There proteins are then assembled inside the cell, and once there are sufficient numbers of the virus, the cell bursts, destroying the cell and releasing more of the virus.

The CDC have gone on record in the past stating (and anyone who knows so much about viruses as you apparently do) should know that the suspected cases are always massively less then the actual cases in a case like this.
And the numbers don't really matter, only what the media do with them. a SINGLE case in the UK right now, and its all over TV and newspapers.
