  • @finalfantasyfan80 when mother sees Chiyo's eyes she says "too much water."

  • Uhm.....this wasn't by Steven Speilberg....it's Rob Marshall....just sayin.

  • I can never seem to find the English version! It isn't fair! *pout*

  • jeez, i completely forgot sayuri had sister...

  • when Chiyo shows mother her eyes, what does mother say? I can't really hear it too well

  • YES FIRST PART DONE ONLY 13 TO GO

  • YES 1st PART DONE ON

  • this isn't English!

  • @xXxNeverBeTheSamexXx it is English, the director let this particular scene in Japanese on purpose, keep watching and their conversation will be full on English :)

  • I love this book and the movie also, but when Auntie is telling MOther Chiyo-san's age she says year of the Rooster. In the book it's year of the Monkey. :/

  • This is my first time seeing this movie...I know it's a shocker. Ziyi Zhang is in this so I'm happy to see this...I know I won't be disappointed :D

  • its book is awesomest

  • Geisha sell their art, not their bodies

  • in the book Auntie says "she's the year of the monkey "...

  • love this book currently reading it for the 2nd time!!!!! <3

  • @AshAnd01 awesome book, i've read it at least 20 times never get tired of it.

  • @AshAnd01 Me too! I fell in love with it about six months ago and honestly loved the style and the imagery! I'm excited to watch the movie. ^^

  • i love dis movie very creative an poetic

  • ohh nvm

  • o.O why would you say its english if its all jap???

  • @junjouBLlover @ChileHT The movie is meant to be like that, there is no eng in the first few mins, nothing important happened that we couldnt figure out:) The father sold his daughters bc the mother was ill, they needed money:'(

  • Grrr is anyone else wanting subtitles??

  • Comment removed

  • I cried.... because of the mum was ill TT^TT and they had to sell the kids~ atleast they'll have a better life that way too

  • wqhy did he sell them? :O...

  • @pinkmercy123456789 he needed the money cuss the girls mom was sick

  • I love how the director followed the book nearly line for line. Didn't ruin the integrity of it at all.

  • @kfgsaprez he left out a few things (like Chiyo believing she was going to be adopted). But they can only do so much and made a wonderful piece of cinematic art :)

  • I love this movie! I am going to read the book today (;

  • you know what i did not even know there was a book lol but i love this movie

  • dude, they skipped out sooooo much stuff and they got some of it wrong! and hello, it's meant to be a horse pulling the car =.= and the old lady who was with mr.bekku, and tanaka-san is supposed to be wearing a kimono. and sugi is supposed to be in the carriage too

  • dude, they skipped out sooooo much stuff and they got some of it wrong!

  • The movie made it seem like the father evily sold them away. But its not like that. If you read the book its different.

  • year of the rooster ?! nooo she was a monkey !

  • YESSS. I just finished this book ( and i love sayuri to death ) and now i'm just starting the moive. AWWYEEEAH. <3

  • So beautiful, but it makes me a little sad that its inaccurate from the book...

  • luv dha movie!!

  • if only it was subbed :'(

  • Just finished the book like, an hour ago. Glad this movie is on youtube.

  • Check out My Memoirs dude! Don't be Scared! There's Extremely Interesting! Guaranteed You will Love it! Don't Be Scared!

  • at 2:19 she is kind of look's like jiyeon from t-ara O.O

  • @hyuna1fan kind of...

  • thx for uploading

  • @florah3 A Geisha is a Japanese entertainer.

  • what exactly is a geisha?

  • @florah3 Contrary to popular belief, a geisha is NOT a prostitute. A geisha would be an entertainer, a companion of sorts to men. She would have to be able to carry conversation, play instruments, sing, pour tea, know etiquette, tell jokes, etc.. They would begin training at a very young age, some as young as 9. Geisha could flirt with their guests, but they were at all times in control and they were not to sleep with them (although of course, I imagine some did).

  • @warmandsunnydays I feel like all women should be able to 'carry conversation, play instruments, sing, pour tea, know etiquette, tell jokes, etc.'

  • @zepandandzebamboo in front of men as many as 20? and only men? no friends? accompaning men to the toilet area? in a kimono and stark white makeup? wearing a heavy obi? getting paid?

  • @jmaybe2 ...you've got a point - many, actually haha

  • @warmandsunnydays ooh but before turning into a geisha the maiko (apprentice) has to give her virginity away but never see that man again for the rest of her life~

  • @warmandsunnydays Yes indeed, the belief that a geisha was the same as prostitued originates from the time right after WW2 when some prostitudes called themself Geisha. The belief spread to the west as the customers of these girls often was western occupation soldiers. Howewer they were not Geisha they were not taught in anny of the arts of a Geisha.

  • I like the book :) It's awesome! :D

  • I adored the book, the movie kinda makes geisha seem like cheap hookers though.

