This was one of the worst tornados in history, both for loss of life, destruction, and intensity. Rarely in history does a tornado of this intensity and size hit a major city. It had to be a high
E-F5 in intensity. You both were very lucky to have captured this incredible, but sad footage and escaped! It really reminds me of the horrible May 3 1999 Moore, Oklahoma tornado.
omg i would not even go that far to see a tornadoe like that or else i would need a bathroom every 5 mins because im so terrified of tornadoes you dont even no how bad (pretty bad) and im sorry you lost some close folks and i prey joplin is ok to this day.......................................
@camerondindy Mr. Piotrowski has been chasing storms for 30+ years, He's also from Oklahoma in case the phone number with the northeast OK (918) area code wasn't obvious.
i...just cant watch this...anymore...i just can't stand that the fact that i LOST MY BROTHER IN THIS DISASTER! IM ONLY 12 WHY MOTHER NATURE!!! I HATE YOU!
It makes me cry every time I drive through Joplin, it's a big open sore driving through it. I weep watching this video. You can hear in the beginning NO SIREN GOING ON!!! HOW HORRIBLE. Thank you Jeff and Kathryn for risking your life trying desperately for getting help for Joplin!!
This dvd is worth buying. Reality at it's best and sad at the same time. Thanks Jeff and Kathryn for making the footage public. The stories are well done as well.
@watcherman65 No official estimates as far as the exact wind speed have been given at this time. However, this tornado was rated as an EF5 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, which offers estimates on wind speed based upon a tornado's damage. The EF5 rating encompasses tornadoes with *estimated* wind speeds of over 200 mph.
seeing the city before hand in pictures.. then actually getting boots down over the summer in Joplin to help out was unbelievable i wish all the people in Joplin all of the best! That was by far the most catastrophic thing i have seen in my life. It will take a while to recover but the people of Joplin will hang tough and they will make it! Best of luck to Joplin! greetings from Illinois!
Jeff: your video gave me the biggest of the heebee-jeebees, ever.
Joplin, MO. I visited there back in July 1987. That you were able to record this 'alive' is amazing; what a heartbreak for the people of Joplin. Words cannot compare to the grief that these citizens had to deal with post-tornado.
I lost 2 friends and a man from our church was killed in. One friend was in one of the pizza huts that was destroyed, one had a church collapse on her, and the man was in the Academy parking lot with his sons and wife. His sons and wife survived. This is something I never want to see happen again..
@blueson7227 the sirens actually were going off for about 35 minutes before the first rain drop fell, and you can hear them in some parts of this video but it's extremely hard to hear over the backround noise in the video. Other videos you can clearly hear the sirens. The main issue here was many people didn't take the sirens seriously.
so when there is a tornado do all the cops go hide until its over?? i never heard one siren or saw one cop or amulance, at all in my block of 17th and conncecticut
@MrAdambresette Belton is far enough to have been away from the danger of THIS particular storm and tornado. I live just north of Joplin and was directly affected by this. 100+ miles pretty much puts you out of the affected areas.
i pray for those in joplin last week i drove through there and it has been cleaned up a lot adn lookes much better then it did right after when my dad voulantered to go down there with the st.louis city police department who he works for but theres still so much rebuilding to do
I live in Joplin and I was on my way to a birthday party for my friend Zoey and I saw it on the way so me along with a BUNCH of other people ran in a gas station and I saw some best friends that were on the way to the party and we all huddled up and prayed and we Bawled and Bawled! When we thought it was safe we came out but there was a HUGE GUST of wind blew and it slammed me on my car and hurt my friend real bad! Then we looked back and saw a monster. Now we are NOT scared of tornados!!!!! Bu
The lead time for the rotation in this storm (and thus the tornado warning) was 25 minutes. The tornado itself gave less than a minute of warning. This is why you need to take tornado warnings seriously, even if there is no tornado on the ground, or even no funnel (tornadoes can form without a funnel cloud) - it's the difference between minutes and seconds to save your hide.
I survived the F5 tornado in moore oklahoma in 1999, i lost my house and my dog, i hoped and prayed to God that id never see this kind of thing again.... you are all in my prayers
my step mom and two year old sister lived through the joplin tornado with no basement. we lived in front of the high school and our house is now nothing not even flooring
and my dad was at st johns working on the seventh floor surprisingly they all lived even our dog he was burried under our bath tub we lost our cat though:(
and kgracielu2005 is right nobody would stop and help that night
@iwantorlando05 No they didn't... I live in Carthage, Missouri...and we were watching the weather on tv. and The news went to a live tower cam and there was no tornado...just a lot of rain. Then when they went back to the tower cam after like 30 seconds the tornado was already ripping through the heart of Joplin. The people from the News station were freaking out. they had now warning that there was a tornado on the ground...
@RowdyCartwright Wrong. According to the NWS office in Springfield, the warning was issued around 5:17 PM that night. The first reports of the tornado came in around 5:41 PM. That makes the warning's lead time 24 minutes...more than plenty of time for one to get to shelter (and even bring some critical belongings). It's a really bad idea to wait until you see the tornado to take cover, as we learned that night.
