  • the squeak made me laugh and smile XD

  • Profesor is a periodic table Junkie :-)

  • Very interesting and nice explanation of the "Snow Chemistry"

  • I soo love your hair prof! thanks for this video. . it helps me a lot in understanding snow chem. . :)

  • "I once had a picnic in the north of England when a snowflake landed on my sleeve" blimey, so that's what makes mancunians so resilient "let's throw a pyjama party in the midst of a snow blizzard!" in the words of Frank Gallagher

  • Is there anything that Prof. Poliakoff doesn't have with a periodic table on it?

  • ...why was he having a picnic in the snow?

  • It squeeks!

  • I waited the entire video for a snowball to come hurtling towards the Professor.

  • How come no two snow flakes are the same?

  • He's precisely the sort you would want to see cast as a British Prof. Genius, likeable, and simply someone you would enjoy having as a teacher.

  • i love that umbrella genius

  • its a shame i never liked chemistry much. im more into the electronics side but i would have loved you as a teacher.

  • this guy is a certified don a unbrella with the periodic table in top

  • OMG the professor is a woman. heh heh whoops

  • I love that the Professors biggest concern with unfreezing snow in public is that it would be inefficient, not that arming public servants with FLAME THROWERS would be dangerous.

  • It's amazing what one can take for granted - I live in Toronto, Canada and I can see snow crystals for at least 4 months out of the year. As a friend once said to me, in Toronto we have pre-winter, winter, post-winter and construction season.

  • Protected from the elements by the elements. LOL

  • @BigTex541 You sir win. Please take anything as your prize.

  • @BigTex541 Aww no fun. I was going to post the same joke myself :(

  • Umbrelements?

  • who puts ice in orange juice?

  • Pretty cool how I can watch the Professor all the way in Kentucky!

  • Doesn't osmosis play a role? The hypotonic ice melts into the salt.

  • Doesn't osmosis play a role, too? The hipotonic frozen ice 'melts' into the salt until isotonic.

  • You know you are a good teacher when you can teach everything you need to teach and make it fun! using dog toys.

  • ill give you my friend's leg for that umbrella

  • Nice umbrealla :O !

    I need one !

  • Ah the British. Without them, America would not exist. Nor Shakespeare. But everytime I see this, I think of Robin Hood: Men in Tights

  • Professor, where are you originally from?

  • @Vitegro Awesome town.

  • You arE way tooo awesome

  • Salt or calcium chloride spurred the formation of rust in the underside my previous car. My brake line gave way and began to leak brake fluid. I quickly discovered the problem and got it fixed immediately. You folks driving in snow country beware.

  • @FlashFizz The salt itself is corrosive

  • @FlashFizz Just start driving? Just buy your first car? Just realized that salt is corrosive and causes metal objects to rust? Most people in areas where it snows and that use salt on the roads are well aware of these facts. Washing your car (especially the underbody) during winter helps a great deal to prevent this.

  • 10 out of 10 for fashion today, the umbrella is magnificent

  • Watching this reminds me that the winter coming here is supposed to be another snowy one. I. WANT. SNOW. And you can have the rest of it. :D. What was in this video was nothing compared to last year. We got close to a meter of the stuff in 2 days.

  • oh how cool!!! i WANT that umbrella!!

  • An umbrella for the snow? XD

  • I like that one too

  • this professor is immediately one of the most interesting and intelligent people i have ever seen, and i should like to meet him very much. why?

well, i see him that way because he can go on about how snow forms in clouds and in depth on how chloride ions melt snow.

and i should lke to meet him so i can squeeze that snowflake.

  • U R MY HERO!

  • where did you get that umbrella? I totally want one too :)

  • How do you reconize a chemist? He has a periodic umbrella.

  • Wow. Heat up snow with a flamethrower? I like you, Professor. XD

  • My God, it is impossible not to simply adore this man!

  • Here in Canada, we use CaCl2 instead of NaCl. At least that is what my bag of road salt claims.

  • Your videos are always awesome. =)

  • I think professor poliakoff must have the largest collection of periodic table memerobilia ever.

  • i wonder if he's got underwear with the periodic table :o

  • @kidarrowz lol. I want his umbrella or mug. =D

  • i got my umbrela , ela ela .. e e ...

  • I like this one. It squeaks.

    best quote ever...

  • squeaky snowflake-want one!!

  • nice guy :) thanks

  • that adorable snow flake makes that 'ahh-ah~' sound ! That book of snow flakes is awesome and he has a umbrella of periodic table ? that's just cool.

