Iraq failed to destroy Iranian air force when they carried out pre emptive airstikes against Iran. Saddam's army had suffered heavy losses, so did Iran, but due to that, saddam was forced to reposition his troops on the Iraqi border, rather then leave them in Iran. No clear victory was achieved by Iraq.

Irans capability to fight on, and counter attack supprised the USA, so they allowed Iraq to use chemical and biological weapons to stop Iran from taking over parts of Iraq. So in fact, Iran fought against Saddam,USA,UK & France - 4VS1. The French carried out airstrikes on behalf of Iraq..Even with so much support and heavy weapons, Iraq was not able to get a clear victory.

@rsstrowners Iraq did not win the war. Iraq had taken small parts of Iran, But when Iran came out with a stiff counter attack on the war front, Iraqi army was forced to retreat. Iraq failed to destroy Iranian air force when they carried out pre emptive airstikes against Iran. Saddam's army had suffered heavy losses, so did Iran, but due to that, saddam was forced to reposition his troops on the Iraqi border, rather then leave them in Iran. No clear victory was achieved by Iraq.