  • The book was quite enlightening.

  • The book was sad

  • why were they sent away?

  • sub?

  • how old is she?

  • I wonder why they decided to Change Chiyo's age?

  • @x0file0chicklet its what you have to do when becoming a geisha

  • It is a beautiful film and I love it. Only thing for me is.... they did not use Japanese actress for main character...This Chinese actress is very beautiful and talented, but her mannerism in Kimono seems unnatural for Japanese and not elegant. I wished they found a beautiful Japanese actress for this part...

  • @lehua16 she is japanese you knit >___>

  • i just read this book and loved it!

  • just read the book, very fascinating.

  • so this movie was by rob marshall... just sayin :D

  • I absolutely love Chiyo's eyes. Wish mine were that color.

  • In the book it says that 'gei' from geisha means art. So pretty much a geisha is an artist...what they do is a form of art.

  • @XxMizukigurlxX93 i loved the book... it was one of those books thats so sad you wanna stop reading, but you cant because its so captivating

  • Don't worry, it gies to English.

  • is this english??????i can't understand

  • I loved this book. It was Amazing. I usually read those teenage books since I am one but this was way different. It was nicely written. It was beautiful. If you agree thumbs up!

  • Started reading the book just recently (watched the movie first) and it added more story to the movie lol. I am happy to say that I'm loving the book so far and adore this movie.

Geisha's are so elegant and creative! At first I thought that they were prostitutes, but then I realized that they're completely different. :)

  • @outxherexconfused the same with me from the movie i tought they were expensive prostitutes but then after reading the book i understand so much more i had to come watch the movie again

  • After watching this movie and a documentary I realize that the idea of Geishas and prostitutes/courtesans being the same are ridiculous. Geishas are graceful and talented. Prostitutes/courtesans aren't either of those things at all. Except for the ones with a "heart of gold".

  • @SereneAndTranquil some are. you should watch the movie called "dangerous beauty" about the courtesan & poet veronica franco, it's really good.

  • i'm just checking my facts here, geishas are or are not prostitutes?

  • @MistressHavok

no they're not, but some prostitutes in japan dress up like geisha which is why people mix them up.

  • aish i hate how the book and movie is totaly different

in the book shes a monkey and here she is a roster

  • wait, so did the little girl have a good life even though she was sold?

  • i find the book great.....

    as well as the movie!!!

  • u gotta wonder wat ever hapened to satsu, in the book a letter says she ran off with a boy from the village but nothing after that

  • I loved the book and the movie

  • I think they way they are taken away in the book is better....it shows their innocence and ignorance better...

  • The book and film are 2 different stories however both equally good.

  • thgfhhghhdfhgfhfghdfghdfghdfhfhdfhd

  • The part with them being kidnapped with no subs is there for a reason, The directors don't want you to know what's going on until later, when she's actually speaking in English.

  • @MystiqueProphecy thanks ... i thought the whole thing was in japanese..or whatevr the lang is .

  • the first part with them being kidnapped isnt supposed to have subs.

  • @azngirlkari they weren't kidnapped they were sold by their father, because the mother and father were dying. that is how they became sold, to the two different houses.

  • I thought it's in english.

  • i cnt understand what r they saying...no sub.

  • thanks..i never know that there is a book of this..i must be very slow..

  • i thought they didnt start calling her pumpkin until Chiyo got there.

  • how am i supposed to understand wat they said at the beggening lah/1

  • she said she was born in the year of the rooster??!?! but isn't that the Chinese zodiac?

  • @uraharafkedme I believe Chinese and Japanese beliefs are somewhat alike

  • ok um how am i soposed to understand this?

  • Okay, I haven't seen the whole first part yet, but I just had to stop and comment. It doesn't even show her relationship with Mr. Tanaka and how she meets him and how he decides to ask her father to sell them. And then, her mother said she had too much water in her PERSONALITY, not that she was LIKE water, for Pete's sake!!!!! They changed this sooo much!!! I just finished the book and it's AMAZING, so I am OUTRAGED!!!!

  • damn! the characters in films are never like what you imagine from reading the books..

  • ughhh. the movie doesnt give any reason nor background on why they were taken and how it all started (this pisses me off). another reason why books are ALWAYS better then the movie. at least they dont show the audience that old woman who has no personal boundaries. and where is Granny? i liked her better than Mother

  • lyerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr this is not english

  • subtitles!!!

  • Hey u should put english subtitles down cause i dont understand mabey my friend but not me haha

  • were the hell is the english subtitles ??? argggggggg

  • at the BEGINING. later on the do talk in eng for us

  • the girl who plays little sauryi is soo good at acting:) kudos!

  • ohgo suzuka~ she's... i think 16 now, definitely check her out!