  • Two things I would like to mention about this I have read many things on that at the core of every snowflake is a tiny spec of dust, however this was not mentioned. Also I would like to for the general edification of all inform people that hail and black ice freeze after the rain begins so as to clear up that question.

  • HA! Periodic table umbrella. I should have known. What a legend!

  • What a lovely man.

  • haha

    the professor is shivering

  • where can i get such an umbrella :D

  • 600th rating

  • @samn100 who cares, on the video: Martin is a genius and a great man

  • For the fun of it.

  • He was so proud of that umbrella, bless him :)

  • lol I love it

  • With an umbrella that cool, he has every right to be proud!

  • If i'm not mistaken, NaCl has an exothermic dissolution and "ups" the Fusion Point of H2O.

  • 3:15 hahaahahha he's the boss

  • i want his afro!!

  • i don't know nothing about chemistry but i love it i wish i was a profesor

  • he doesn't need a hat, the afro keeps him warm! :D

  • Ok...I don't quite understand how vapor in the atmosphere changes to a solid in the shape of a hexagon whereas in a freezer the liquid does not. Is the same chemical process taking place but in the atmosphere the process is done so quickly because of the minute amounts of water needed to be frozen compared to, say a liter of water in the fridge? Also, any clue why a hexagon? Why not an octagon?

  • @sinnersavedbygrace7 diffusion limited aggregation..... er... individual molecules of water vapour freeze one by one, each one then only connecting to another and so on. Why a hexagon? I can't remember exactly but I think that it has to be the most stable state for them to form in the atmosphere...(plz correct me if I'm wrong...)

  • im goint to throw

    and listen : missed

    hahahahahha

  • A Solution. so funny I love this guy.

  • Yay, the professor for president :))). He's great.

  • I thought road salt was calcium chloride.

  • Why was he out having a picnic in winter during a snowfall? Cause he's awesome.

  • This one I like... it squeaks.

  • @wheetcracker I laughed so hard at that XD

  • he just throws a soball at a random guy

  • the snow this year was really good, i could see loads of snow crystals, it was really beautiful.

    Nice umbrella btw...

  • The professor is barmy lol, I love it! He's AWESOME!!!!!!! I could listen to him all day without getting bored :D

  • mee :P

  • "I like this snow flake, it squeeks"

    XD haaha

btw, I want an umbrella like that!!

  • he's such a quirky professor. And the thing with the squeaky toy and umbrella. That made me laugh.

  • When he squeaked the toy, my dog who was sleeping beside me jumped up and looked around for his toy.

  • Great video, and good use of humor to entertain. :)

    Thank you.

  • man this guy's probably an awesome teacher

  • this one i like... it squeaks...

    ROFLLOLROFLSAUCE!!!

    LMAONAISE

  • 3:14 wtf?????????????

  • It made me lol

  • THIS GUY IS SO WHACK

  • Your talking about a brilliant professor.

  • 2.39 LOL!!

  • I love watching these videos in bed with my laptop. There's something oddly relaxing about them, and i love the little bit of humour the Professor throws in with the science. Great fun.

  • "This one I like; it squeaks." -Priceless and hilarious!

  • EPIC when i heared him say that i laughed my ass off!!!!

  • lol...when did he say that ??

  • 3:14

    want study there :D

  • those are flyyy ass mittens lol

  • thankyou professor!

  • omg does he have anything without periodic table on it? :) (5:27)

  • I thought that too...

  • 3:09 Haha this guy is awesome.

  • "I don't have a hat"

he doesn't need a hat lol

  • i kid you not, i wish i was able to go to the UK just so i could sit in on one of the professor's lectures

  • I want some periodic merchandise :D

  • he has the a pattern of the pariodic table on all his clothes & accesories hah :D

  • "This one I like, it sqeeks!" lol, this guy is very funny and very cool. Thank you very much professor!

  • Man, this Guy is as cool as ice, in his very own way !

  • he's an adult ad a child at the same time, it's brilliant

  • I agreee. Too few People keep an open mind an thir ability to have fun, when getting older.

  • This one i like it squeaks ;P

  • lol. He's awesome.

  • where did he get the periodic umbrella?

  • squeak? wow, wtf kind of snow falls in England?

  • Comment removed

  • so the slow (cold) water molecules join togheter one and one in the atmosphere to form all kind of crystals, wich form depends on the orientation of the first crystal's molecules. I did'n know that

  • Truly brilliant. Thank you

  • 3:07

  • i love this man. he is very noligable.

  • i heard the biggest snowflake that fell was 30cm in diameter

don't know if its true though

  • Wow, squeaky snowflake!

