate the comments of those who can explain just why this is such a gr8 drum solo. Had not heard it since I was a lad in my teens in Mex City circa 1968 ... instrumental music was hugely popular among Mexican general audiences. Shadows, Santo & Johnnie, Ventures, got huge play down there. There were entire YEARS when "see you in my ..." was no. 1 requested song of radio station (Radio Capital, AM band) that played teen music.
The drum solo by Tony Meehan is the best I've ever heard. It has substance, variety, clarity, hard, soft knocks, smoothness and the drummer also brings us along to see him in his drums by doing the soft part in suspense and then moves us to a climax with a series of hard knocks before the guitars set in. He was indeed a very good drummer and a second to none.
Tony wasn´t precise at all , he was very raw , and unpolished. But my god I studied Drums , and is educated , at music school , not that it matters ,but BRIAN IS THE BEST DRUMMEROF THE TWO. Period. But as I said , Good Solo here from Tony no Question.
@Dionysosable But for me he was the best drummer for the Shads cos after he and Jet went, they lost something ; a kind of edge and danger about their music ; this is very exciting and dynamic as is a lot of their music 1960 to 62. Little B i like a lot less than this
I think Brian & tony were as good as each over brian's "Little B" and Tony's "see you in my drums & bongo blues" Sadly missed tony and i will never forgret what i learned from you R.I.P.
BRIAN BENNETT IS A GENIUS AND SO WAS TONY MEEHAN. i think this solo was played on a 1958 AJAX KIT. he later got a GRETCH . but i just love the fantastic clean hard hitting sound he gets
Tony was a far better drummer than Brian Bennet by miles! Tony was an absolutely precise drummer to the end, not like Brian who as far as I am concerned was slack! Listen to Tone on the snare and cymbals, he was an amazing drummer! Jet Harris and Tony were the back bone of the Shadows, absolutely NO doubt! !
A good drum solo but compare it to Brian Bennett's Little B on the next Shadows album and it is a little way behind. Brian was the best drummer no question.
Good Drum solo ! Tony Meehan was a good Drummer , but after Brian Bennet got behind the Drums , The Shadows sounded more professional , just my opinion. This solo is good though , but compared to litlle B , it doesn´t make it !! Tony didn´t match Bennetts Skill as a Drummer Neither Technical or musical. But He was a great Drummer of his age and that time in the early 60 ties. But Hats of for Tony , Good Solo.
You are the God!! Tony is a great drummer...think when was this recorded!!!
Many people are thinking....10....20...30..yrs ago....Hellooooo!! We are thinking 1958/9...Tony was an incredible ..talenred...gifted musician...Thank you Tony for the lessons...S
This was a Gem of a Drum Solo way back in the 1960s. Tony was certainly a most inspiring drummer, clean Drum strokes and rolls played on a tightly tuned drums which meant the drummer had had to be masterful at executing these strokes using his wrist-movements rather than rely on loose-skin-tuned drums especially when Double-Stroke (Paradiddles) were being played. Tony was my inspiration and felt really sad when I heard he had died in 2005. His spirit will live on forever. HE WAS A GREAT ARTIST.
Grandiosa!!!
his snare sounds sooo good. Used to drum to this guy when i was about ten, first inspirational drummer i ever listened to
