Stan and Ollie are the best. Van Dyke and Calvin are second best. This is such a fascinating and hilarious tribute to the Boys; they really studied their pantomime and vocal characteristics so well. I'm reading Dick Van Dyke's autobiography, and it seems Stan was probably his number one hero. Imitation is the highest form of praise.
Wow! Just wow. Its amazing that I (at 31 years old) can sit down and watch this with my 7 year old daughter and we both can laugh at the antics. There is no genuine comedy like Laurel & Hardy (or this skit anymore). We've watch over 100 Laurel & Hardy clasics and it never get old... always good for a laugh. We even named our dog Laughing Gravy after a dog Stan owned in one episode!
Just watch the moment when Dick "sits" at the table....his mastery of pantomime/body movement is superb....you can almost see the 'chair'....and Henry Calvin manages to capture some of Babe's vocal inflections too...a great clip..
@jazzy6307 The Cigarette Girl ("Alice") was played by Joan Shawlee (1926-87), who was also playing the part of "Pickles Sorrell" in that same episode.
You can't see it in this clip, unfortunately, but the real Stan Laurel was in the audience and witnessed the shooting of this clip. He later was quoted as saying, "If 'they' ever film the story of my life (and I hope they don't), I'd want 'Dicky' to play me."
after he did this episode, he went over to his friend Stan Laurel's house and he gave Dick some notes and thought he did a spot on impersonation. He noticed the brim of the hat was curled instead of straight and said to Dick, "You should've asked me if you could borrow my hat. I would've let you use it." Read that in Dick Van Dykes new memoir it's a great book
I remember seeing this for the very first time on TV, before it became a rerun, back in the early 60's and I was in kindergarten. BTW, Stan not only critiqued Dick Van Dyke's performance but also tutored him on the characterization before he had done this on camera. He was very pleased and happy with the integrity of the whole skit!

@Narutoftw4 That's actually logical, since Stan Laurel was actually not only a direct influence on Dick Van Dyke and a friend but also his mentor. Dick Van Dyke also gave the eulogy at Stan Laurel's funeral in 1965. So this routine is really a fitting tribute by a student to a great teacher.
Not bad, but very few of the gags are original - they are just copied from Laurel and Hardy films. The last line is wrong. It should be "Here's another NICE mess you've gotten me into"
This skit is from "The Dick Van Dyke TV Show"episode"The Sam Pomerantz Scandels". Mr.Van Dyke Told Stan Laurel that he was performing this skit and Stan watched. In the final credits..Mr.Larry Harmon is listed as the show's technical consultant.Which is pure B-! Since he knew nothing about L&H's comedy.
@StabbingKnifes - Agreed - I remember seeing this when it first came on in the 60s, and I had just become a L&H fan (their films were shown all over television back then). Great to see it again!
@bogossemre I agree. I saw him on Broadway in Kismet in 1954 as the Wazir. He was awesome. He had such a big beautiful voice. He sang "Was I Wazir?" and part of the quartet that sang "And This is My Beloved". Sooo beautiful. Too bad there isn't more of him singing.
