Really no. Pirates never take prisoners. if pirates lose a battle they are not prisones, they are hanged, along with the rest of the crew. But you were right though, back then muchly in the mediterraniean, there were tons of random pirate attacks, espcesily viking ships.

Watch your graphic settings. There you can activate "particels" or sth like that and some details. When you don't have them activated the ships just disappear.
