Great to read all the glowing testimonials. I just want to add my name to the list and say that Robin's books are the best and easiest way yo get into playing this music. One could argue that he's done more to spread it around than anybody else. BRAVO ROBIN! And yes, your little girl is adorable.
Robin's little black jam book established the basic repertoire and accomplished something really neat in the process... The fact that everyone who plays this music has learned these tunes means that no matter where you go, you can sit down and jam with local musicians - any country - any town - period. Sure, people might know hundreds of these songs, but at least 50 or more of them are in the black book. That means you have two gigs worth of songs in common with everyone who plays this music.
I started Gypsy jazz in 2002 in Samois, with some pages from your books, and after you sent me the first book on that autumn and nowadays I have a 4,5 years old band, I had 160 gigs in 2008 and from this may I quit my daily job and started to live as a musician! :)
"...that's how I taught my brother Kevin, and he was kind of the inspiration for writing these books--cause he couldn't play guitar AT ALL!...and we had gigs coming up!"
Robin Nolan's Book are the BEST instruction books I have ever encountered.
He has made the seemingly impossible totally
doable. His Chord voicings and shapes give a really authentic sound, and his chord shapes
are repeated throughout his series, so there is remarkably little to learn to gain an authentic sound. With Play along CD's it gives you a sounding board to chart progress. Bottom line, I exceeded My every expectation.
I started learning gypsy jazz guitar last year, after playing different guitar styles for 30 years. Initially, I was intimidated by very theoretical books that seemed to get in the way of my playing GJ. I was able to buy a nice used GJ guitar recently and it came with a bunch of books, including three of Robin's. When I opened them up, popped in the CD and listened to the first track, I found myself playing GJ right away and having a lot of fun doing it! Thank you Robin!
latcho drom, milko, my blue heaven, harlem nocturne, espirit, clouds, le mar, tiger rag, flinstones theme, it had to be you, plus countless other tunes that i would love to learn from your format!
i bought all of your books when you released the gig book, i never knew how to play gypsy jazz but i was very interested. your books taught my how to play it when i had no one to jam with. i learned from them and in turn started teaching other people interested.
from your books, i have developed a strong passion for gypsy jazz and music in general that will never go away!
Thanks to your books I could join a band exactly 1 year after starting from nowhere. Thanks Robin, my life has changed. Erik (black Shelley Park guitar)
Yes Yes Yes. Thank You for your books. They are giving me so much joy to play and practice. The knowledege with other jazz studies lent me a teaching job. I even named one of my baby son Nolan.I just dont know how to thank you enough. Zsolt from America
Today's Gypsy jazz scene is a complex tapestry. Robin's books were among the first threads of this community of players. When I attended the first Djangofest NW '01, there were about a 100 of us-each thirsting for Gypsy jazz knowledge. We each had our first Nolan books too. Even though hundreds of miles separated us, those books bound us together with a common learning platform. Go to Djangofest today, you'll see those dog-eared book. They are that important. They connect us and inspire us.

I started with this series of books after going to L'Esprit Manouche festival in 2003. The books took me right from a complete novice on gypsy jazz to now where I feel comfortable sitting in on sessions.
I have tried other method books but always came back to Robins no nonsense authentic approach.
This bloke just wants to make money from the Django legacy. There is so much free info now it just takes dedication and practice.
