Yeah, Ike's Aether and the mercenary sprite critical animation looks remarkably similar. However, they aren't the same thing (notice how Gerik taps his giant sword on his own shoulder a few times as an indicator before throwing the sword up in the air and land the fatal blow while Ike simply throws his sword up in the air and fast fall).

But you guys should try SSBB, it's really good. And yes, I do enjoy RPGs (particularly Sacred Stones, it was too easy).
