OMG!!! I´ve just seen that movie with Johny Depp and it was so hilarious! So I thought I´ll check out if it was true and... god these films really exist! Just wow...
It takes a real genius to write dialogue this bad. I`m serious. This is hard to do on purpose.
The best bad dialogue comes from writers who think they are doing good work. It takes a rare genius to not let a profound lack of talent get in the way of producing a truly good bit of bad writing. This is the best bad writing I have ever heard. It is `worse`than stuff that is twice as bad. And that`s saying something.
Can someone please explain how and why Bela is threatening and bitching at all of those pedestrians in the stock footage at the bottom of the screen?? Did he turn into a ghost? LOL. I guess only Ed Wood could tell us how this was SUPPOSED to work, huh?
I feel that this is one if not the most interesting picture that Ed Wood ever did.People often feel the need to say negative things about others choices in life and that is a shame.Let your freak flag fly Eddy!!!!!!
Well, there's more editing and camera movement than I thought there'd be from looking at Burton's movie. From that you get the impression everything is just long locked off shots.
i cant help it this film is terrible and sooo damn funny. but still ed wood did what he wanted and expressed him self some things which people dont do today and for that i applaud you mr wood. (lol mr. wood)
In my view, the movie is great.Although it's not made with great director skills it is packed with truthful messages,it's honest. Some things in the movie might not connect to one another when it comes to sense, but when it comes to telling it like you feel it Ed Wood did a great job.He had a story,a dream and he tried making it happen. This isn't so much about the movies he made,it's about him,the man that follows his desire to be an artist with no limitations. How can you not love such people
Aw, come on! This movie isn't a bad movie! There are big budget movies that are worse because they were maid for idiots to make money. This had heart! Ed Wood had passion! That's what makes a good movie!
Just one question: Why did they show the radiator at 6:44? Was it just a random shot, or did they make a goof and leave it in the movie? Dolores Fuller (who played "Barbara", Glen's girlfriend) passed away recently. She wrote the Elvis hit "Rock-a-Hula Baby" (from the movie "Blue Hawaii"), among other songs.
Time changes and also the opinion changes of what is a bad movie. Today, after such a relatively long time of cinema, even this kind of movies belong to a genre which allows us to be more open-minded about it. I'd call Ed Wood's ability to make actually significant movies out of crap topics outstanding.
@murcielago06gt Watch it 15 times! You've got to be kidding, haha. From everything I've come to learn about Ed Wood, whatever his shortcomings as a player in the movie industry, he marched to his own drummer.
If Wood was trying to depict the accurate lifestyle of cross dressers and transvestites, as said in the the opening text, why does he choose to have it from the point of view of Bella Lugosi's character?
@jkilts Because Bela Lugosi is basically God in this film overseeing everything and everyone. As you can see at 4:26 when he ruminates on people "One is wrong because he does right, and one is right because he does wrong. PULL DE STRING! dance to dat which one is created for" and "A new day has begun, a new life has begun." "A life has ended"
These theological ruminations Ed Wood gives us are right up there with Ingmar Bergman's greatest films on the purpose of life and faith in our world.
In his last movies, he resigned himself in to directing porn( BAD porn at that). You would think after all the chances he got, he would have gotten one right? How did he ever convince anyone to back his movies after so many failures? I know in the movie it hints that he tricked ppl into giving him money. In real life a movie company would need to see your past works before they would give you a cent. He never got alot of $ to make a movie with, but he got about a years living pay for a movie
If U like chicks with DICKS you cant go wrong with MistressMaggie12 or his/her brother/sister legmodelroni! The best of both world i'm "shore", huh mags!!! ;o) *big smiles*
I want to laugh at how bad this movie is, I really do... But it seems good for some reason... I think it's because the last three movies I saw were AVP2, Battlefield Earth and The Room... Bad movie marathons really drain you of energy...
to be fair to him this movie actually has a fairly strong central idea about intolerance and although its made ridiculously and acted terribly, there is a message in there
Truly, this is something. Ed Wood, at least, was trying to make a point, to express his believes. He was a man that didn't take crap from anybody and always made his films in his own way. Worst director...maybe, but I think he was a great man!

