This is to anya933: It's obvious that 'The Queen' is a tramp, "bar-fly", worn-out whore [your choice] and the man who..."brought her to this world" is either a 'pimp' or a 'bar-fly' himself. Pity. Cool song though.
I think the message behind the words is that several of the men who were at the bar quite fancied the woman, and had spotted that she was tipsy, so therefore, would be an easy lay. However, one man, a decent man saw the woman as a human being, a person, someone's daughter, sister, mother maybe. He got to know the person hiding behind the false front, courted her in the old-fashioned way, they married and lived a good life. Just sayin'.
@SwiftStormyNight She's not a prostitute, she's a bar-fly you know those woman who aren't married and stay till closing time and go with some guy or not. A prostitute could afford better clothes and men would n't fight over a prostitute cause they'd know they could have her for the right cash. No the song is about a disillusioned bar-fly ..and the poor woman is probably real.
@Piggysmaatgmail ...I always seen this as a lonely Vietnam widow fighting thru alcohol & what ever companionship she could find to make the pain go away . During those days there was a lot of pain .
I haven't heard this song since I was less than 10 years old,(25+ years) always loved it but now that I understand the lyrics it's a different meaning from what I pictured back then. ....Peace, Love, and Empathy to all.
If you are going to listen to this song - this pretty much is the one. Dennis' voice has just the right amount of whiskey, desperate emotion and gravel. Emmy Lou, a national treasure as she truly is, is just too sweet to sing this song.
Absolutely great song, the ONLY version worth listening to. Saw tem at Lowestoft in Suffolk, one of the best damn concets I have been to ever!!!!!!!!!!!!
i think i have most of there cd's and have stole my mothers records... ohh just love Dr Hook!!!! nothing really around these days that really compares.. in my opinion :)
@79Bek Been listening to Dr. Hook since 1972 (Grade 8, seen them 7 times 1981 to 2006 ) Have 5 Vynil albums, 2 cd's and even still have an 8 trac copy. Only concert band I've ever seen more than twice.
@Marvin5049 DITTO!!! Started listening in 1971 and saw them first in '75 in Shreveport - AMAZING! Glad to know there are so many people who still love them like I do!
I seen them in Naples Fl.now get this at a place called the Silver Dollar. They were so messed up they could not play for more than half an hour. But I wasnt too upset because I got to see DR.Hook I will allways remember that. They were and in my mind still are Great
My opinion, Dennis Locorrrier's unique voice and talent is second to none, and that includes Elvis and Sinatra. Please spend some time listening to him on YouTube, and you will see what I am saying. I'm not talking about charisma or his stage presence or name recognition. But his beautiful voice and delivery. Dennis never misses a word or a note. Perfection.

Best version of this by anyone.Have loved Dr Hook since the early 70s. Wish you would repost Cookie and Lila. The best Dr Hook song of bunch of great music
