  • is the 2004 version Tom Hanks?

  • i think it's just that americans shouldn't exactly try and imitate classic british humor. it won't work.

  • @staxstix You should be a bit more careful with generalisation or do you know where the director Alexander Mackendrick came from?

  • @lapislazuli7 i did know mackendrick was american, but what i didn't know was that the scriptwriter was actually also american. in either case, my comment has an incredible ignorant and dull tone to it, i have to agree. nonetheless, the movie still feels very british with the setting and all the actors being british; while in the coen-remake, the subtlety and understatement of the humor simply gets lost in such an american environment. except for hanks, no one really fit in.

  • @staxstix Thank you, I did not know about the writer! Very interesting. :-) I do agree with you in a way. I like the Coens but so far I have refused to watch their remake. I have no clue why they did it, it does not seem to fit in their filmography aswell. I cannot tell if it really always have to go wrong but I guess in most cases you cannot translate British humour to American. You can mix it or use it as an inspiration...

  • he is off his rocker, no?

  • The Alec Guinness version is the best. Tom Hanks doesn't do it justice.

I think the difference lies in the subtlety in Guinness' performance. I mean, if we did not know anything about Guiness before, there would be no way to suspect his real intent. But if you take one look at Hanks, dressed up like Colonel Sanders and talking like he's reading William Faulkner or Tennessee Williams, he's going to catch your eye.

  • @Dragonstorm787 He is so handsome - Professor Marcus I mean.

  • @Dragonstorm787

i agree, but you have to admit that the ability to use the force gave an unfair advantage to the character's subtle ways and actions

  • @justwatching1980 Hanks was awesome

  • great movie!
