Yeah you cant do this trick even if you know how to do a faro if you dont know how the rest of the trick works.

Your variation seems to be closer to the original dawn patrol. Yeah the faro shuffle is one of my favourite sleights.

Nice variation. I have a variation of Dawn Patrol too. BTW I also love the faro shuffle; there is just so many things you can do with it :-D
