While I'll be the first to admit Michael Steele brought me here, got to give it up for Vicki Peterson... like Michael, always about what's best for the song, not what gets the most attention... anyhoo, thx for the chance to hear/watch this.
i just discovered michael's full name is Michael Susanne Steele. pretty feminine actually for someone with a guy's name. and very very beautiful. lovely voice.
I am 59 and I finally discovered the tremendously wonderful group Big Star; I checked the CDof their 1st 2 L.P.s from the library. 5 stars!! for both LP's I couldn't believe how great Sept.Gurls was, I played it 10 times in a row. The suggestion box sent me hear and now I find that the Bangles were for real. Beautiful cover of S. Gurls, and all of the other songs I found from this concert were awesome. Beautiful musicianship. And U ladies too! To discover BigStar and Bangles in the same week!!
This is freaking good, it's hard to believe this is a live performance. Anyone who's ever picked up an instrument would recognize that to sound this good live is truly a near impossible feat. I have a total new found respect for these women. This performance is as close to perfect as one could ever hope for in a band situation. They definitely demonstrate that they were "a band" if there ever was one. Oh, and the fact that they're hot doesn't hurt either!
@gregorheinrich At that time they WERE! Aw, never mind. You had to have been there to appreciate them, ESPECIALLY Micki, and their hair, talent etc. Little Susanna was like the dashboard hula girl...a gimmick. I think they would have been around STILL if there was more focus on Micki, and Vicki and Debbie, instead of the short little Poople Hoffs. Just my thoughts.
This song is one of the best bangles ever did and it should be an single ...Michael Steele has the bands best voice..so sensitive and hurtfull but sexy
her song "somethin to belive in" for the bands third album in 89 is one of the best songs radio ever played....many critics says Steeles song always was the best and that she is the best member
sad that she left the band in 05 (horrible year) but she is on myspace ofthen
very nice solo- Vickie was absolutely one the technically best & most tasteful female lead players of the era. this kept the feel of Chilton's style with a little added open string Harrison beatleyness
Lets thank pretzelFarmer for putting 16 rare Bangles clips here! I hit the favorite button 10 seconds after it started! These chicks are all excellent ! Why micks voice wasn't used more in other songs is a mystery ! Thanks Pittsburgh Pa.
@rodneyhackenflash The rumor, and it is an ugly one, is that Ms. Steele's talents went underutilized as the proximate result of her preference to not sleep with certain production and record distribution persons affiliated with the band. Lord knows she can play that axe, and her voice calls down the angels from heaven. She is also absolutely gorgeous. Other than that I think she sucks.
@lebarosky I hope that by inference, that doesn't mean the other three succumbed to "horizontal bop" pressures. I hate to admit it, but probably most guys are horn dogs at heart, but I'd hate to think anything like the stereotypical chauvinistic "sexual favors" were used to promote any one member's music/vocal/performance over another s. I prefer to believe that Vicki/Debbie/Susannah were the stronger writers/had more material. And yes, I miss Michael!
And this beautiful, (loved her sinve I was 14,..I am 38 now, and a musician myself) NEVER needs to look at her hands, as she walks this Bass, in so many gorgeous scales. SHE was the talent, Vicki the drive and the R&R baby,..Debbi,,.good solid drummer,..Susanna,..good voice in the mix of Harmony,..but um, what else??????
i feel like micheal steele has so much talent and i wish she was featured more than she was in the bangles..shes got a lovely voice...ive been playing bass since 85 and i obviously am still doing it...she is my fav girl bass player..i also liked kathy valentine's little bass line in the go gos head over heels..but i dont compare the 2 groups..bangles were more jingle jangle rickenbackers and paisley..where as go gos was more california rock and roll with a spalsh of punk lol.THANK you 4 the vid!
@sprintbass Early Bangles had a definite 60s vibe, some of it even a SoCal/surfer feel (Bitchin' Summer), but I agree the later airplay started to be more corporate/bubblegum. I liked Go Gos, but more for Charlotte Cafey's strat play over Kathy's bass.
thanks PretzelFarmer great clip

Vocal and bassplaing by Steele - and in total; a perfect song...
The Susanna's rhytm playing is really nice; her own beat on that strokes.....I suppose it - too - tells a lot of her character?