i havent seen the movie but honestly i have to applaud ed wood to even consider making the movie about transexuality. homosexuality and different races were frowned upon so think about how hard it must have been to make a movie about transexuality?
@sarahball12 I agree completely. In those days, as you expressed, homosexuality. as well as other queer subject, were seen as extremely taboo. I think he was a visionary and he was taking a huge risk. Some people do say this is a bad movie, but, like you. I disagree. Back then, very little was known about transgender issues. He tapped into all the resourses he had and did his best. Grant it, it does go a bit out there, but so did other films like "Reefer madness", for example.
@sarahball12 btw, I am a female to male transman (in other words, a transsexual male). Not many people know about us. We're not as visible as mtfs(male to females.
say what you like about ed wood but the man made the movies he wanted to make and i would rather watch a flawd film made with lots of enthusiasm than a mondane manufactured movie like transformers or the last air bender or 90% of the crap thats made today
Did y'all know the main title music here was also the original title music first the first season of TV's "Lassie" with Tommy Rettig? Both bought it from a stock music library (it was originally from a B movie in the Dr. Kildare series from the 40's composed by later cartoon composer Bill Lava.) In any case, shortly after this movie was released, Lassie & Jeff on TV suddenly got a new theme song!
I can't really laugh at this anymore.when i saw tim burton's ed wood(I know that they weren't exact with the facts)now i feel bad for ed and bela.and everyone really.
It's funny how the inspector greets the doctor with a statement of respect for his time and yet blathers on about nonsense for minutes, going off into wild abstract tangents. I thought the inspector valued the doctor's time ;-)
When a man is so dim (dumb) that he can write such absurd dialogue without realising how absurd it is, that is, indeed, very sad, but perhaps this very dimness prevents him from feeling he is a failure,
the burgermeister (mayor) of Berlin, Germany, named "Klaus Wowereit", is a homosexual transvestite, too, and so was the mayor of Hamburg, Germany, a "Ole van Beust", and the mayor of Paris, France, is a transvestite, too (I have forgotten his name), and the lady minister of Iceland (the island with the vulcanic ash cloud) is a Lesbian transvestite too, she has short hair and a bitter face. So Ed Wood was only ahead of his time!
everyone (puppeteer) is the master of their own destiny (puppets)... pull the strings so as to control your destiny and bring it wherever you want it to be.... i get it now....
Looking through the opening "credits," I found it curious that it included a "Music Consultant," rather than "composer," or "director." I have no idea what a "consultant" would be needed for, unless the music he used in this movie was canned, and he needed one to inform Mr. Wood Jr. regarding which ones were public domain pieces and which were not. I can't imagine anyone actually scoring music for this stink-bomb.
for a film about transsexuality to be made in the fifties, this film really had balls (no pun intended). i hold ed wood responsible for people like tim burton, rob zombie, david lynch, and for a personal reason, introducing me to bela lugosi, the best horror actor to live.
His movies were shit but you have to give the guy credit, he sure was persistant in fulfilling his dreams. Nothing stopped this guy. It's kind of inspiring.
It's terrible. It's awful. It's ridiculous. It's bizarre. It's...WONDERFUL. hahaha. I've finally gotten a chance to see this famous clunker. What fun. Thanks for sharing.
I cast local TV commercials, and I must say that aside from the script, which is absolutely AWFUL, the set direction and the shooting/editing is not that bad. I think (I can't believe I'm saying this) Ed Wood might have gotten a bad rep. This is just not that horrible. He had a nurse in this scene, and it would take me two days in our podunk town to even find that uniform!
This is actually, in the very least, a BILLION times more watchable than "High School Musical 3" or "Hannah Montana"...screw it, the entire Disney Channel lineup...In a way, It takes a certain genius to make a movie bad enough to be considered memorable..it's like a really bad painting you can't help but look at over and over again..most bad movies leave you pissed off that you wasted your time but Ed Wood's movies at least leave you with a feeling that you learned something valuable...
Ed Wood's films are so hilarious that they are better than most of todays real commedies. Ed Wood is probably one of my favorite directors and writers simply because his movies are so fucked up and bad that there is a weird sense of entertainment to them that I have yet to experience in any other film to date.
OMG!!! I´ve just seen that movie with Johny Depp and it was so hilarious! So I thought I´ll check out if it was true and... god these films really exist! Just wow...

When you first see Bela, you can see the camera shadow pan away on the one side of the chair

Immensely entertaining and ahead of it's time. Better than Citizen Kane, which puts me to sleep. Rosebud this, Orson!!!!! "Pull the string" !!!!!!

Chaplin's A King In New York--that should be 1957.
kfarm2001 2 years ago
No, it actually did come out in '53. Perhaps that was added later(?).

I believe there is a reference to this film in Chaplin's A King In New York (1950).

Dolores Fuller was Dating Ed Wood during this!

for a film about transsexuality to be made in the fifties, this film really had balls (no pun intended). i hold ed wood responsible for people like tim burton, rob zombie, david lynch, and for a personal reason, introducing me to bela lugosi, the best horror actor to live.

Bela Lugosi...That's all I got to say !!

Oh, man... even though it's a incoherent mess of a movie, at least it's better than all those Jason Friedburg and Aaron Seltzer "parody" films.

His movies were shit but you have to give the guy credit, he sure was persistant in fulfilling his dreams. Nothing stopped this guy. It's kind of inspiring.

It's terrible. It's awful. It's ridiculous. It's bizarre. It's...WONDERFUL. hahaha. I've finally gotten a chance to see this famous clunker. What fun. Thanks for sharing.

Why you're saying it's terrible, it is great!
NaNoMetr2333 2 years ago 5
I cast local TV commercials, and I must say that aside from the script, which is absolutely AWFUL, the set direction and the shooting/editing is not that bad. I think (I can't believe I'm saying this) Ed Wood might have gotten a bad rep. This is just not that horrible. He had a nurse in this scene, and it would take me two days in our podunk town to even find that uniform!

This is actually, in the very least, a BILLION times more watchable than "High School Musical 3" or "Hannah Montana"...screw it, the entire Disney Channel lineup...In a way, It takes a certain genius to make a movie bad enough to be considered memorable..it's like a really bad painting you can't help but look at over and over again..most bad movies leave you pissed off that you wasted your time but Ed Wood's movies at least leave you with a feeling that you learned something valuable...

i love how the very first shot has the cameras shadow in it for the first few seconds

Ed Wood's films are so hilarious that they are better than most of todays real commedies. Ed Wood is probably one of my favorite directors and writers simply because his movies are so fucked up and bad that there is a weird sense of entertainment to them that I have yet to experience in any other film to date.