  • you should have seen my dog and my cat THEY JUMPED teehee

  • wow!!

    fantastic

love the "this one i like, it squeaks!" ha haa!!

  • these are awesome

  • He's so proud of his umbrella :-)

  • 3:15 = hahah!

    SQUEEEEK

  • hahahah "i like this one, it squeeks!" hahaha awesome video. Go nottingham! :D

  • hees cool but A little LOl i knew a lot of athat already and it's not that hard to see the tructure when the snow falls down you just have to remeber it XD Oh and U don't really Need a hat Or umbrelle when it snows Xd Escecially not with that Funky Afro ^_^ AWESOME

  • lol ur epic

  • This man is a hero.

    Love these videos! :D

  • I am studying As Level Chem, Bio and Physics at the moment (with Maths and Further Maths) and i have started taking a really big interest in these videos. When he was talking about the structure of ice i thought he was gonna say ice expands because of the all the spaces but he never =(

  • Well done. The UK needs more scientists. Good luck...

  • I wished, science is majorly hard. Whilst i enjoy it so much, i think i'm going to turn my abilty to the game industry, i want to create the first engine that runs on the rules of science rather than pre-programmed rules ;) So ambitious... lol

  • well good luck to you if you can do it every company will be after you for it

  • I had the same idea once, but there are too many calculations. As processors get faster though, there is becoming more room for realistic science in computer games. Just be aware of the dificulty of making real-time programs. The pre-programed rules you mention usually start out as scientific rules that are just simplified to run faster and only applied to some objects. Still, it sounds like a good job to design game engines.

  • my comment was to Alfrayer

  • wow I want that umbrella. :O

  • i want that too... oh boy if only he teaches in my uni!

  • the professor seem to be shaking in the weather. awh.

I LOVE all these videos! I`m actually learning something from youtube. =D I should be studying for bio but I`m watching chem videos. haha.

  • Looked like neo was late for class at the end of the video, anyway cool video as always...Interesting stuff

  • Love it! thank you so much for posting these! :)

  • He's voice is perfect for a teacher it makes you listen.

  • Yeah, I agree.

  • You guys are just great !! Thanks a lot for all the amazing videos..

  • A wonderful book on the science of snowflakes is Kenneth Libbrecht's "Field Guide to Snowflakes". (Lots of nice photos of snowflakes as well.)

  • I like this one...It Squeaks! =) LOL

  • ditto:)

  • yeah...that part was really funny;))

  • Nice video as always... Btw hello from Russia to all of you, guys! :)

  • From Russia With Love lol where do you live in russia. is it cold their all the time.

    what curancy do you use

  • you can also create a sort of snow when you scrape Ice. take a block of ice or a patch of ice outside. scrape it with a metal object (shovel) or other and you will get snow if you do it gently enough, so not to just simply make shards and grains of ice.

  • "This one I like. It squeeks"! Lol

  • i loled at that aswell :)

  • lol at the unbrella!

  • Mittens :D

  • My cat was sitting on my lap actually watching this until he squeaked the snowflake. Something about a squeaky snowflake freaked her out and she ran for cover in the other room. That was entertaining. Interesting topic too! Love PTV

  • Love snow...wow...

  • that umbrella is AWESOME.

I'm going to have to get myself one.

  • I've never heard of using NaCl as road salt; It must be awfully expensive.

Question: How does a molecule affixing to one side of the snowflake know what the other side looks like so as to be symmetrical? I have long wondered this, as here in Canada we can nearly always see the hexagonal shape of our dry, large snow flakes

  • I think you mean CaCl2 ;)

  • No, I mean NaCl. We always use CaCl2 on ice, and I've never hear of anyone using NaCl unless they ran out of the other.

  • That's quite odd.

I live in Vancouver and I had never heard of CaCl2 being used as ice melt until I saw this video.

And no, NaCl ice melt is not that expensive. I believe we just purchased a 10kg bag for around $8.

Although that may be relatively expensive when compared to CaCl2... I'm really not sure.

  • Nopes... NaCl is table salt and much more cheap... That's why NaCl is used...

  • I believe it's a matter of how they stack up, in a 3-D sense. The regular accumulation of what are, let's face it, perfectly identical building blocks, leads to the same pattern being evident from every angle. I'd say it was similar to how, if you try to arrange spheres or discs around a central sphere or disc, you can fit about 6 around. The circle on the left side doesn't "know" that the circle on the right side is there, that's just how they all fit together. But that's just a stab at it!

  • The snowflakes are sentient.

    THEY WILL PREVAAAAAIL

  • We do know how this happens. You will find explanations in biology books.