@jbthornton15 on the contrary... yes there was a warning...meaning the is a chance a tornado could form.... the first reports of the tornado did come at 5 41....but the police and any other city official around here don't care what anybody in the community has to say... therefore the citizens of joplin and surrounding areas didn't get the warning until i was on topof them..
my god. i dont know how long u have been chasing but did the police listen to u about putting on the sirens? i live in a town that was almost completely leveled by a f4 and we were lucky to have only one fatality I believe.
where are all the cops,,do they go hide till later?? i came out of my house with no roof,,and 45 min later no sirens, nothing, just jerks comin thru lookin at the damage, no one stopping to ask if we needed help
I am so thankful me and my family (and everyone else!) is okay. My mother, me, and our dog, (we had no time to get the cats) were in our closet. We made it in with about a minute and thirty seconds to spare before a loud noise like a train started and our windows broke... Well so much for that house. :(
i was at 17th and connecticut, and have always taken weather warnings seriously,,and thought this would be a small tornado,,luckily my son was at his dads and the closet i originally hid in, i got out , as soon as the ceiling fell on me,,and then was at my bathroom door, thinkin i was gonna die, then got hit on my left side of my head into a bedroom, that door was closed, but was no longer there,,only one wall left no roof nothing,,but having problems with still dreaming iam in a tornado,
Me n my two children survived this... It doesnt look like home here anymore. the scariest part was afterwards walkin up from tha cellar an seeing everythin gone an not knowing wat to expect. Always keep Joplin n ur Prayers
this is sad when i saw this on t.v and i'm from st.louis i had to go down there and help.... its still look bad over there they need all the help they can get.
we were lucky too. we lived 2 blks from st johns. they told us the only reason our house and our neighbors on either side were still standing was because of the way our trees fell in the yard.
I have some family here and they were in this storm, they visited me here in NYC a few weeks ago and showed me this saying they realized it was a big tornado but they did not realize it was this big. And at about 1:41 they started crying seeing that they actually survived this monster. And at 1:51 it looks like nighttime but appearently it was only about 6:00. Gosh this is terrible.
I have lived just outside of Joplin my entire life. Thankfully my family was safe but, many weren't so lucky. It is totally unbelievable the massive destruction wrought by this storm. You have to see it in person and know how pretty the city was before. It will take a long time to recover. This is a heartbreaking video. I cry everytime I see it.
Jeff 1:27 Merciful GOD it's almost too hard to watch that and hear you talking. The pain was in your voice. One thing -- did it REALLY take that long for them to get the sirens on in the city? They were NOT going before this video started?!
My mother was in the area he past, she lost her home and cars. When we went to check on here and found her safe we started search and rescue, we found many dead.
I was on the phone with 911 until the cellular phone lost connection. Some of the cell towers were destroyed in the city making it almost impossible to reach anyone via cell phone during and after the tornado moved into Joplin.
Im putting this post up to try and prevent trolls from posting (ive been watching vids of this tornado and theres ALREADY people trolling) : Keep in mind that as this was filmed, as we watch this tornado, people were dying. We are watching 135 people lose their lives. So please, if you have any human decency of righteousness in you whatsoever, have some respect for the dead and dont intentionally post anything offensive. thank you. R.I.P. victims of the Joplin tornado. God bless you all.
the Moore Tornado was measured by Doppler on Wheels above ground level to have winds of 301 +/- 20mph and was rated F5 on the old Fujita scale, so its winds at ground level could've been considerably less. Joplin never had a measurement, and under the Enhanced Fujita scale, had an estimated windspeed of 205mph at ground level.
@BrownanDownable wrong there is no such thing as an EF6, only goes to EF5 because the damage of an EF5 is as bad as it gets and you couldnt differentiate between an EF5 or an EF6 or EF8 for that matter.

we were lucky too. we lived 2 blks from st johns. they told us the only reason our house and our neighbors on either side were still standing was because of the way our trees fell in the yard.

Thank God you are okay!

1:27 if it wasn't for that small patch of sky on the left you'd think it was just a huge cloud on the ground.

Jeff 1:27 Merciful GOD it's almost too hard to watch that and hear you talking. The pain was in your voice. One thing -- did it REALLY take that long for them to get the sirens on in the city? They were NOT going before this video started?!

So were you on with 911 when you were filming this?
pcsassy03 8 months ago
@pcsassy03 Yes,
I was on the phone with 911 until the cellular phone lost connection.

Joplin never had a measurement, and under the Enhanced Fujita scale, had an estimated windspeed of 205mph at ground level.
topthrilldragster20 8 months ago
@BrownanDownable wrong there is no such thing as an EF6, only goes to EF5 because the damage of an EF5 is as bad as it gets and you couldnt differentiate between an EF5 or an EF6 or EF8 for that matter.
