That was sweet - I was an opera singer, and that was one of the cutest versions of that I've ever seen - sure Michael isn't perfect, but I'd much rather have seen that then some of teh dreadful papagenos I've seen!
Someone like Bryn Terfel and Lesley are bound to have the edge they have trained afterall. Michael is not trained and doesn't claim to be an opera singer in any way shape or form. This was a bit of fun for Lesleys tv show. I don't think Michael lets himself down at all here and give him a musical theatre song and he is in his ellement.
I just don't think Michael Ball is up for it... most classically trained male singers would cover the girl's voice rather than the other way around... but well, this IS the other way around... I think Michael Ball can top musical singing better than classical singing...
i totally, totally agree. You said it so well.I'm at "opera school" as we jokingly call it, and i've grown up listening to him at Les Mis, musical theatre stuff, and he is AMAZING. He as great presence on stage and commands the area he is in. He doesn't quite match up at the classical i don't think... maybe because he sings so "forward"? But he has a lovely rich voice for musical roles. Someone like Bryn Terfel etc definitly have the edge on this stuff though!
In my opinion I think it;s very cute AND different. I can see alot of you on here are afraid of something being approached in a different way. Hint why alot of serious opera fanatics HATE Sarah Brightman. But I love it and find it very entertaining.
Hmmmm...I like Michael Ball. Don't get me wrong...his acting is stellar, here and elsewhere. However, if I ever hear the man sing Mozart again I WILL throw myself off of something tall...ha ha...
I don't think Michael Ball is attractive in the slightest. He always looks a little bit overweight. He looks like an over grown toddler. Do you see what I mean?
Well, to each her own, I suppose. I think he's adorable. Not handsome in the accepted sense of the term, but he has that whole boysih cuteness thing going on. And he has lovely eyes.
well - not always - but... the times he's a bit on the chubby side is when he has quit smoking - so I say bring on the chubby-ness if it means better health (and a longer great voice) for him...
But early vids especially - like Love Changes Everything...*swoon*
then again perhaps its just the voice that does it for me...
(PS for those commenting on Lesley being better than him - for this kind of thing sure - but for his normal stuff - no way... she bombed the Phantom of the Opera on his album)
I have to agree with basilyorian that Mozart intended Papageno to be comical and Michael gsve an excellent performance and it is not the first time he and Lesley Garrett have clowned around together, Lighten up folks and enjoy!
Jesus...can any of you sing like him? Probably not. The translation is surprisingly good and Michael Ball sings clearly and well. Stop looking for perfection.
I agree with you on everything except the part about it being his show. He was actually a guest on her show, but I still don't see what the problem is. They chose to sing opera and humour it up a bit, and, like you said, if someone doesn't like it they should just stop watching it and stop ruining it for us by complaining about it.
I think everyones being a little 2 pernickety. It was a TV show. Theyre both naturaly funny & if I remember right it was HIS show so he could sing wot he damn well pleased...& as Lesley IS an opera singer, thats wot he chose 4 her. I remember finding it very entertaining. If u're looking to watch proper opera & this isnt to ur taste, then stop wasting ur time here being critical about somethin that wasnt intended 2 be 'serious opera' & go cheer the hell up & find something you do want 2 watch.
It's not sung like Lloyd Webber, but you can hardly expect Michael to do as professional a job as someone trianed in that specific music. And even so he does a good job.
I think Lesley does quite a good job, she is such a character... but this is Mozart... Michael isn't a Mozart singer so he shouldn't be singing Mozart, he is exceptional in music theatre... one of the best I have seen actually but not in opera. The 'production' is cute and quite entertaining but as a purist I like to Mozart sung stylistically and not in the manner of a west end musical.
Ummmm, before you go getting all vocal and style conscious on us about who and who-is-not a "Mozart singer"...Don't forget. Mozart wrote the part of Papageno for an actor, not a singer. Emmanuel Schikaneder, the librettist for the opera, was an actor, and he played the part. That's why it is the most intricate and fun, but least challenging vocally. Michael Ball most certainly is a singer. Let the guy sing it. It's fun. It's meant to be. This isn't Mozart's Requiem for goodness' sake!!!
it's awful in english, much better in german!!

I personally think this is a scream. Kudos to both of them for this amusing performance.
Am extremely jealous of Lesley Garrett, of course, for getting to kiss Michael Ball. But that's life. *sigh*

I like it, translation and singing and all. Music is to be enjoyed! That was Mozart's objective -- to bring good music to the people.
