IggyInBurnaby hit the nail on the head here incarcerating kids only makes them more bitter toward the system. It does absolutley nothing to rehabilitate them away from criminal activity, same thing with adults really. If anything they come out having learned how to be a better/smarter criminal, so to speak.

The best solution I EVER heard to dealing with crime... is removing the monetary market system. In fact most crime, poverty and war are a direct result of money and markets. If we deal with the fundamentals... this horse shit will go away. Barring that, as I know it is too radical for the fear dominated masses, criminals need to be put into loving supportive communities to learn to work together and be loved and vice versa. Murderers should be sent to live with the Amish, they'll fix 'em.

we need to bring back timothy leary's approach: take mushrooms with prisoners. he did a study while at harvard that showed tripping gave positive and informed impressions and those prisoners he tested on had far lower recidivism rates. you can guess what happened to this research project.

Robbery is a violent crime.I used to own a convienance store and if someone would have came in and robbed me I would have blown their head off with no problem. The problem in the black community is the men don't take care of their families. 70% of the households are headed by a woman.If the men don't take care of their families then they don't take care commuities either.

Of course anyone with half a brain knows that locking kids up and letting them be mistreated will make them worse, and that they will eventually get out and cause more harm now that they have more to (justifiably) resent. We can only assume that those in power want that to happen.

It is in the intrests of private prison to lock up youth for longer the system is not about rebiltaion its about messing with your mind putting you in a box and getting you on to the converyer belt system

@lppoqql you obviously didn't get the point. Answer WHY do these kids resort to crime? That is what this report is trying to address. As well, it is trying to ask / answer whether it is better to help kids, or punish them. Punishment generally makes them worse than they were to begin with. Treat a kid like a criminal and you will ensure that he remains one! Treat him like a valuable human being and he might just become one. Get it?

@herpiethelovebug there are many reasons why 'crime' takes place, and it is a very complex issue. We could start with who writes laws that make things criminal. We can also look at inequality in our social system, economic factors etc.. One conclusion that I have personally come to is that criminal behavour can be viewed primarily as an environmental problem, so fixing the envionment should be the primary concern. Of course, when I say environment, I mean societal environment.

@IggyInBurnaby You don't have to explain this to me, I do a lot of reading on this very topic. I got interested in it while I was investigating the Venus Project. Environment is what shapes everything on the planet. You are as you are, because of your environment. Your decisions and thoughts are all reaction to environment. You are a robot, essentially, programed by your environment. Most people can't accept that or don't understand it, and so the world turns.

And, safety is first, after which, there may be some punishment or reform; and for that safety, bad people must first be sequestered or removed.

And, throughout history, most invading armies killed the criminals—any idea of why?

The parents and the community are often to blame when young ones go wrong. I've done a lot of work, often unpaid, in the US and Europe in rehabilitation, since the '70s, starting even before I was adult. There's often been a lot of neglect involved and also basic lack of sane, basic healthcare. I don't mean pills, I mean nutrition and a healthy, restful structured environment and then planning and support have to happen. It is a slow process but need not be very costly. Uprated.

While black people may go to jail more often than whites, this does not mean that they commit the most crime. "White collar" crime against the "blue collar" and poor can be attributed to the imperialist, royalist societies from the USA and the European continent, and they have caused economic stagnation and civil wars in many non-white/non-European societies.