  • I like this film but the book is great:)

  • yh i agree the book was really good ^.^

  • ITS JAPANESE

  • omg! i've been wanting to see this

    thankz:)

  • hey SuperPrettyCOLORS person if you red the book you wwill know what they are saying in the begining

  • I just under stood some of what they said...

but I dont know thre language..

dokoe esuruyo (sp?) means where are we going

  • i have read the book .... but movie may be good as well... could any one give me link where i cn have english subtitles

  • what happened to the sound ? o_o

  • why you put the english sub if its not? huh! dumbass!

  • ?? what are you saying??

  • have you ever thought, that maybe it's supposed to be like that?

  • gong li is chinese

  • this is english? not in the beginning T-T

  • can anyone translate the conversation between those two men please and thank you

  • the man (tanaka) wants to adopt chiyo and satsu and consults their dad. the dad allows this because he knows he himseld cannot bring up the 2 of them in poverty and a dying mum.

  • i'm actually going to fall asleep to this movie. i love the story so much... such a perfect ending , for such a tragic beginning

  • cold hearted dad .

  • read the book before judging characters

  • i did. the whole thing.

  • @bashibazouks77 im halfway through the book and my gawsh, it is so breathtaking and hard to put down!

  • @bashibazouks77 exactly!

  • @bashibazouks77 right on!!

  • @bashibazouks77

I agree I am almost done reading the book that I found and I watched this like two yrs ago and it was VERY good

  • @bashibazouks77 why did he sell them?

  • @ashirockuno because they are very poor and he couldnt take care of them anymore bc he is also dying

  • @sexyking19 thnz for tellin me it brings it into focus alot alsso very sad

  • WHY IS A MOVIE ABOUT JAPAN PLAYED BY LOTS OF CHINESE : Ziyi Zhang, Michelle Yeoh and Gong Li ??? (Except for Watanabe Ken) ?

The I could do a movie about italian mafia staring only Russian actors then ?? HOW STUPID IS THAT ??

  • thank you.....i agree with you 100%

  • it must be a parody

  • LMAO

  • If it bothers you so bad don't watch it.

  • Michelle Yeoh is Malaysian...but ya they all act in Asian films of related countries..

  • Malaysian of Chinese origin.

  • it's so dark

  • this isn't at all wat the book suggests....for eg. in the book its told dat CHIYO gives the name PUMPKIN to her but here the ppl already call her dat.....and also...the mother was supposed to be very hideous...but she's just as fine as any other woman.....n chiyo did not shout for her sister infront of mother at all

i'm just readin the book for the 2nd time right now...so i remember perfectly

  • why is there no subtitles for the first part of the vid?

  • Why did they sell both of them?

  • ya why?

  • because their parents didn't have enough money to take care of them both, so the older one was sold to a whorehouse and the younger one to a geisha house, so she could have a more fortunate life and because she was pure, unlike her six years older sister who had done questionable things with a boy in the village that she liked, so it seem like she would be better off as a prostitute.

  • I think they had to, because they´re so poor.

  • no, becuz all those actresses are really really famous!

  • Uhm.. we were discussing, why the parents had to sell both of the kids in the plot xD.. you know? and not about the actresses...

  • the book is so much defined and has so much more details that wouldnt be appropriate for a movie

  • makes me cry

    i wanna live it lol

  • popcorn anyone???

  • this story is just sooo sad and sooo graet! i lOvE it

  • i love this story! but i must admit..th ebook is way way better...

  • agreed..was actually disappointed with some parts in the movie...but always refreshing to see a book come alive..

  • i love thiss movie so much

i have it on dvd ;D

  • Gya! I love this Movie!! Its soo sad! :(

  • what happens at the beginning?

  • the accents in this movie takes a while to get used to, but this movie is art!

  • its too dark but thanks for the vid upload

  • Chiyo is actually year of the rooster so she is 9 from what I gathered it works better when you have headphones

  • nvm im just stupid!

  • or does any1 no where i can find one i can understand better?

  • is there subs or something cuz i read the book and i rly want to watch this movie?

  • this s deff not as good as the book but still pretty good

  • its not in english...

  • The beginning isn't

  • i love the book but i haven't seen the whole movie yet...

but i'm a bit confused. The old woman is Auntie and the one with the glasses Mother right?

& the little chiyo is the prettiest and cutest thing ever :D

  • so this girl (chiyo) is sold from her family with her sister (satsu) becuase her father can no longer take care of them. they come from a the country side of japan, yoroido. she is year of the monkey.

  • i love this film!

    xx

  • i dont get it do these ppl speak english or japanese

  • seriously? they are in japan

  • In the book she is the year of the monkey not roster.

  • can any one tell me if this is the story of mademoise butterfly????

  • that's a different story

  • Well if I'm correct I beleive its about a man who fell in love with another man disguised as a woman. Its a beautiful story.
