Yeah I probably never even really heard of REM when I started college in '86 but I can still remember hearing that lyric for the first time (we were probably getting stoned in the dorms); "the power lines have floaters so the airplanes wont get snagged." and I really started to let my mind wander... when I woke up it was 1998 and I was married and paying a mortgage, wtf happened?
Like others here, this was the song that made me first notice a band called REM. I personally think the earlier years of REM made the best music. Sad to see music like this slowly fading.
The very first song I heard by R.E.M. The next day I walked to my small town's only music store and bought Fables of the Reconstruction on cassette. Initially about 90% of the album was over my unsophisticated head but it initiated a years-long love affair with this band.
This is the song that got me into REM, I first heard it around the time when it was released. I was young then, but it stuck with me and I still listen to REM 25 years later :)
Hey, GreekGuy, that was filmed in my home town area...it's beautiful there..it's in the Alleghany Mountains..Clifton Forge, VA. Breathtaking. The town's ecomony relied hugely on the train business (CSX and C & O). So to me, it's a beautiful video because I can relate to all of those trains and tracks.
Shame they're calling it a day, this was the first album I heard by them, and it still has a special place in my heart, I agree with unbridledid great atmosphere!!!
YEP, and mine was at 122 E. Cloverhurst Ave, right in the middle of Athens. If I had a way-back machine, I'd head straight there, instead of ancient Egypt - Athens is much cooler anyway!
@thuriferthecenser So true. Especially in Athens, Georgia where I was a student from 1983 to 1987. They were ubiquitous. REM forever.....................
I think Fables is their best album. It figures that the band thinks it is their worst.... I love the atmosphere that the album has, nothing that have done after comes close.... Old man Kensey is superb !
@unbridledid Fables is a great record. It has such a dark quality...kind of melancholy....a record of where they were at the time......Fables is underrated in my view.
@jsav1972 I agree, "Fables..." was/is awesome, and, to me, really established REM as one of the truly original American bands of the '80s, if not the very best, and "Life's Rich Pageant" cemented this status.

Chessie System, one of my all time favorite Railroads, you can never go wrong by using the Yellow-Red-Vermillion of the Chess-C!

I wish I would've been a college kid in the 80's. All the best music was coming from the college rock scene.

The 80s, the Greek system and REM made for such a period. Was a magical time to be a young person.

I like the fact that Bill very clearly has a mullet in this vid, and yet I still think he's very cool.

Walk around virtually any college campus in the fall of '85 and you could hear 'Fables" coming from a hundred windows

@jpcmd You had Herschel Walker, R.E.M., and Dominique Wilkins at UGA all at the same time in the early 1980's. A good time to be at UGA.
